Savannah Guthrie (Today Show, co-anchor) mother missing

Pima County Sheriff’s Department has 100 of its detectives working the case, along with the county’s search and rescue unit. The FBI has been called to help, along with multiple local, regional and national law enforcement partners.

I’m cautiously optimistic, that the criminals recognized there’s a potential $ value in keeping Nancy Guthrie alive.

The article states There has been “no proof of life” and no follow-up communication connected to the ransom letters.

Yes, that can’t be good in a ransom case.

Savannah Guthrie had a few Today Show segments with her mother, and I saw something on the news that suggested it was possible that info about where she lived was inadvertently shared publicly. So it may not be specifically because Savannah is a TV personality, so much as a crime of opportunity.

Imagine the choice the family is faced with. You cannot, of course put a price on a loved one’s life, and I imagine they would pay any sum to have her returned home safely.

However, the notion of sending millions of dollars to a random bitcoin account - with no real proof that the accountholder has anything at all to do with the kidnapping - is crazy.

mmm

Is it possible not to be following the case? I’ve seen it on the national morning shows, local news in Boston, and mentioned on NPR. I absolutely want Nancy Guthrie to be found safe and unharmed, but the amount of media attention seems excessive to me. I also wonder if all the coverage improves her chances, or makes them worse. If the kidnappers feel like there’s too much heat, they could decide to cut their losses and run.

Media frenzy always happens with abduction and murder cases. Especially if the people involved are WASPS.

I can’t think of a year that’s gone by without at least one or two cases that the media covers excessively.

I find the Nancy Guthrie case extremely painful because of her advanced age, fragility, and vulnerability.

:folded_hands:

Yes. I’ve heard it mentioned on NPR, i think, but other than seeing this thread pop up, I’m really not following it.

I’ll say that my experience in the insurance industry (where i might see a biased sample, because we sold kidnap insurance) is that kidnaps of adults* are generally an attempt for ransom. It’s not uncommon for the victim to be killed if something “goes wrong”. But this looks like a somewhat ordinary kidnapping from my perspective, except the kidnappers were dumb to go for someone famous rather than someone wealthy and reclusive. Dumb kidnappers are worse for the victims, sadly. But until there’s a body, there’s hope.

'* I think most kidnaps of children are custody disputes gone nasty.

Having never heard of either Guthrie, it’s not wild speculation to guess it’s someone known to the victim. I’m 50/50 on the ransom, it smells like diversion or cruel hoax (edit: by an unrelated criminal) to me. The supposed wealth and fame of the family does raise the possibilty.

I’m split between believing that the kidnapping is all about money (because Savannah Guthrie is a TV personality and obviously all TV personalities are rolling in money) or believing that there’s some perverse political motive (because all mainstream media personalities are dangerous liberals.)

I’m also becoming concerned that Nancy Guthrie had a heart attack or injury or something else that proved fatal and the kidnappers are hiding that while trying to squeeze out a ransom

Savannah Guthrie got right up Trump’s nose as moderator at an NBC news town hall.

He does not forget these slights.

Sheriff Nanos is handling the glare of the media pretty now. His department seems to have the resources for a major investigation.

Short video

I had never heard of this lady but my coworker mentioned it, and thinks it’s because Savannah had insider knowledge of the Epstein case and this is some attempt to silence her. That sounds to me like a conspiracy theory - any possibility it’s true?

It makes zero logical sense. It’s up to your coworker to back up what she says, not for others to disprove something so patently ridiculous.

CT for sure.

Anything is possible. The question ought to be “is it plausible enough to have a decent chance at being true?” And that’s where it fails.

CT thinking includes skipping that step, where anything that’s possible is equally plausible with anything else.

My vote is it’s stochastic terrorism. Some random goofball(s) high on RW propaganda and self-righteous outrage decided that Savannah Guthrie was evil because … reasons … and needed to be hurt. And their bright idea was that kidnapping Mom for ransom would be a great way to do that.

Trump also understands that was her job. His reponse with an offer to help her was probably sincere. Impossible as this board may find that.

I’m not so sure this is true. Trump does not like female reporters. Shown over and over.

But this might be a hijack, so I’m out.

That is utterly ridiculous, but not as ridiculous as thinking he wants to help anyone.

It’s a huge news story that didn’t include Trump, so he found a way to insert himself into it. I think he sincerely wanted to make this about him. That may have the side effect of deploying more manpower and helping solve the case.

There are 4 communities that call themselves The Foothills, in Arizona, The Catalina Foothills near Tucson, where she lived, also Auwatukee near Pheonix, Fortuna Foothills near Yuma, and Sonoran Foothills near North Phoenix.

Most are retirement communities for SnowBirds. People that head south for the winter and come back North in the Spring before the weather gets really hot. I have a couple friends n the Yuma Foothills right now, They will return north sometime in April.

The Trump hate is so strong on this board that it is impossible the have a conversation.
