San Diego: Best place for Dessert (LATE NIGHT)

On Sunday I’ll be taking my nieces to a concert at Humphrey’s (we’re gonna see The Monkees!).
I’ll want to take them out for dessert somewhere afterward. I figure it will have to be a place that’s either an all-nighter or at least open until midnight (I figure it’s possible we could squeeze in just before closing time at a place that closes at 11:00, but we’d be cutting it close and the staff would hate us for coming in just as they thought they were going to get to go home).

So? Dessert. San Diego. Open until at least midnight on a Sunday.
Thoughts?

P.S. It needn’t be immediately in the vicinity of Humphrey’s.
San Diego isn’t that huge a city and late night traffic will be easy so we can bound from one neighborhood to the next to the next to the next easily enough.

Blimey, I live here, and I can’t help ya. I don’t know the downtown area, or the nightlife. For me, a good date ends at Seaport Village at Ben & Jerry’s!

Maybe http://www.extraordinarydesserts.com/locations.htm before?
really yummy but I can’t think of any other late night dessert spots.

IMO, San Diego tends to shut down pretty early compared to many big cities so I think time is your limiting factor.

Extraordinary Desserts (2 locations) is good but INCREDIBLY rich. I have an enormous sweet tooth and I generally can’t finish a slice of their cake… also I don’t think either one is open past 11pm.

D Bar is good but, again, I think they close even earlier on Sundays.

So you might have better luck with restaurants that are open late and also serve good dessert.

Brian’s 24 may be a good choice.

City Delicatessen is another option, decent deli food and baked goods if you’re into big pieces of cake or pie-- but it is definitely not fancy. Open til midnight on Sundays.

FYI Yelp has a feature for checking limiting search by when things are open, although it doesn’t seem to work very well.

Thanks all!

Extraordinary Desserts looks great but, yes, it does close at 11:00pm on Sundays. 11:00pm is possible but not probably.

My initial thought was to take them to Chocolat on University but that one closes at 11:00 on Sunday.

City Delicatessen is just a block away from Chocolat and it’s open until midnight- so, that is possible.

amaguri, Brian’s 24 might be perfect! Thanks for checking in.
D Bar is, can I assume, a bar? The nieces are 16 and (going to be) 18, so it’s gotta be a place where I can take them. Brain’s 24 has a look of a bar from the street view, but it’s clearly bannered “Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner” so looks like it will work for us.

Thanks!

D Bar definitely serves alcoholic beverages, but it is also a restaurant/dessert destination so I think your nieces would be totally in the clear.

IMO, City Deli has perfectly acceptable desserts, especially for kids. I could go for an eclair right now! Plus they have old fashioned jukeboxes on the table :).

D Bar really is like a (fancy, minimalist) bar with really good food.

Chocolat’s desserts tend to be crepe-based and are very good.

It sounds like a fun night!

“Best”? As though there were an array of choices? You do know you’re talking about San Diego, right? San Diego, RFD, right? The City That Never Sleeps Because It’s in a Coma, right? To ask for “the best” is kind of silly. You should be asking if one even exists at all.

That said, there are some coffee houses on Park Blvd. (near El Cajon Blvd.) that I think are open late, and should have something decent for dessert. Can’t remember their names, though.

We went to Brian’s 24 and it was great!

I got a caramel blondie sundae which was amazing. The girls wanted hot chocolate, which satisfied their sweet tooth, but were really excited for the tots- which were really quite good. Our waiter was awesome, we loved him.

Even though it was a Sunday, the bars still had the streets crowded with people when we arrived around 10:45 and parking was kind of difficult- but we found a place soon enough and were glad that we made the effort since we ended up liking Brian’s so much.

And the Monkees concert kicked ass! We had so much fun! So, all in all it was a wonderful night.

Thanks for all the suggestions, and special thanks to amaguri!

awesome, thanks for following up

The Mayor’s Office

O.K., that was pretty funny. You’re docked a few points for bringing the joke so late in the game, but it was pretty good.
