SDMB All-Pro fantasy football league 2010

I used the method we used last year to get a draft order.

I PM’d Retrovertigo a request to send me the numbers 1-12 in random order. He sent

3
8
10
1
7
12
4
11
2
6
9
5

I asked Jimmy Chitwood to send me a list of players in our league in random order, he sent me

  1. Chitwood
  2. Omni’s Omnipotents
  3. The Gridbirds
  4. Undetermined slot
  5. Exploding Pancakes
  6. Tazmanian Devils
  7. Isotopes
  8. Frosted_Lightning
  9. New York Fanboys
  10. No Use For A Name
  11. Court Jesters
  12. The Great Old Ones

If you match those up (first number is 3, first name is Chitwood, so Chitwood drafts #3, etc) it gives us a draft order of:

1 Undetermined slot
2 New York Fanboys
3 Chitwood
4 Isotopes
5 The Great Old Ones
6 No Use For A Name
7 Exploding Pancakes
8 Omni’s Omnipotents
9 Court Jesters
10 The Gridbirds
11 Frosted_Lightning
12 Tazmanian Devils

“Undetermined slot” is probably going to be Munch. I invited him to the league and he was good enough to be flexible to join either the auction or all-pro league as needed, depending on if the original players signed up for this league or not. Doesn’t look like Kiros and Kid_A will be signing up again.

Last year we allowed pick swapping (you can customize the picks in the draft if you want to. Everyone needs the same number of picks, so it has to equal out - but you can do something like having someone trade the #5 pick and their 7th round pick for the #1 pick and that person’s 15th round pick. So if you’re more comfortable in another slot, throw out some proposals. I’m thinking of doing it myself since the #7 slot can be awkward.

Alright, we’re all set going into the draft on Thursday. Is there anything that needs to be discussed or taken care of?

I’m not a huge fan of Adrian Peterson or MJD. How indefensibly stupid would it be to take Peyton or Brees with the #2 overall pick?

Alternately, is there pre-draft trading in this league? I’d love to drop down to #5 or #6 overall. The FF value chart says that drop is worth ~200 points. I’d be willing to make a trade that benefits you up to ~50 points.

Willing to deal #7. Gotta talk later

Quick question - Kick-off/punt return yards and touchdowns count towards the individual or D/ST?

Individual. Touchdowns count as both.

So if you’re starting Reggie Bush and the Saints D/ST and Bush returns a punt for a score - Reggie would get points for the yardage and touchdown as well as the Saints D/ST would get points for the TD?

Damn. I swore this was the year that Reggie was finally dead to me but if he gets points for return yds and tds…damn.

Right, you’d get both.

Until the investigation.

Standard yahoo leagues count return TDs to the individual player, so you’d always have those. Counting return TDs to the D/ST is atypical and one of our custom settings. We wanted to emphasize the ST part in D/ST.

Sorry I forgot to get around to this.
Want to swap #2 and #170 (15th round) for #7 and #90 (8th round)?

The 15th rounder is just thrown in since the number of picks have to be even - everyone needs 15 picks. Basically an extra 8th round to move down where you’re more comfortable anyway.

Ugh. I didn’t realize the 4th preseason games would be on the same day as our draft. Oh well, no big deal, I’ll just watch it while I draft.

Then my friend just shoots me an e-mail saying he got 2 free tickets to the game. I know the 4th preseason game is scrub central, but I love going to football games.

Then again, I’m serious about some fantasy football.

WHAT TO DOOOOOOOOO

Btw, Ellis Dee and I swapped some picks. I get the #2 overall and his 9th round pick (#98) and he gets my #7 overall and 6th round pick (#66)

I don’t even know who to grab with this pick - I wasn’t planning on getting any of the elite RB prospects in any league this year and haven’t researched CJ vs ADP vs MJD vs RR.

Alright, so I blew off free tickets because I want to crush you all so badly.

Well, and because I was told so late that we wouldn’t get any tailgating time in, which for preseason game 4 would probably be the most fun part.

Versus the Bears too. If it was game 3 I’d go, for game 4, no thanks unless there’s a hell of a tailgate planned.

Draft is open now. Hop on.

Draft Analysis: No Use for a Name

I had the sixth overall pick in this years draft. The sixth pick is probably the worst pick to have, having to decide between a a middling 1st round back or a stud receiver. I did change my strategy this year and got a top-five QB, which is something I never do. We will see how it works.
1. (6) Michael Turner RB

I was really hoping that Gore would have dropped to here. I think Turner will have a better season then last, but not as good as his '08 season. The talk is he’ll be more involved in the passing game, so that is a positive.

2. (19) DeAngelo Williams RB

In this league I would normally go WR here, but with Megatron going the pick before, I decided to go RB-RB. Marshall was still there, but I have questions about the Miami offense and their run-first attitude. The problem is DeAngelo Williams scares the hell out of me. He is like picking heads on a coin-flip.

3. (30) Tom Brady QB

As I said this year I went with a top-five QB (something I have never done). We will see how it pays off. With NE not having any running game to speak of Bradys passing numbers could be huge.

