Same-sex marriage: and Manitoba makes five!

<a href=“http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2004/09/16/manitobasamesex040916.html”>CBC</a>:

All I need is New Brunswick for all the places I’ve lived to have SSM now. w00t!   :stuck_out_tongue:

Sorry, fixed link.

BTW, looks like the next one might be in Nova Scotia.

Congrats Matt!!! I think it’s time to emigrate northwardly for me if this keeps up!

… or maybe Matt should move south …

Hey! I can’t post! No fair saying I can’t post more often than once every 60 seconds if you won’t let me post at all!

It’s like I’m stuck in a badly-written Star Trek episode! Somebody push the time-travel reset button so I can post.

Ah. That’s much better.

… umm, on preview, st. pauler’s post was already there, so my post makes a lot more sense… on several levels…

I think the SDMB has done the Time Warp. It’s just a jump to the left you know. Too bad we can’t forward the US to be a little closer to what’s going on in Canada.

Oh, now I’m posting before I originally posted. I’m my own father.

(WTF??)

stpauler: Kew. Canada can always use a few more cute gay guys.

Maybe even Topeka Kansas, home base of Fred Phelps, is making progress. Check out this article from today’s newspaper!

I attended the meeting, and I thought “No way, they won’t select her” But then I got a happy surprise, they did!

As the article also says, Muller was a driving force behind the sadly failed attempt to add orientation to the list of things protected by the city’s anti-discrimination code. And apparently she’s going to give it another go. If only those that voted for her will stand firm, it could be done. But my inner cynic is thinking that some will chicken out. You wouldn’t believe how organized the opponents of the change were.

Of course Phreddy already has two ugly fliers out, one calling for Muller’s resignation, and the other is an openly racist screed against the mayor, calling him, among other things, “little black Jimbo” Mind you, I don’t like the mayor myself, but it’s not based on his race.

Sorry for the hijack, I just wanted to crow about even a smidgen of progress in my hometown.

From the Globe and Mail:

Well, your post saying so keeps migrating southwardly!

I’ve said it before…

I don’t understand why every gay man and woman in America doesn’t just pack up and move north. Sure, the winters might be harder but at least y’all would be accepted better than the shameful way you’re treated in the US.

Congrats, Matt! Here’s hoping for a sweep!

So when are you figuring Alberta’s gonna fold?

Heh…

I get the impression that’s a very popular sentiment in America, unfortunately.

And yes, I totally get your point, Jonathan, and that’s not what you were saying, but I was just trying to be pithy.

Actually, after seeing Bowling for Columbine all the way through this past wednesday, I’m considering it. What sort of demand is there for (when I finish with this, anyway) a mathsci-concentration grade school teacher? I’m also rustily bilingual.

Any reason why your title says “And Manitoba makes five” when your link says it’s the fourth province, matt?

Because Manitoba is the fifth jurisdiction to have legal same sex marriage. The fourth was the Yukon (a territory, not a province).

Thank you. I was unaware that the Yukon had legalized same-sex marriage.
