It’s come down to it. I must find another job or surrender my sanity to the chaos at my current employment. And cadolphin suggests that I come to you, my longtime friends, for advice.
My education and background is in management, radio broadcasting and sales. I was an on-air personality for 15 years before I realized that I needed some retirement and benefits which radio stations were not supplying. I’ve sold telecommunications, automobiles (ewwww!) pianos/organs/musical instruments, and classified advertising. My strong point is in marketing, not in cold calling, but I can face-to-face sell and soft close along with the best of them.
I am a very quick reader (600 page paperback book in approx. 4 hours with excellent comprehension), and a good proofreader and graphic arts designer. 3 organizations employed me as editor in the past 10 years, and have “oohed” and “ahhed” over my newsletter prowess. My computer skills date back to 1973 and an IBM Model 360/2, and I am fluent in all Microsoft products (sorry, Mac and Linux users…). My interests are amateur radio, fraternal organizations, music (play several instruments), and electronics troubleshooting.
I have an associate of arts degree in radio/tv broadcasting with a minor in journalism. I was a good news reader, but not a good “investigative reporter,” always unable to ask the really “hard” questions.
Knowing my background, what would you suggest I look into? I’ve been on and off the same job now for almost 10 years, and leaving this job does terrify me in a way, but I know it needs to be done.
Please help me brainstorm and keep my sanity. An insane 6’ 7" man is not a pretty sight. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
You may want to check websites like www.monster.com to see what types of job listings they have. It will give you some idea of what’s out there, and maybe you’ll find something you hadn’t even heard of before
I should have added, I have registered at the online sites, and have received nothing more promising than the “Work At Home and earn $60,000 per year by working part time at your computer” offers. Most of the jobs listed on Monster are entry level positions, one that I remember I was matched up with wanted a general manager for a candy company and offered the princely sum of $17,000/year to start.
Given your described strengths and weaknesses I would suggest you look seriously into getting a real estate license and selling real estate full time (being successful part time is much more difficult). If you are reasonably self motivated and organized you can make a good living and craft your own future. I have sold commercial real estate for over 16 years, and if you will apply yourself it can be very rewarding.
Go about it the other way, I think…don’t use the job search sites, but think of a company you might want to work for, and go to their website to see what’s available. Just randomly looking around, I see at this site http://www.sonypictures.com/spe/jobs_index.html that Sony pictures needs a Marketing/Sales Promotions manager. I don’t even know where Culver City is, and I’m not going to look it up, but you see what I mean. There are jobs out there, but most companies won’t hire upper level positions from search engine applications. Go to them.
That being said, I can’t do anything about the insanity. Tall people are predisposed to lunacy due to their proximity to the moon. If you want to avoid the bug-house, I recommend a course of painful shank-shortening surgery. Then you’ll be more grounded.
I resent that pancake. Your moon god will not infiltrate my waffle house. Perhaps I ought to come visit you and show you exactly how to wear a big floppy hat? It’s the brim that makes it grunty. Fish stick.
I saw on CNN last night that some guy graduating from some college ( don’t recall) had put out an email to friends and family his resume and, if they were the ones to help with a lead to a job, he would give them two round trip tickets to Hawaii or Mexico.
I thought that was a pretty smart marketing move on his part.
Since you are a good salesman AND you have broadcasting background, have you thought about selling radio spots? I worked briefly for a small radio station in the Chicago area, and its all about the advertising and selling those slots. I’m sure THOSE people get some sort of benefits package, right? I mean, how could they get anyone to work for them if they didn’t? What corner of the world do you live in? (Sorry…I couldn’t decipher your pig-latin)

The Cleveland Cavaliers could use a rebounder. Heck, at this point 5 corpses stacked in front of the basket would provide a greater defensive presence than anyone they suit up.
From here in Silly Koan Valley, around friends I am hearing that real-estate is the way to go these days, if you have any sales background.
