The long-running (since 2001, I think) SDMB Big League Yahoo Fantasy Baseball league is back again. I renewed the league a while ago and sent invites to all of last year’s managers; this year Yahoo’s renew feature automatically renews all of last year’s teams, so there are currently 15 teams with the cap set at 20. Draft is set for Sunday, 3/26, at 9:00 pm EDT – it’s a live draft with autodraft if a manager is not online for it (i.e., if no selection is made during a 30 second window). However, because I haven’t done much to nag/notify managers, I’m open to moving the draft back.
There are several threads here from past years about the league including draft recaps, etc. Basics are this is a non-keeper rotisserie-style fantasy league, with a couple of twists. One is the format – rather than the traditional 5 x 5 (5 offensive categories and 5 pitching categories), we use a 6 x 6: OPS and SLG replace BA as offensive categories, and Holds are included as a pitching category. The other is depth – total number of teams/managers has varied from 13 to 19 year to year, with 15-17 being the most common total. With 24 roster slots + 2 DL slots for a total of 26 players per team, and 15-17 teams, there’s not a lot of value out there on the waiver wire at any given time, and it can be a challenge to come up with a trade that helps your team without giving up something critical to get it. You either have to draft really well or be aggressive about finding and dumping players who can help upgrade a position.

I’ll see if anyone else chimes in – I know there’ve been a few folks on the west coast, so doing it much earlier could be a challenge since 9 pm EDT is 6 pm for them.
I’d also hope for even an hour earlier if possible, being a Sunday. 9 is bad enough later in the week but it’s brutal to start the week off with no sleep. That said it’s been set as that for a while and I’ll make it either way. shrugs
Sorry to lose The Gift Baskets (Wilson) and not to get more folks on board, but given that the feedback I’ve received has been (with that one exception) in favor of staying with tonight for the draft, I’m gonna make the call to keep it where it is. For one thing, I hate changing to an earlier time with only 8 hours to go – wouldn’t want someone to miss the update and miss the critical start of the draft. For another, I have a commitment late afternoon myself and may not be done until 6 pm or later, so I would be scrambling to make an earlier time.
I truly apologize for not having done more to communicate about this and find a time that works for everyone before now – it’s just been a really hectic couple of months and the time got away from me.
If there are any people considering joining at the last minute, but not sure if this is their bag:
This is one of the first leagues I ever joined. I did a bunch of research beforehand, and committed to staying relatively active. I ended up winning the league. But it does require at least a minimum amount of effort during the season, and a commitment to stick through the draft tonight.
Congrats to The Illest for winning this year. The league was quite competitive among the top 3 teams, I remained mired in 5th place for most of the season, slipping to 6th as I had maxed out my pitching too early in the season.
I spent a good portion of July in 1st place, then something happened. You guys ran away with it, and there wasn’t anything I could do (except maybe pay more attention!). Great season - very well done.
Congrats!
I had a decent run in first place, but I was never under any illusion that it would last once Stanton stopped hitting a HR in every. single. game. Third is about where I deserved to fall this year.
Let’s make sure we get 4-6 teams worth of new blood in next spring!
Indeed. Congrats. I thought as late as a week from the end I might have a chance to finally win it, but I did have my best finish so far – I finished 2nd in 2011 also, but farther back in terms of points. It was definitely interesting to watch the shuffling for position among the top teams so late into the year. Do hope everyone’s back next time and we get a few more new teams (or maybe the return of some folks who’ve dropped along the way).
I’ll create a new thread with announcement/info but wanted to make sure everyone on this thread got the word. If you were in last year and know you definitely won’t be this year, let me know so I can remove you before I renew.
