I don’t always get to see Scrubs, but I always enjoy it when I do. Last nights ep was great, and the ending…sigh. That was just too sad.
Brendan Fraser returned only to have his character die of the leukemia he had previously been diagnosed with.
My question though is, how much of his presence was in the Doctor’s imagination and did he die when I think he did or was the funeral the reason for the sister coming to town in the first place? I suspect he died during the episode.
Yeah, the ending was a real kick in the gut. It was intentional, that it wasn’t clear if he ever was really there (ala Fight Club). My guess is that he wasn’t, but I would have to rewatch it to be sure.
The way he was shadowing Dr. Cox tells me he wasn’t really there at all. Still, I was surprised at the end. That was so sad when JD said, “Where do you think you are?” to Dr. Cox.
Since he was talking to people other than Cox in the first part of the episode, and also given the drastic change in Cox’s demeanor halfway through, I’m thinking that he died unexpectedly at the point at which we were meant to believe that the old man had suddenly coded. The way JD broke the news, and Cox’s reaction, seemed extreme just for losing and old man. I think they’re probably accustomed to that sort of thing.
Also, people were talking about the kid’s birthday during the whole episode, so I think it had been planned but was then postponed for the funeral.
Sob - no kidding. Scrubs is one of the only sitcoms that can pull off a “Very Special Episode” without getting all sappy and maudlin.
When JD asked, “Where do you think you are?” and we saw they were at the funeral, at first I thought for some reason they were at the old man’s funeral, and then realized it was Brendan Frazier’s.
