Same-sex couple wins newspaper contest for wedding

I don’t have a lot to say about this but found it rather sweet:

Same Sex Couple Wins Journal-Star’s Ultimate Wedding Contest

That’s the Lincoln Journal-Star.

Lincoln, Nebraska.

I used to live in Lincoln and while Nebraska is not properly Bible Belt country it does run conservative and religious, so it’s nice to see not only that this sort of thing happens there but that, for the most part, people aren’t too bothered by it.

I particularly like the part where the couple say they didn’t enter the contest for political reasons or to raise awareness - they just wanted the money for their wedding.

That’s kind of what equality looks like.

I was touched that they received only one negative comment on their entry, and it wasn’t because they’re gay.

And such a cute couple!

Little old ladies and retired old men write letters to the editor and the church group whispers about it in hushed tones at the coffee shop. For the rest of the population, no one gives a shit. Life goes on. Did you think they’d be lynched, or what?

/someone from a place a lot like Nebraska

That’s entirely my point. It’s not all that long ago this sort of thing would have been a big deal. Now it gets barely a passing notice. Which in itself, I think, is a big deal.

With folks like Michele Bachmann and Focus on the Family still trying to claw back rights for gay couples, it’s nice to see that the general populace no longer “give a shit”. That’s progress.
