“loonie” is a derogatory term, but it is not a derogatory term that is specific to one race or religion. “jeezoids” is a pejoritive term that is leveled at Christians. Mature, non-bigoted folks may very well use derogative terms such as “stupid”, “loonie”, “space-cadet” etc, but it is wrong to use perjoritive bigoted terms such as “kike”, “nigger” “wetback” or “jeezer”.

I said Louis Farrakkan was a “bigot”, and I can also call him a “rabble rouser” or a “wrong thinker” or perhaps even a “loonie”- that is what persons who disagree strongly with him may do. But I may not use any perjorative racial term to apply to him- that is what bigots do.

The term “jeezer” is used by either the ignorant, or by the bigoted. I now assume you are no longer ignorant of it’s perjorative content.

DITWD, I’m gonna say three things, and then I’m dropping this:

First:

think there’s a difference between a term like “kike” and what I mean by “jeezoid”. The former is a slur based solely on the religion/race/culture of the target. In this sense it implies that there’s something wrong with the person’s religion etc., which is clearly bigoted (see second part of this post).

When I say “jeezoid”, I’m talking about the loonies who are putting up web sites to count the number of days til “the rapture” or trying to “save” all their friends and neighbors by hitting them over the head with potatoes that are shaped like God, or what have you. I have no problem whatsoever with Christianity in general, or any Christian religion in specific. But there happens to be a type of person who calls themself a Christian (accuracy debatable) and spouts this type of nonsense. The epithet is not directed at their religion but at their behavior. Which said behavior happens to coincide with going on about Jesus. (Not necessarily having anything to do with what any religions actually ascribe to the man!) To restate: going on about Jesus and the rapture in a loony way does not necessarily make one a Christian. Anyone can talk about this stuff til the cows come home.

I don’t consider that bigoted any more than calling someone a “computer geek” is bigoted because it’s directed specifically at people who use a computer.

I can see, though, that someone might use the term to refer to Christians as being inherently fucked up or wrong. And I agree fully that that would be bigoted. Speaking of which…

Don’t see how what I said is bigoted, since what I said has nothing to do with defending my own beliefs or insisting that someone else’s are wrong (I think I made that clear above?).

Interestingly, it’s usually the type of people I’m mocking (again, for their behavior, not their beliefs) who are the bigoted ones…

Third, a clarification of my original comment:

I joked that it’d be a lot more quiet here for the rest of us after the rapture. You immediately went off about calling someone “Jewboy”, which lately got me thinking that you might have interpreted my statement in some “final solution” manner, meaning I wanted to “get rid” of the “jeezoids”. No, actually, they’re the ones who say they are leaving. I’m just waiting for them to leave already.

What is it about his fundie crap that gets you folks so riled up? Ain’t it kind of the intellectual equivalent of beating up a mentally deficient kid?

I find it laughable, at best; paranoid delusion at its worst.

And seriously not worth the mental energy some of you seem capable of devoting to it.

So what gives? Am I missing something? Not reading between the lines enough?

Or perhaps not taking the implied threat seriously enough?

Hey I’m trying to lighten up a bit about what I post here!! ;). Also for those who participated in my What is your idea of a “real” christian. Thanks. I used that last night in a sermon and several expressed interest in that part.