4. (43) Vernon Davis TE

I little early to take Davis here but, if he duplicates his '09 season I’ll be more then happy.

5. (54) Jeremy Maclin WR
6. (67) Pierre Garcon WR
7. (78) Malcom Floyd WR
8. (91) Devin Aromashodu WR

I’ll group all these WR together as one analysis. This group has very young, but capable hands. Each one of these guys could emerge as their teams new number 1 WR (especially Floyd). The problem is I have no stud WR this year and that kinda bothers me. I was hoping Crabtree fell to my 5th pick, but Chitwood snagged him two picks before.

9. (102) Justin Forsett RB

I don’t know exactly what I was thinking here.

10. (115) Minnesota DEF

11. (126) Darren McFadden RB

With Bush hurt I took a flyer on McFadden, but he hasn’t exactly lit it up in the pre-season.

12. (139) Julian Edelman WR

If Welker can’t rebound could be NE new “run game”.

13. (150) Sam Bradford QB

I went with the Detroit match-up with Brady’s week 5 bye. Bradford has looked real good in the preseason, the problem being he hasn’t got any WR’s to throw to.

14. (163) Miami DEF

15. (174) Rian Lindell K

Now that all the drafts are over I’ll try to write some reviews. At least a self review, but I’ll see if I can find time to do reviews of other players. I probably won’t have much time until I get home in two weeks though, and by then people won’t be so big on draft reviews.

If anyone else wants to write reviews, I really appreciate reading them. Omni does very good reviews (example), but I know he has a workload already writing the keeper league reviews. Anything anyone wants to post is good, the post draft analysis/discussion is one of my favorite parts of FF, and I love going back at the end of the year to see how the predictions pan out. Self-reviews are good too.

1. (5) Frank Gore (SF - RB)
I figured the Big 4 would go, well, 1-4. I was thrilled to pick at #5. Not only do I think that Gore is going be great this year, but I’m a Niner homer. Westbrook isn’t much of a threat, even on 3rd down, since Gore is a great pass-catcher as well, plus he gets goal line carries. This is one of the years where it looks like picking at the top half of the 1st is much more predictable than the back half of the 1st.

2. (20) Brandon Marshall (Mia - WR)

PPR monster and clear #1 on his team. Hopefully Henne will realize that his best option is to throw it to Marshall over and over. My choices at this spot were essentially Marshall, White, Jennings, and Fitz. I was torn on White and Jennings - I think they’ll both have huge years. The Cardinals QB situation was still in flux when we drafted so I downgraded Fitz a bit.

3. (29) Anquan Boldin (Bal - WR)

Another guy I’ve become a bit more bullish on. Flacco has shown some real spark and I figure the Ravens didn’t add Boldin and Stallworth (and subsequently Housh) so that they could run the ball even more than they did last year.

4. (44) LeSean McCoy (Phi - RB)

Westbrook v.2.0 or a 3.0 ypc bust? Decent upside because of the system he plays in but I haven’t been terribly impressed with the skills.

5. (53) Jermichael Finley (GB - TE)

I normally don’t reach for a TE but everything I hear about this guy is that he’s a monster. Plus he’s got Rodgers throwing him the ball in a wide open offense. Potentially huge this year.

6. (68) Joe Flacco (Bal - QB)

I prefer to pick a couple of middle of the road, Tier 3, QBs and generally don’t like going QB earlier than the 8th or so but you guys seemed a bit more enthusiastic about the position so I grabbed him. I think Chitwood still had to draft QB and I didn’t want to misjudge and get stuck at the back end of everyone’s back-up QB run. I ended up with the Flacco-Boldin combo which wasn’t intentional, we’ll see how it works. Let me tell you all how thrilled I am that Revis just signed and will be playing in Week 1. Welcome to Revis Island Mr. Boldin.

7. (77) Mike Wallace (Pit - WR)

Probably won’t have much value until Week 6 when Big Ben gets back but potentially huge. Holmes is gone and Hines keeps getting older.

8. (92) Marion Barber (Dal - RB)
9. (101) Jacoby Jones (Hou - WR)
10. (116) Tim Hightower (Ari - RB)

Options, backups, and matchups.

11. (125) Brian Westbrook (SF - RB)

Handcuff for Gore.

12. (140) Matt Cassel (KC - QB)

Potential spot starter, like in the 1st week when Flacco goes against the Jets and Cassel faces the vastly over-rated Charger defense.

13. (149) Dallas (Dal - DEF)

Next one available.

14. (164) Kareem Huggins (TB - RB)

C. Williams back-up and the clear #2 since they cut Derrick Ward. He’s looked good in preseason but you what that’ll buy you. Deep sleeper but potentially the starter by mid-season considering that the Cadillac is running on duct tape and WD-40.

15. (173) Sebastian Janikowski (Oak - K)

Just because I had to. We knows he’s got leg but can the Raiders move the ball enough to even get him in range for a try?

