Oh crap! We left before the credits ended. What did I miss? Anything of interest?
Cut to the cannibal tribe, skeleton dancer and all… Pan over to the throne. The cute doggie is sitting in the throne with a femur in his mouth. Black.Probably not as significant as the credit-tag in the first one, just fun.
Thanks. I’d have been up all night wondering. I almost always stay till the end of the credits and I must have missed that by a couple of seconds.
I remember it clearly.
pang
Whoa, what was that?
I completely forgot I had a sex drive! It’s been dormant for years!
Just saw it today. I have a bit of a different perspective it seems, so I’m curious as to the reactions I’ll get.
First, I thought it fair that I read through all the replies. It was tough. Almost as tough as sitting through the movie.
I didn’t see the first one, so I’ll admit to being lost in many of the scenes. The jokes and connections to the first movie didn’t register with me (obviously), so for me, this movie had to stand on its own. It didn’t do a very good job.
Some thoughts and observations:
-
Too long and disjointed. Many of the scenes just dragged, and I found myself looking at my watch on a number of occasions. The water wheel/sword fight/key grab scene seemed to go on for 30 minutes, and that was 25 minutes too long. I felt that way with a number of scenes.
-
I didn’t understand why Captain Jack Sparrow seemed to be such a girly-man. Was this consistent with the first movie? He ran like a woman and swished around the entire movie, to the point of distraction. Is this part of his character or was it just meant to garner cheap laughs?
-
The special effects were outstanding.
-
I made my comparison to these movies with the Indiana Jones series, not the Star Wars or Back to the Future franchises. The points in this thread were good on both counts, but to me, the movie reminded me of an Indiana Jones movie… constant action and adventure, hunting for treasure, and implausible escapes.
-
I wonder if anyone could tell me what age group this movie franchise is targeted for? I can see teenagers loving it, but as an adult, I was bored. I will admit that perhaps part of my problem was I didn’t see the first film.
-
I’d like to know if any of you would recommend me renting the first film… Would it be worth it to help close some of the gaps, or would it be more of the same? How long is the first film? I’m afraid I’d be bored to tears.
-
Keira Knightley reminded me of Winona Ryder. I found it distracting, given Depp’s past relationship with Ryder. (not significant, I know… just something I noticed and didn’t see mention of it anywhere else in this thread. Anyone else see the resemblance?)
-
With the exception of Knightly and Bloom (I think), who looked like they walked off an “Orbit Gum” commercial, everyone had bad teeth. I get it. They are pirates. Not too many dentists around. But sheesh! I found that to be more disgusting to look at than some of the other stuff, like the jar of eyeballs.
-
People that took their children… were your kids disturbed by the violence and death scenes, or did they take them in stride? My theater was filled with mostly adults, so I couldn’t get a read on this.
-
Is it explained in the first movie why Capt. Jack wears eye shadow/makeup? Is that part of an inside joke (i.e. the “swishbuckling” pirate) or is it just his “look”?
-
I had difficulties understanding some of the accents, which meant I had trouble understanding the dialog in spots. That was frustrating, but perhaps if I saw the first movie it would not have been such an issue. Thoughts?
-
Finally, a question… if the heart found in the chest was cut into pieces, what exactly is supposed to happen? And why didn’t Capt. Jack stick a knife into it when he had a chance?
I’ll admit, I was drawn to the movie because of the huge turnout it received from its opening weekend. But I was very disappointed and couldn’t wait to get out of the theater. I kept trying to get interested in the characters, or the plot, or something, but it was all over the place. I *did *know going into the movie that there was plans for a third, so the cliffhanger ending didn’t surprise me and I didn’t feel cheated just for that. There were two+ hours of the movie that made me feel cheated.
YES! I have for a long time. None of my friends see it. Glad to know I’m not the only one.
That bugged me through the whole rest of the film. I figured that was why Jack felt the paper was important because you could make a copy of the key with it, instead of having to find the key.
I’m glad you mentioned the Cthuhlu stuff too, CalMeachem, I was starting to think no one else noticed it and my sweet pea was just pacifying me.
The teeth grossed me out also. I forgot to mention that before. I practically grew up in a dental office (Mom’s a dental assistant) and she wanted to schedule the pirates for major cleaning and dental work. It almost distracted her from the movie (only be because of what she does. She loved the movie.).
Clearly anyone who didn’t like the movie is a blasphemer. Did you ignore the hotness that was Johnny Depp? (My dad and sweetpea pointed out this was not a draw for them.) I’m sure that at some point in time, a movie I loath with be mostly loved and I’m wear the scarlet B then.
