Reading Mervyn Peake’s “Mr. Pym,” wherein he relates, of the Channel Island of Sark (setting for his story), that the male dogs are very morose, because by law, no bitches are allowed on the island.

Really? Why?

The book was published ca. 1953. True then?

Not quite. (Not quite in 1953 either).

Dogs: Unspayed bitches are not allowed to be kept on the Island except by the Seigneur. This is not a feudal law but dates back to the seventeenth century when, as now, too many dogs could cause problems with sheep farming. There are no restrictions on short stay visitors from the British Isles.
