I used to think liberals were tolerant of other opinions. When I joined my first internet forum I thought that only right wing posters were vulgar and abusive.
I have been on The Straight Dope for two years. Initially I thought this was a civilized forum where controversial topics could be discussed in a civil manner.
Changing my mind about all that was a disappointing experience. 
Since nobody actually gives a shit whether b84’s asshole nature and inability to understand simple concepts can be blamed on autism, and since he’s evidently in a betting mood with cash to burn, why not something more relevant? Have an impartial third party pick five geneticists and ask them whether his theory is correct, and that hard scientific evidence shows that “blacks” (as he loosely defines them) are overall less intelligent than “whites” (his grouping) and this lower intelligence can be traced to specific patterns in their genes. If a majority say he’s right, he gets the cash; if not, he loses.

Precisely. Believe it or not, there are those who still have a lot to learn on the topics that these racist posters bring up. I certainly learn a lot during the ‘debates’ that I read voraciously in GD. I read those threads and never post for a reason…there are posters in those threads who are taking apart racist arguments like fucking surgeons, and I’m watching and learning. Staying the fuck out of the way and learning a lot of shit that can help me to help my kid to battle ignorance when it comes to her. That is useful.