Self-review:

  1. (2) Adrian Peterson (Min - RB)

I traded up into the 2nd pick from the 7th pick. I wasn’t too happy with the 7th pick - I wasn’t sure if Andre Johnson with his injury history was worth the #7 overall, and the best I could hope for there was Gore. I think Turner is due to a much better year than last year (but not as good as 2008) so I wouldn’t have hated him there. Turns out neither would’ve been available and I’d have been forced into a tough choice between Andre Johnson or reaching for Rodgers or getting one of the unproven young RBs. Glad I was able to just secure who I think has a shot at being the #1 RB this year, with Chester Taylor gone, and the potential problems with Favre and Rice making the Vikings need more emphasis on the running game.

  1. (18) Calvin Johnson (Det - WR)

I’m high on him and there’s no reason he shouldn’t finish top 5 WR this year. He’s healthy and his supporting cast has improved - Stafford will have some confidence, Best is going to take some safety attention, and Burleson and Shefter are better than last year’s secondary receivers so they can’t quite focus on CJ as much.

  1. (31) Matt Schaub (Hou - QB)

This was a reach. I was hoping for Tom Brady who ended up getting snatched up 1 pick before. With him, I think I’d have had the best QB1/RB1/WR1 combo in the league. I still may. I’m not as high on Schaub since I think his numbers will fall off a bit this year, but he’ll still be top 7 at worst barring injury. If Romo and Schaub would’ve still been here, I’d have waited a round and took whoever fell, but Schaub represents the last QB before a big dropoff (I think Rivers will be good but not elite this year), and so I ended up reaching here because I really wanted a top tier QB. It wasn’t a huge loss because I wasn’t wildly enthusiastic about the guys that went after him. I was more confident in my ability to mine RB/WR gold later than QB gold.

  1. (42) Dwayne Bowe (KC - WR)

I’m high on Bowe this year. Camp reports are that he came in with his head screwed on straight - in great shape, attended Fitzgerald’s offseason camp, etc. He’s got tons of raw talent and I think Weis will kickstart that passing offense. Besides Arian Foster, I think this will end up looking like the best pick of the 4th round.

  1. (55) Ronnie Brown (Mia - RB)

I like Brown this year. Contract year. Miami’s passing game will improve, which is always a double edged sword - it may mean fewer carries to go around, but it may also lead to a per-play improvement because of the multidimensional threat. His knees should be better by now. Happy to have him in round 5, although it was a tough choice with the next pick being Forte. I would’ve probably snatched up Forte if he fell to the next round. Forte may end up outperforming him this year.

  1. (79) Johnny Knox (Chi - WR) - I changed this to pick 7. Even though it’s listed as my 6th pick, since I gave my 6th rounder to Ellis Dee.

The situaton in chicago is ambiguous but I like Knox to arise as the most productive receiver there. Martz loves guys like him. I’m not getting him at sleeper prices here though, so not outstanding value.

  1. (90) Jerome Harrison (Cle - RB)

Jerome Harrison is going to have 3700 combined yards and 31 touchdowns. Outstanding value in round 9. I had just found out a bit earlier (during the draft) that Hardesty was out, but it wasn’t clear he was going to be on IR at that point. That just made me more determined to grab Harrison.
9. (98) Thomas Jones (KC - RB)

This is actually a pick I wasn’t too enthusiastic about. I let my clock run down to nothing and more or less selected him by default. I do think he’ll be somewhat productive this year with lots of TDs - enough to scare me away from Jamal Charles - but I don’t know when I’d ever start him and his upside isn’t massive. I should’ve taken Justin Forsett here maybe.
9. (103) Zach Miller (Oak - TE) - Picked up an extra 9th rounder from the Ellis Dee swap

I’d have liked to get Finley or Celek, but I’m high on Miller. He’s very talented, managing 800 rec yards with some terrible QBs. So a half-competant Jason Campbell who loves to throw to TEs could potentially turn Miller into a top 5.

  1. (114) Pittsburgh (Pit - DEF)

Eh. I hate the inbreds, but Polamalu is back, and they look good when he is. They’ll need more to rely on defense and low scoring games too until rapistberger is back in rhythm.

  1. (127) Steve Slaton (Hou - RB)

Lottery pick. He may manage to play himself back into an important role, he’s got talent, and he’s on an explosive offense.

  1. (138) Dexter McCluster (KC - WR,RB)

At best, maybe he can be another Percy Harvin utility player. Some rush yards, some rec yards, return yards.

  1. (151) Legedu Naanee (SD - WR)

If Jackson never plays in SD again, Naanee is going to be a starter in a prolific passing offense.

  1. (162) David Akers (Phi - K)

Thought I’d beat the last round kicker rush by taking one early. He’s top 10 usually.

  1. (175) Anthony Gonzalez (Ind - WR)

Not sure how much of a role he’s going to play, but it’s not like Garcon or Collie are outstanding players - people look good with Manning throwing to them. If Gonzo takes one of their spots, that’s some pretty great production out of round 15.

Overall I’m pretty happy with my team. Wish I’d have snagged a better QB after reaching for one that high, but Schaub has a good shot at top 5 this year, which wouldn’t make it a reach.
