Cool. Hope this works out. 18 would be better than 16, IMO.
Agreed.
Got the link and signed up. Eschrodinger’s cats.
Okay, good, eschrodinger is in, and I’m just waiting on Hamlet to accept his invite, then we’ll be at 18 and ready to go.
Done. Now to go turn my rankings into auction values. See you tonight.
Alright, I’ll try this again. If anyone is interested, we could do a live voice chat during the draft tonight over discord. It’s really easy to set up and doesn’t require installing anything, you can run it from a web browser.
You can use This link and join the general voice chat channel in the bottom left. I think you have to give your browser permission to use your microphone.
Anyway, I know not everyone will come, but even if a few come it’ll be fun to actually talk rather than type during the draft, although that’s fun too.
Draft is in just over an hour. I’ll be on discord around 5 to help anyone who might be having trouble with it.
I usually go Stars and Scrubs, but I think this is the biggest gap for me between starters and my bench yet. Interesting to see how it will play out this year with extra players on the waiver.
Self review:
Patrick Mahomes $19
Case Keenum $5
I overpaid for Mahomes a few bucks. Kind of a metagame concern. I wanted a piece of him this year in some league so I could follow along with him and I failed to get him in my other leagues so I may have overpaid a few bucks to get him in this one. Plus unlimited upside - I figure in a league like this with 18 people it’s good to have a lot of upside, you’re going to need things to go your way on the way to the championship and drafting upside gives you that chance for everything to come together. Keenum for $5 was because I anticipated every QB would be drafted (they were) and I thought because they’d all be valuable that $5 would probably be the floor of their pricing, so I might as well grab a guy for what I felt was the cheapest price that would be available. Ended up being wrong, with a few backup QBs going cheaper.
RB
Gurley $69
Aaron Jones $12
Doug Martin $3
Nymheim Hines $1
I actually won the first nomination for Gurley. I almost never go for top tier players, but I felt like people weren’t making the adjustment enough to the big league format, and were underpaying for top stars. So I figured the best thing to do in that situaton would be to get the top guy in the draft. It ended up that I set the market by doing that, and all the subsequent great RBs came at nearly the same price, but not over like they probably should’ve. So it just looks in line with the rest of the values rather than a steal. In general, the top picks in this league were a steal relative to what you’d expect with 18 people.
Aaron Jones seems like a good bet to me - two game suspension. GB coaches are talking up Jamal Williams, but Jones was simply better when given the chance. I’m hoping performance wins out, and $12 will be a really good price. Doug Martin for $3 came early on, but there comes a point where you’ve got to fill your team with part time players or backups and hope they become productive for a few bucks. Hines is a great $1 end of roster bid - there’s a wide open RB situation in Indy, and he’s likely the third down back regardless of how that goes, so there’s a flex worthy bit of production to be had there.
WR
JOSH GORDON $30
Kelvin Benjamin $12
Mike Williams $5
Kenny Golladay $6
Ted Ginn Jr $4
JOSH GORDON was nominated third specifically to sucker me in to overpaying for him but I feel like I got a very fair price for him, maybe a little on the cheap side. I like him more than most of the guys who went between $30 and $45. You don’t really need me to talk him up, do you?
I don’t like Kelvin Benjamin, but when I bid on him the pickings were getting slim. Someone literally has to catch the ball in Buffalo, and I figure as the only target he’s got a floor of at least like 700/4, which is useful enough in this league. I’m rather happy with Mike Williams and Kenny Golladay as my cheap upside WRs. Williams was a first round draft pick (I think) and just got injured - no reason he can’t be productive this year. And people like Golladay to become #2 in a prolific Lions attack. Ted Ginn is a decent buy for $4, he puts up flex-worthy numbers in NO.
TE
Zack Ertz $24, Cameron Brate $1
I like Ertz at 24 compared to Gronk at 35 and Kelce at 36. I did have a few sleepers I really like at TE this year so I could’ve cheaped out on this position, but I felt like the value was there so I bid. I actually didn’t intend to have Cameron Brate - it was my nom, and I wasn’t sure who to nominate, and I just clicked brate being near the top of the list figuring someone would outbid me. Then no one did. I’m fine with him as a backup for $1 though.
K/DST
Jacksonville $7
Daniel Carlson $2
Carlson is a dome kicker, 2 bucks. Pretty standard.
I feel like Jacksonville was worth paying a couple extra bucks beyond what other defenses were going for because it’s the only one you can really safely project to be good this year. It’s hard to stream defenses in this league simply because the unowned ones tend to be bottom 5 defenses, so there’s a lot of value in just having an every week starter that you can plug in and forget.
Overall, I think I’ve got a playoff team if Mahomes puts up some fantasy points in his first year of starting. Pretty well balanced roster with no huge glaring weaknesses other than RB depth - first two weeks will be rough for me as Josh Gordon is eased back into the starting lineup and Aaron Jones is suspended, but I should be good every week after that barring a lot of injuries, or Jones not becoming a useful asset could potentially sink my team.
