The Independent vacillates between right and left, on balance probably leaning very slightly towards the right (IMHO only); it certainly isn’t famous for being especially biased. By US standards it would be completely centrist, or possibly even slightly to the left.
The article in question does seem to be somewhat skewed, however, and the writer’s subtle twisting of the Moore show does make me wonder what her agenda is in general.

Moore is talking about black Americans, and the columnist is talking about Britons of Afro-Carribbean descent. These are not in any way the same people. The columnist is confused, her statements incoherent.
And is that supposed to validate Moore’s remarks?
Here’s what he said.
It was in pretty poor taste. Moore was trying to shock, it seems, and he ended up blaming the victim. I doubt his ass would have been jumping on hijackers that day.
Remember that until 9/11 hijackers took over planes for politcal motives, not suicidal ones. A passenger who fought would be trying to do the job of a SWAT or Delta team. Bad idea.
90 African Americas or Skinheads? They would have fought. I think anyone would have fought if they knew what was going to happen. If they didn’t know, I doubt their reaction woudl be any different.
I’m sorry, this was a thoughtless statement by Moore, at best.
Exactly. I don’t believe the people in the first three planes knew what was happening (there was one passenger making a phone call from the Tower Two plane, and she said, puzzled, “I see water…now a city…JESUS!!”, and that was it). The people in the fourth plane did know. And they–two Hispanics, three blacks, one Japanese tourist, and 34 white folks–fought back quickly and valiantly, losing their lives but saving thousands of others. And we just don’t know exactly what happened on the first three; each of those planes had one more guy on it than the PA one, and given how little room there was one more maniac in the aisle blocking the cockpit could make a huge difference.
We’ll see if this story has legs. I didn’t know about the skinhead and coal-miner remarks; that makes the statement a little more understandable.
But thinking of the fourth plane alone, the Fuck You stands.