Finally saw this yesterday, and I freaking LOVED it. Better than the first film (which I rewatched Saturday night in preparation).
Some thoughts:
-
Gruesome!!! Good lord, the beginning scenes with the crows and the guys in cages! I’m a big fan of horror movies and that even made me wince. This movie was WAY darker and more violent than the first…probably one of the reasons I liked it better.
-
I totally agree with what everyone was saying about Jack being much more of a scoundrel in this film. And of course, I lusted after him all the more for it.
-
I was sooo, sooo happy when Elizabeth finally kissed Jack!!! Jesus wept, I’ve been waiting for that since the first film. I am hoping against hope that in the third film she ends up ditching Will altogether. Although, even Will was more redeeming in this movie than in the first, I actually caught myself not hating him a couple times.
-
Davy Jones and his crew were amazing. I can’t even imagine how much work must have gone into creating them. I spent the whole movie trying to figure out why Davy Jones seemed familiar; when we got home and looked it up, it all made sense: he was Phillip, Shaun’s stepfather in Shaun of the Dead!
-
This movie is huge. We saw it Sunday afternoon, trying to avoid the crowds, and the manager of the theater had to come in and greet everybody, and then ask folks to please move together so that there were more seats available, as there were tons more people coming in. And this was still about 15 minutes before the movie started.
-
Mr. Bunny totally caught that the voodoo chick was the girl that Davy Jones had been in love with. I missed it completely.
-
We forgot to stay through the credits, but after reading the spoilers here, I totally called what the secret little surprise scene after the credits was regarding.
-
There were lots of little in-jokes and such with regards to the first movie, but nowhere near as bad as others had led me to believe.
Like I was saying: fabulous movie. I really can’t think of anything I would have cut to make it shorter, and I enjoyed it so much it didn’t seem too long at all. I can’t wait to see it again, and I can’t wait for the third.
What do you think the significance of that Opening Scene with the prisoners going into the gruesome scary dark tower?
Will we be seeing this set again do you think?
That was pretty spooky…I plan on seeing the movie again, that whole opening sequence kinda lost me. Seemed like a prison, to be sure, but I wonder what manner of prisoner ends up there? Pirates seem to pretty much be hung on the spot upon the authority of local government, and if piracy is so bad that even aiding in the escape of a pirate sends you to the gallows, I wonder what kind of crime one has to commit to get the caged-and-pecked-to-death-by-hungry-birds sentence!
That would be Bill Nighy. He was the best thing in “Love Actually”.
Not just in the works; the third one was filmed right after this one. It’s due out next Spring, I believe.
Addendum to Bibliocat: Further shooting in August. Might be a cameo from Sparrow’s “dad”.
My wife and I have watched this movie a few times over the past couple weeks.
I’ll admit that I did not quite follow in the theater the first time, but upon review, I will say this one is a great movie. It’s great, not just good.
It’s much better if you already know the story, so I’ll admit that they do a bad job with the narrative. Once you understand, however, it plays very well.
It really is the best movie I’ve seen this year, replacing V for Vendetta and United 93.
By they way, my wife pointed out something in the theater.
Did anyone else notice the monkey reacts to a pair of boots when they first visit the “Voodoo Lady”? My wife actually leaned over to me and said, “I think Barbossa is in the Voodoo Hut.”
I thought she was crazy…but she was right! Apparently, the monkey sees Barbossa’s boots when they are first there(right after the mark is revealed on Jack’s hand) and reacts with a slight squeal.
Did anyone else notice this?
Mr. Bunny noticed this when he and I saw it on Sunday, which was actually his 2nd viewing. I completely missed it.
I’m going to see it again on Saturday while the boy is at work and I will look for this and for The similarity between the locket at Tia Dalma’s hut and the locket that Davy Jones has, which I also missed…he wouldn’t mind a 3rd viewing necessarily, I think it’s just having to listen to me squeal over Captain Jack that puts him off.
I’ve forgotten when this was. Anyone? And why was it in any way a meta-joke?
After the Voodoo Lady exposes Captain Jack’s hand and see’s the “dark mark” on it, everyone is looking around.
Jackk says, “My vision is good as ever…” then.
I assume this is Captain Jack clarrifying that he hasn’t worn his hand down masturbating to the point of going blind.
Am I right? Only I laughed at that joke in the theater, since it is just a quick line.
That’s right. The dark mark on his hand looks like it has some hair growing out of it, and you know the old myths about hairy palms and blindness as a result of masturbation. Jack utters that line “Just so you know, my vision’s as good as ever,” as he looks kind of embarrassed.
I was the only one in my theater that laughed at that, too, so I think a lot of people either didn’t hear it or didn’t catch the meaning.
