On Valentine’s Day 2011, Michael Fishback of Great Whale Conservancy, and several companions, came across a Humpback whale that had gotten entangled in a fishing net and was sure to die. Over the course of several hours, the humans worked tirelessly to free the whale (nicknamed Valentina), cutting the net with the only small knife they had. Once free, the whale celebrated by breaching the water almost 40 times and slapping her tail and fins.
Cool! I was living in San Francisco in the late 1980s when Humphrey the Humpback Whale got lost in the bay. Once, they spotted him near Candlestick Park. I lived nearby and when I heard that on the radio I hopped on my motorcycle and went down to see him. It wasn’t an easy place to get to, so other than a couple of news vans there were about 20 people.
Valentina was caught in a net near Loreto in Baja California Sur, Mexico, in the Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California.
