SDMB Challenge: Name an Anime without any fanservice

Trigun?

Off the top of my head, I’d say anything out of Studio Ghibli.

I’d have to watch Metropolis again, but I’m pretty sure it didn’t have any.

Hikaru no Go. Heck, there barely are any females!

Pokémon!

What is fanservice?

A: Naked or underclothed females, preferably jiggling heavily.

B: Exploded diagrams or closeups of transformations of mecha or other devices.

Stark Raven Mad: Nope. I believe Jess from Team Rocket appeared in a bikini. And I call that fan service.

Grave of the Fireflies.

Best anime I’ve ever seen, I never wanna see it again! :frowning:

My wife, the anime guru, says: Fruits Basket.

She says there are many, many more, and she will write me out a list to post here, if you’re interested.

Bleach? Well, there’s this one female character with rather large breasts, but she’s always fully clothed. And the characters use swords and spiritual power to fight each other, not mecha. Does that count?

Since when do mecha count as “fan service”?

I’m only familiar with the titular (heh) use of the term…

Google for “Transformers Hentai”.

I swear by the Matrix Of Leadership, you cannot name something that somebody, somewhere doesn’t wan’t to sleep with. :smack:

Since always. I’ve just been a fan since the late 80s. Sometimes, terms get simplified in use.

Witch Hunter Robin?

Card Captor Sakura?

Eh, that stuff I’m already aware of. I’m still trying to zap those sections of my PRAM…

Still don’t see why “Exploded diagrams or closeups of transformations of mecha or other devices” qualify as fan-service, though.

Here’s a list of non-fanservice anime that my wife compiled, in addition to the one I mentioned:

Ultra Maniac
X/1999
Descendants Of Darkness
Ruroni Kenshin
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Hikaru No Go
Prince Of Tennis
Card Captor Sakura
Clamp Campus Detectives
Boys Over Flowers
His And Her Circumstances
Here Is Greenwood
Marmalade Boy
Magic Knight Rayearth

Hope that helps.

Fullmetal Alchemist

Dude, anything that makes people drool is fanservice. The fans want to see the big transformation sequence at least as much as they want to see bouncing breasteses.

Think of that long sequence where the SDF-1 fires the main cannon. Fan service.
The loving closeups on the Veritech transformations.
When Vash’s hand detaches and you see the trigger pop down and his finger pulls the trigger and the gun fires.

The transformation sequences in Magic Knight Rayearth, especially, IIRC, the one with the glasses who took forever to get her weapon… and then the Magic Knight summonings.

:smack: Thought of a few:
Shaman King
Zatch Bell
Not sure about Yu-Gi-Oh, it has at least two really cute girls.

I’ve noticed this quite a bit in anime. In Evangelion it seems like it takes twice as long for them to get ready to fight as it actually takes them ot fight. I always figured it was for dramatic tension, but your explanation makes sense too.
