SDMB All-Pro Fantasy Football League

I can not possibly explain how disastrous this Colts/Saints game was for me, personally. I almost believe I’m cursed, because no one in their right mind could have predicted that outcome… except me, because only that outcome causes me to get as screwed as I now am. I mandate that from this point forward that the name Murphy in Murphy’s Law be changed to Jules’ Law.

Yes I did bet the Colts to win, yes I did bet the over. The over/under? 53.5 pts. The total of the game? 51pts. The difference? A missed field goal by Olindo Mare. My kicker? Olindo Mare. One of the worst QB performances in history? Yep, by Drew Brees. My QB? Drew Brees.

No one predicted the Colts would have as staunch and stalwart a defense as that. I certainly didn’t, especially since I bet my entire week on Saints players blowing up against that once porous Colts defense. Now I’m pretty much done for week one, and I can only pray this isn’t an omen of how this season will go for me. I’m sick.

That is a series of coincidental suckages sir.

Addai went down on the first play and I thought I wouldn’t even have to wait until the Browns played for my first big dissapointment of the season, but it ended up working out. He actually scored under his projected total even though he was having his way with them.

I’m really liking him this year. I wish I’d have taken him in my auction league too, but it sucks if you have an injured or dissapointing star player shared in two leagues.

You can see why my “draft the Colts offense” strategy of last year worked pretty well.

Yeah, that’s true. But year after year, example after example, it starts to get spooky. I wouldn’t be so unnerved if it didn’t happen to be my kicker that cost me the bet and my QB that inexplicably sucked that cost (likely) me this week’s matchup

I’m really glad my TE play worked out well, I was very nervous about that, but I wish now I had not started Henderson over Evans, even against Denver. Hindsight and all that.

To be fair, Drew Brees isn’t a bastion of consistency. He had some mysterious suck games late last year. The one against Washington helped me in the playoffs.

Indy’s back 7 were surprisingly good in pass coverage, though. They’ve started with half a season of undefeated games 2 years in a row now IIRC with a worse looking defense. They might dominate this year.

He seems pretty consistent to me, noting last season. He had a bad game or two at the beginning and end of the season, but put up a stretch of games from week 4-14 that were really, really good. I guess I shoulda known Brees was going to have a terrible game from that? I don’t think anyone in America sits Brees in that spot though, so I don’t feel too bad… er, yeah I do.

No, I didn’t mean you should’ve expected it, and you did make the right choice, I just meant that it’s not without precedent for him to have a bad game.

And the one-two punch of Reggie Wayne and Adam Vinatieri gives me almost 38 points right out of the gate. Who needs LaDanian Tomlinson?

Even though facing off Marvin Harrison versus Peyton Manning, I got lucky when the Colts defense shut down McAllister. Would have preferred another TD to Harrison instead of Wayne, but what can you do?

I don’t have much in the way of roster debates this week, except whether to start Young at Jacksonville or Kitna at Detroit.

Both options suck.

Jacksonville has the athleticism on the D-line to contain Vince Young, and they’ve owned him in the past.

Pass D is the only thing that Oakland can do. Part of that is just that their run defense sucked so much that teams didn’t need to pass on them, but part is also that they have some pretty good defenders in the passing game.

Detroit is probably going to come out passing, so that negates the former problem, but still… hmm…

Think I’ll go with Kitna.

I get the feeling the Oakland defense got a huge bump up in the passing game because the team was so terrible that their opponents stopped passing after the second quarter. It’s easy to lead the league in passing yards allowed when you also lead the league in fewest passing attempts against you. I haven’t heard anyone else mention that but I think it’s really important. Why doesn’t anyone else notice this?

I was accounting for that but I didn’t elaborate on it. It was part of what I meant by saying that teams could easily run on them so they didn’t need to pass - part of that is that they were often running with a lead.

Bad run defenses and teams with bad offenses often have inflated pass defense stats for that reason.

Still, Oakland does have some talent on pass defense, so it wasn’t strictly due to that. I’m going to go with Kitna though. I’m counting on Martz to have some crazy passing game plan for opening day.

Is live scoring working for everyone?

Are they doing it for free for everyone this year, or is it a free trial for everyone, or what?

To the three of you who voted against me in my matchup this week:

That large number you see next to my name is my score. Don’t doubt the strength of my lineup again.

First week can be pretty unpredictable.

Fortunately my only real decision to make was between Kitna and Young, and I went with Kitna, who had a surprisingly good game.

I’d have been better off starting Tatum Bell over Ronnie Brown actually, but I don’t think many people would’ve done that. 16 points. He’s up for trade, by the way.

