Given peeker’s extremely aggressive style of play thus far, why make the assumption that he would not claim Doctor if he were in fact Vanilla Town? Conversely, if Drain Bead were scum, why did she claim VT and not doctor? If claiming VT is more credible than claiming doctor, why wouldn’t scum claim VT? Might this be another WIFOM-type argument?
I’m not either of those two, but I’ll give it a shot.
It’s a very anti-town move to lie and say you’re a power role, because you run the risk of a counterclaim exposing a power role. Then, you get mislynched. Scum will claim doc rather than vanilla for a few reasons. First, a doc claim explains why they don’t die at night. It’s more likely a claimed doc won’t get lynched–a claimed vanilla, this early, is the least bad mislynch.
Right, for Town to false-claim a power role is basically setting up a mislynch, later if not right then. Barring some complication caused by weird nonstandard roles, the general role is that Town should never lie; withhold information sometimes, yes, but never lie outright. This leads to the popular maxim “Lynch all Liars”.
Claiming Vanilla Town, like any other claim, is something scum would like to avoid as it closes off the option of making another false claim in the future. Generally, you would expect it to have less of a deterrent effect on voters than a power role claim would. Probably for this reason, I have never seen a scum falsely claim Vanilla except in mass claim situations…so it is certainly possible that a scum might try the move, hoping people will think “scum would never do that!” Thus, indeed, this would be a proper use of the term “WIFOM” (hope Meeko is taking notes out there somewhere;))
the confusion is for the fracking scum, fcs. if i say “the” that means one thing. if i say “a” that means another.
look, i am a doc. you either believe it or you don’t. but when i flip doc no way in hell is my death going to give scummers any more information than they have. namely, i am a doc.
are there more?
is self protection allowed or not?
yaknow, i’d rather scummers be wringing their hands over those issues than town. so if you are town why in the world would you give a rat’s ass?
Thanks much for the Mafia 101, Drain Bead & Thing Fish. Most of the Mafia how-tos I’ve tried to educate myself on were either extremely basic, or way over my head.
The first part of my position is that I’m against a lynch of peekercpa AT THIS TIME, because of the risk of losing a Doctor and also because we will have more evidence about him on Day 2 than the others whose heads are on the chopping block. That said, he’s the most likely to be scum as doctor claims are a scoundrels last refuge, it seems.
jpei has concentrated on game mechanics & tit for tat type stuff. Not giving us a lot to judge him on; maybe we’ll have more later. Mix a little!
As I’ve gotten more used to Drain Bead’s writing style, I think I understand her arguments better. I’ve learned for my own part that it’s easy to get stuck in the past arguing a point that has been made moot by subsequent events & I believe that’s what caused her apparent inconsistencies in the town alignment declaration discussion. Some smoke there, sure, but I’m really underenthused about her being lynched.
I’ll take a look next at the less usual suspects to see if I find anything more voteworthy.
McDougal was offered 500 pounds for his dog by an American and 100 pounds by an Englishman. Much to everyone’s surprise he accepted the bid from the Englishman. Afterwards he explained. “The dog can walk back home from England but he’ll never swim the Atlantic.”
I am wondering why you claimed when you did. You were not in the vote lead and didn’t look like you were in danger of it, either. I’m not a huge fan of power roles claiming before it’s absolutely necessary, and I’m not sure if it was necessary for you to claim when you did. What was your thinking behind the claim at a time when you weren’t the one on the block?
i know this may sound trite, but i want my team to win. in this case town.
i computed that my claim would make the most sense for me and town. because i was durn close to getting lynched if not actually on the scaffold. just a swing of a vote or two could have accomplished my death.
even though lynching townies is almost unavoidable it’s still not ideal for town. so saving my butt is good for town. also, what good is a doc unless they can protect something valuable. seriously, what good is a doc that stays in the middle of the road to avoid getting lynched and then self protects at night to save themselves. sounds real self directed. i mean back in the bad days maybe staying alive was a goal because it might be a month or so until another game kicked off and what is a person to do in the mean time. with the other boards that is no longer any type of issue. so play for the team, play for the team.
and now that i think about it i think it is net positive for town, imho. Day ones can be kind of disjointed but it seems like we have had some good feedback so far.
also, what is a scummy to do going forward.
leave me alive and hope that they can get me lynched? wtf happens if i get lucky and block a kill? or if someone else comes forward that should be protected now what do they do? do they try to nk me? oh shoot, i self protect and they lose a night kill. oh crap, they succeed, who does that point to? who was he suspicious of and did he get offed cause he was to close to bone? or is that a double trap?
having sat on the scum board too many times in my mafia career i can tell you from experience that they wifom as much as town. as a scum member i always hated the unknown. so they have been given a multiple choice test early on. i just felt like adding a couple of other options to the question.
See, the thing is, scum don’t give a shit about your games. They don’t need information, they just need to stay alive and plink Town off one by one. Town needs information. You playing head games, and being ridiculously obvious about it, is detrimental to the Town. These are things you already know.
If I wasn’t already voting for you, I’d vote for you again.
For one thing, because we’re trying to figure out if your claim is genuine or not. Emphatically leaving open the possibility of more than one Doctor, like you did, could be a tactic to prepare against a counterclaim. Is it? Obviously, we don’t know.
On the subject of vanilla claims, there’s probably not much point for a Scum on the chopping block to false-claim vanilla, because it probably won’t move any votes. If I were voting for someone who then claimed vanilla, I know that I for one wouldn’t let that sway me. Really, all a claim of vanilla means is that we know that person isn’t a Town power role, and “Don’t lynch me, I’m not a power role” doesn’t really carry any weight.
This I think is a good idea. It doesn’t tell us or the Scum anything they don’t already know, but if there are other Docs it will help verify the claim. If there is only the one Doc, no harm done.
The only danger is if there are multiple Docs or whatever, but they have different colour.
How about the full role? Plus side scum would have to manufacture one and might make a mistake, down side if peeker is really a Doc the full role would reveal its mechanics, which would be an aid to scum…
I’d hang fire on the full role text, but the title is worth throwing out there.
If we assume that there is more than one doctor, why do we need to assume that they’ll have the same title or role profile? If peek says he’s a Town Medic and someone else claims Town First-Aider, (to make up two examples) how does that help us do anything?
Well, it wasn’t as if she was telling the truth in the statement was she? Should I just let it go? You say it’s lése-majesté, I say it’s covering, considering that two people in the same conversation said the opposite to her.
Why, I don’t know, this is a closed game and we do’t have a lot of info yet, but it certainly pinged me. So, do I think she is scummy. Yes, or I would not have voted for her.
Did I take it personally, probably true, since **Allwalker **did the something similar in the Day about the end time for the game.
Actually, I still have a couple of questions outstanding. AllWalker - why did you choose Friday as the end date when most people preferred Wednesday?
jpei - Going back to voting. Assuming you are alive tomorrow, will you/can you vote in the Leader Election or will you abstain again?
