What a cool idea! Since I’m not very talented, I doubt I’ll contribute, but I can’t wait to see what other people write and design. I think Ed Zotti, Euty and David B deserve a big hand for taking the time to do this for us.
I’m sure it was all squared away when Euty and Dave submitted it to Eddie.
He probably took to it with blue pencil and white out.
But, yeah, the E-Zine sounds like a great idea. Looking forward to seeing som of the Dopers with a literatic in print (pixels).
This looks tempting, but daunting. What sort of articles are they looking for? Is this the kind of place I should try out those weird articles that I didn’t know who would be interested in publishing? I’ve a backlog of really STRANGE stuff that I’ve wanted to test on an unsuspecting public. (If you don’t believe me, look at my posts.)
I see lots of poetry entries heading this way…
Sounds very, very cool. And perhaps less intimidating than submission to a magazine. Hmmmm…
Damn…can’t submit anything. Well, hell.
I submitted a few things that have been on the boards at one time or another.
I wonder if we’ll all get free e-mail subscriptions?
And Falcon, why CAN’T you submit anything?
Actually, since this an unofficial website, Ed’s involvement has been just to look over our stuff and make sure we’re not stepping on anyone’s toes, and edit and post out announcement. Ed’s a pretty busy guy, what with having Cecil lording it over him all the time, so I want to take a short opportunity to thank him for taking the time to do this for us. (After I pestered him mercilessly about it.) I owe you a beer, Ed!
From here on in, though, it in mine and David’s ballpark. I think it’s going to be interesting to see what’s out there. Maybe scary too.
Falcon, do we need to start a StraightDopeXXX Forum for you elsewhere? Is that it? Allow me to join you if that’s it…
Why can’t I submit…let’s see. My poetry SUCKS. And my other types of writing falls into two categories. One, erotica, which Dave and Euty have stated they won’t take. Fair enough. Two, fanfic. Which has copyright issues. So that places me out of the running. Ah well.
And soul, come join me anytime…
What about articles that deal with my musings on everyday life? I am not a fiction writer (well I am, but only enough to get a good grade in elementary school whilst writing about a giant hot dog.)
I have the poetic skills of Marcel Marceau.
I figure my only hope is to submit something vaguely Dave Barryesque. Is that something that will be includable?
When they said subject matter was pretty much open, I went with that and just sent three journal-like articles detailing three of my more…interesting?..teaching days. As a frustrated writer, I have an enormous unpublished collection to select from, and moRe is certainly on the way (but I’ll hold off for a while…hate to drown the poor fellows!).
All I have to say is HOORAY for David and Euty for providing an outlet! (Even if the work isn’t accepted… :o )
Without guarunteeing anything, yeah, go ahead and send it in. At very least, we’ll take a look at it and get back to you.
I want to thank you guys. Seems like a great idea. Good job putting it together. And I hope it works out.
I’ll be submiting some stuff. The usual illegible badly spelled communist drivel.
Mully, your first step on the road to recovery is to quit using words like “whilst.” wink
Um, uh, he writes six column inches per week and his books are assembled from pre-published material. Just how busy can he be?
Quoting CalMeacham:
THAT is what I’d like to see!
This whole thing sounds like fun. Except for the “no porn, libel, or plagarism” rule we can submit, and expect to get published, ANYTHING! This is a pretty eclectic group and it will be fun to see what gets submitted. I’ve edited newsletters and the biggest problem is getting enough content. I don’t see that as a problem with the Dopers; we’ve demonstrated that a bigger problem is getting us to shut up.
And yes, Eutychus, you can take that as me volunteering to help if you need it.
Since the guidelines expect us to use proper grammer and spelling, then isn’t that placing a heavy burden on those of us in the teeming millions? It’s a good thing for me that Word comes with a grammer checker.
OK, I just submitted some “stuff”. What’s the ETA for the first issue? Oh, and thanks, guys. This is a great idea!