A few matchups will come down to the Monday Night games. No use for a name is 1.05 points behind Isotopes with Vernon Davis to play, and he should win it pretty easily. I have Fitz, Housh, and 19.54 points Ellis Dee’s Heap, McGahee, and Rackers. I like my odds, but receivers can be pretty inconsistent so this is very much still a match. Court Jesters has an outside shot at winning if Leinart pulls a Manning, unlikely but possible. I’d certainly be happy about that, having both of Arizona’s starting receivers, one in each of my leagues. Despite Quentin Jammer’s bad start, he’s a 44.87 point lead with Chitwood having Alex Smith and Edgerrin James to play. Quite unlikely that they’ll be able to close the gap, but possible - that game might be a shootout.

Notable bench stars:

T Bell 16 points - Me
Minnesota, 32 points - Taz
Indianpolis 23 points - Frosted Lightning
Lamont Jordan 26 points - Court Jesters
E Manning (ha!) 30 points, C Brown 30 points, J Witten 20 points - Gridbirds
B Roethlisburger 23 points, C Portis 15 points, Calvin Johnson 14.4 - Chitwood
J Delhomme 24, M Lynch 16 - Concussions
R Curry 23 points - Quentin’s Jammers

The Opposites is the surprise of the week - most points so far without much of any help from RBs (13.25 of 129.15 points with Stover still to play) - I suspect your team will be sometimes dominating but very inconsistent.

SenorBeef with another top notch post!

To further establish how horrendous my week one was, on my entire roster, only Ronald Curry scored a single touchdown. RONALD CURRY! That’s right. My entire starting team was held without a touchdown. Somehow, I’m actually winning my game going into Monday Night. That should tell you how bad Chitwood’s Sunday was. But with James and Smith going for Chitwood (and against bad defenses), I don’t feel confident. I don’t deserve to win this week anyway.

The Eagles completely ruined my Sunday. If you happened to have had the misfortune of watching that game, they completely, utterly, crapped that game away to an inferior team playing worse than the Eagles were. Not only did my team lose a game they should have won (though rightfully, it’s hard to have played worse than the Eagles did), they single-handedly cost me both my parley bets. The lesson, as always, never bet on your favorite team, ever.

I think it amusing that Randle-el would be on the notable bench performances had SenorBeef not dropped him. Who saw that coming?

Good showing by the Gridbirds, but brianjedi, don’t get too cocky now. You got a TD pass from Tomlinson, Moss’s best game in 4 years, and an inexplicable huge score from a rookie on his first pro game (helped by a chance injury to the player above him) behind your score. It’s always a bad idea to risk bad karma that way. But bragging is part of fantasy football I guess, and I have very, very little to do. I stand before you all a humbled man. My team floundered, my picks were erratic and terrible, and my favorite team lost another close game to a team they outplayed.

Luckily for me, my team absolutely can not play worse than they did this week.

Played Lamont Jordan as my #3 in another league, so I was happy there (unfortunately, my QB is Vince Young and my TE caught only one pass for 10 yards, so it was an wash). Larry Johnson and KC were useless, also eliminating me from Survivor.

All I can say is - there’s always the waiver wire and next week.

Vince Young sure does get the rushing TDs, doesn’t he? Even this week against a team that owns him he scored one. 7 last year.

I figured he had a shot at making 8-10 rushing touhdowns this year, which in our scoring system would be worth 12-15 passing touchdowns, which is a big part of the reason I drafted him.

Of course I made the right choice not to play him this week - Kitna had a very nice day. I’m going to have some trouble figuring out who to start in the future.

By the way, the waiver claims are open now. If you have any questions about them, feel free to ask. Otherwise e-mail me with your claims.

Frosted Lightning, I reverted your free agent pickups because those players are currently on waivers as described here. Normally you’d want to e-mail me (you can use the “e-mail league” feature on yahoo) and tell me your waiver claims, but since you added them as free agents I reverted the transactions and will note those players as waiver requests unless you don’t want that. If no one with a higher waiver priority than you claims those players, I’ll announce you as the winner at around 11-12 EST Tuesday night and then you will be free to add them as free agents.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

They’ve technically been open since Thursday night.

Kiros, I assume you’re not intending to use a waiver claim on a kicker. We’re still in the waiver wire period until Tonight at 11-12, as I said a few posts ago. Free agency doesn’t open until midnight.

So I’m going to revert the pickup until then.

The manual roster editing feature on yahoo is annoying - you get a dropdown with a giant, unorganized list of all players. I don’t understand why they don’t just use the same interface as they have for manual draft - much, much smoother.
