SD server problems?

With the current push for responsible posting by the moderators I cant help but wonder… why not just upgrade the servers. Now, I realize we all can’t be rich and good looking, but if your bulging in the wrong places then you need to get a new pair of pants! (not everyone has the right to wear lycra!) I appreciate the “be responsible” push. It just makes sence. I also know that a large guest base for the SDMB is a good thing and “mundane posts” help to build community.

… and what happended to the advertisement at the top of the SDMB page? Altoids, altoids, must buy altoids… see it worked on me!

I can remember several threads recently involving poster contributions to a new server? Any info back on that?

BTW, no one ever threw me a post count party… ::sniff::

We’d love to upgrade, but at this point, we’re talking way more money than is available to a free newspaper. As for charitable contributions, it was quickly decided that, first, we’d never raise enough for the new server that way, and if we don’t have enough for the server, it’d go to waste, and secondly, that it wouldn’t be appropriate for the Chicago Reader, as a for-profit company, to be accepting donations.

The appeals for reasonable posting aren’t so much for the benefit of the server, anyway, but for the people involved: Even if the Fairy Godprogrammer did leave us forty grand for the upgrade, we’d still have overburdened mods and topics falling off the list before interested people see them.

Yes, whatever did happen to the adverts?

Appointment of a few more mods and sensible (i.e. not like Snopes MB forum-splitting would take care of that?

I agree, the mods do have a very heavy workload.

15 mods for 12,000 people? Not even moses had it that bad!

Then again, the way I understand it, a new mod isn’t something you just draw straws for… except in Coldfire’s case, of course. He got to be a mod just 'cuz Tubadiva lost a bet.