Well, I’ll post mine, because I almost have the identical team to Beef (Overpay for a QB, take a top RB, fight for scraps for WR2 and 3)
- (2) Le’Veon Bell (Pit - RB) $59
Oh boy am I worried about Bell. I wasn’t able to get Connor, if he comes back after game 1 I feel like I have a bargain, but if he’s out for too long I’m sunk. I remember previous years the first stud went for a reasonable price and the second and third went over, so after beef got Gurley I figured I wouldn’t get Bell, but I think other people may have discounted him due to uncertainty more than I did
- (10) Matthew Stafford (Det - QB) $20
A definite overpay. Previous years, I’d be ecstatic getting a Rivers/Ryan/Stafford tier player for $20, but I think going from 20 to 18 discounted QBs the most. Or I am misremembering
- (29) Demaryius Thomas (Den - WR) $31
My only real WR, I’m ok with this value, though I maybe should have waited and got a
worse $20 guy and had more than $7 for other WRs
- (32) Marshawn Lynch (Oak - RB) $20
Not my favorite guy, of the ~$20 RBs, I like about half more than Lynch, half less.
- (41) Bilal Powell (NYJ - RB) $12
I hope I don’t have to play him much, but a playable guy who isn’t likely to lose his job for $12 is nice
- (51) Evan Engram (NYG - TE) $17
I think TE is one of the other big discounts from 20 -> 18. I got a discount here, but given my WR troubles, I should have taken a cheaper guy.
- (58) Rex Burkhead (NE - RB) $20
Not quite my favorite ~$20 RB, but if $15 Ingram didn’t happen (steal of the draft, maybe) he would be.
- (102) Derek Carr (Oak - QB) $5
Did not expect there to be cheaper backup QBs other than Peterman type guys, don’t mind that there were slightly cheaper options. I expect a bounceback from last year
- (138) New Orleans (NO - DEF) $3
Good starting schedule, don’t want to stream in this league
- (175) Josh Doctson (Was - WR) $5
I’d much rather have him on my bench than a starter. I like him as a sleeper, but he might not wake up. I maybe should have bid that fifth dollar on Ginn.
- (195) Danny Amendola (Mia - WR) $2
Savior of the draft for me. I’m really glad Beef didn’t convince Hamlet to steal him from me. I needed a WR3, and I think Stills is probably the WR to own in Miami, but Amendola has a good shot at volume. Health is a concern.
- (218) Ty Montgomery (GB - RB) $3
I was ready to go at this point, I’m glad I got a real person for this money.
- (249) Ryan Succop (Ten - K) $1
- (257) Jake Butt (Den - TE) $1
- (264) Seattle (Sea - DEF) $1
Overview: If Bell comes back, Bell, Burkhead and Lynch are a really strong RB core. That, along with a better than average TE and an average QB hopefully cover for a weak WR core. If Bell doesn’t come back, I’ll have to hope to hit some waiver wire gems.
from last year’s thread:
Because I need every waiver penny I can get:o
Woops, sorry, forgot about that. I’ll add in the extra waiver bucks.
$100 for Phillip Lindsay? And I thought I was overbidding at $16.
I’m posting this here to remind myself from next year: Let’s eliminate kickers to reduce the draft time. Everyone has to get a kicker and it takes 30-40 seconds each time, and they’re kinda random for fantasy purposes anyway. I think this would be a good league to pioneer going kickerless.
Shit. I decided to start Gordon even though he was questionable coming into the late game because I thought the Pats would show him off and force him a TD. Now he’s not starting. I went from an almost guaranteed win to a 50/50 shot. Either of the guys I’d play instead of Gordon put up 22 and 11.
Well, you won anyway! My bench decisions have evened out so far this season.
In Week 1, I benched T.J. Yeldon in favor of Allen Hurns. That cost me 12 points, and I lost the game by 8. This week, I benched Yeldon in favor of Chris Godwin. That earned me 1.9 extra points, and I won my matchup by 1.75.
Need a little clarification - the guy who runs Alex’s Team, is that someone’s off-board friend? I’m not sure I confirmed their identity for reference.
Here are some rankings showing actual points you scored, potential points you could have scored if you started only the highest scorers on your team, and the percentage of actual / potential.
Potential is a measure of how well you assemble your team through the draft, trades, and waivers. Coach is a measure of how well you choose your starters. Actual is the combination of the two.
This is just the Week 1 stats. Week 2 to follow shortly, and then Week 3 either tonight or tomorrow. New weeks will be posted on Wednesdays to give yahoo time to make stat corrections.

Unsurprisingly, this league has higher coaching grades than the other leagues. If anyone would like their alias changed to something else, let me know. In order to keep the tables readable on a phone, I’d prefer to keep the names to 7 or 8 characters max.
The green and red numbers show your change in ranking for that table compared to the previous week. If you were 5th last week, and are 3rd this week, you would see a +2.
Note that Week 1 stats don’t show season totals because there’s no point, but the season 1 stats do exist; they’re the same as your week 1 stats.

Thanks Ellis for the stats, it’s always interesting to see that kind of stuff.
I feel good about my team this year, I feel like I’ve got a deep playoff run going. The few bucks extra I paid for Mahomes is paying off and my cheapie roster filler WR guys are actually pretty good - Mike Williams had a huge game last week, Kenny Golladay is looking very good, and Josh Gordon will be back this week. And I’ve got Aaron Jones who should take over the Green Bay spot at some point.
This week is tough - I’m up against team anonymous/motu who has been the #1 team so far. Should be a pretty great game.
Correct, Alex is not on the SDMB
My studs/duds monstrosity will collapse any week now
