SDMB 2012 NFL Mock Draft!!!

I’m back, so I’ll pick for the Texans, provided we make it to them this evening.

We need to pick it up to have any chance to make it through round 3 - too late I suppose. We should forego all trade negotiations, send in proxy picks if you won’t be around, and just rapid-fire this one out. If he’s willing to do the work, Omni should step in sooner to make the picks himself in the event that someone else is taking too long. Or maybe even just have someone else step in to make the pick if they feel confident/knowledgable about that particular choice.

With some effort I think we can finish round 3 before the draft begins.

I vote we call it after round 2. It’s been fun, but we’re losing momentum.

I’m heading off to bed one pick before the Broncos at #57, but I’ve sent Omniscient my pick (with a backup just in case).

I’m going to go ahead and pick for the Steelers on behalf of furt in an attempt to push things along. I’ve got a few proxies in my back pocket so I’ll be able to bang out a few picks right away.

56. Pittsburgh Steelers
Kelechi Osemele
OT, Iowa State

The Steelers have some very clear needs. Offensive Line, Linebacker and Defensive Line. They addressed one of the holes on the DL with a Nose in round one and the next most serious need in a flexible OL who can play both OG and OT for them. Osemele is perfect for that, and he’s a mauling run blocker which should very nicely fit the new post-Arians Steelers offense.

Proxy pick with commentary on behalf of TheBoltEater
57. Denver Broncos
Chris Polk
RB, Washington

This one was pretty easy, I think. I listed the Broncos needs earlier as DT, DT and DT; but in all honesty, once they’ve taken a DT in the first I would expect them to look reeeeeeal hard at a running back. Willis McGahee is on the wrong side of 30 and KnowShon has been a NoShow his whole career. The Broncos could conceivably wait longer than this - I would seriously consider taking a 2nd DT if I were them and I thought the value was right - but at this spot Chris Polk seems like an excellent combination of value and position of need.

Proxy pick on behalf of Grey Ghost
58. Houston Texans
Bruce Irvin
DE, West Virginia

Hopefully he can share some commentary at a later date.

Next up we have garygnu picking for the Falcons as a result of the trade with Green Bay followed by DCnDC picking for the Ravens and then back-to-back picks for the Patriots by ShadowFacts as a result of the trade with the 49ers. It’s Not Rocket Surgery! gets to wrap up the round for the Giants.

We don’t have time to reboot and start again before Thursday night so I suggest we simply keep on pushing through into the 3rd round and see how far we get. Anyone who’s not interested in continuing on please speak up and we’ll either replace you or I’ll make the picks in the interest of expediency.

59. Atlanta Falcons
Mitchell Schwartz, OT, Cal

The overwhelming consensus at Falcons fan sites is the need for offensive line help. May the Schwartz be with you.

Did you not get the PM I sent?

Osemale is fine. OL is the obvious need.

60. Baltimore Ravens
Brandon Brooks
OG, Miami (Ohio)

He’s big and very strong. Could stand to lose some weight. Probably can’t step into Ben Grubbs’ spot right away; needs a lot work on his pass blocking, but will do well in the Ravens’ running game and has the upside to become a quality starter with some coaching up.

Pats picks coming in just a couple minutes…

nm

  1. New England Patriots
    Trumaine Johnson
    CB, Montana

Patriots need secondary help and get great value with this pick. Several mocks I’ve seen had him going early second round. Johnson is athletically gifted and taller than any CB currently on the Pats roster. Of course, he comes from the Big Sky conference, so there’s inherent risk that he won’t be able to transition to the NFL, but if anyone can help teach him it’s Belichick.

  1. New England Patriots
    Brandon Taylor
    S, LSU

Patriots stay in the secondary looking for some depth here. I also considered G, T and RB here, but opted to stick with defense for now.

(Sorry, busy at work and cannot spend more time on analysis).

63. New York Giants
Dwayne Allen
TE, Clemson

The Giants lost two TEs in the Super Bowl, and it’s not like they were staffing the position with Pro Bowlers anyway. They have signed Martellus Bennett, but it’s still a position of weakness. Allen is the best blocker among the top TE prospects this year; he’s slow, but Jake Ballard was even slower and was successful in their system. In real life, this pick may happen, as Allen has visited the Giants recently. Some mocks have Allen going in Round 1, or at least ahead of Fleener. Grabbing him at the bottom of Round 2 would be solid value for a player who fits so well.

END OF ROUND 2

Some limited commentary.

For the Jets, after overdrafting Bobby Massie in the 1st (looks like they could have easily had him here in the 2nd.), their next need seems to be 3-4 OLB. I evidently misread Greg Cosell’s initial statement that Upshaw would be more of a 4-3 OLB than a 3-4 OLB, (which he eventually changed on his twitter feed). For one of the more idiosyncratic mocks out there, his can be found here. After reading some more sources, I think they’ll pick Upshaw 1st. But, it’s too late now, so…

From what I’ve read, they need an OLB who can rush the QB, but who can also stay at home and guard against the run. Maybin seems to have started to figure it out for them, but he’s supposedly weak against the run. He was one of their leading sack guys, but only had, IIRC, 5.5, which isn’t going to cut it. The other OLB, Calvin Pace, I’ve read hasn’t recovered from his foot injury. From the link, if he doesn’t recover his explosive power, and I don’t know if his injury is one that will permanently take a bit off his high end for athleticism, then the Jets will need another OLB. They need several other positions: speedy RB, FS (they’re set at SS with Landry), QB (still.), and Lamar Miller may be whom they target here instead.

I went with Lewis, even with his academic issues, and injury history, because the guy has good to very good measurables (though didn’t have the sacks or tackle #s you’d like to see) and evidently interviewed well. Maybe they could get him in the 3rd? Probably another workout warrior, but I had a good feeling about this guy, vs some of the other 3-4 OLB still out there. FWIW, FO’s Sackseer score likes Lewis a lot, of the guys likely to be in the 2nd round.

For the Texans, they need another WR, O-line depth, NT, and another pass rusher. None of these are what I’d call critical, with picking Hill in the 1st. (or Fleener, Mercilus, or McClellin). So, I think they have the luxury of taking a shot at high risk/high reward guys. Bruce Irvin certainly qualifies. He is a raw, vandalizing, knucklehead. He also had some of the highest agility scores at the Combine, and evidently he interviewed extremely well:

He had 14 sacks in 2010, but only 8.5 this last year; not the trend you want to see. I had the choice between Vinny Curry and Irvin here; I liked the high upside of Irvin, and I didn’t like Curry’s poorer performance at the Combine. Either would be fine. Our local guy isn’t big on Marvin Jones, but I wouldn’t mind them going WR/WR here either—it’s a huge need for them—if they didn’t like any of the OLBs left. Then again, Chris Givens is available later, as well as v. long shots like local boy Patrick Edwards.

Aside, how much should we discount Pro Day performances versus Combine performances, absent very good excuses like the athlete was still rehabbing an injury? Poor Combine performances strike me as a big red flag, as do failing piss tests pre-Draft. I mean, everybody and their agent knows when this event is. If they can’t get their preparation together to give a good performance or stay away from the weed long enough to make a good impression, how can they prepare for the daily intensive grind in the NFL?

Running late for work and need an updated list of picks. I should be able to make the Browns pick if we do round 3, but if I’m not around when the time comes someone else grab it.

Things are getting pretty complicated here so please double check this stuff for the teams you’re covering. Between IRL trades and Mock trades this is getting pretty shuffled. Strangely with all the trades we’ve made only 1 impacted a 3rd rounder. If we make it to the 4th round it’ll be spaghetti.

If someone has the time, could they post the picks by position. I know at least one of you has a spreadsheet.

I love wheeling and dealing, don’t I? I attempted to trade up in the first (but didn’t need to).

You’re on the clock BTW.
