Here’s your chance to voice your opinion and show your college football smarts by ranking the 10 best Bowl Division (1-A) teams. Collectively the SDMB must be smarter than any other pundits out there. Or at least as dumb.
We’ll keep this thread going each weekend and close it Tuesday night 10ET. I’ll post the results then.
My vote for Week 7 (Oct 15)
LSU
Oklahoma
Alabama
Wisconsin
Stanford
Oklahoma State
Oregon
Boise State
Clemson
Arkansas
I’m not really happy with Arkansas there, but I really couldn’t find anyone else I wanted to put there either. So what are your Top 10?
It is an old argument, but I really wish Boise played more solid competition. They are good, but as it is it is really hard to say how good. Thumping Toledo, Tulsa, Nevada, Fresno State, and Colorado State would be a forgone conclusion for any top 10 team. So all we have to grade them on is the Georgia game.
** The Badgers have the exact same problem. They’ve only played one good team, ok very good team. But their schedule firms up quite a bit more going forward. They’ll have a chance to prove themselves.
*** Yes I am aware of what an outlier they are on my list. And yes I don’t expect they’ll be here after November (they may have the toughest November schedule of all). But I think they do deserve to be here now. And if they can even go 2-2 in November I may keep them here.
I had a hard time leaving Oregon off the list. They probably would have been 11. But this week was the first where they have really impressed me.
Top 7 are way ahead of 8 and beyond. From 8 on, who knows. Think this is the year the SEC’s streak ends, as I would expect either Oklahoma or Wisconsin to beat LSU or Alabama.
I think there are 2 clear strata of quality at the top. 1-5 are all very good to great teams, and the next 4 look to be a loss waiting to happen (though Boise’s may not be til a BCS game). I watched KSU’s qb play a very good and very tough game against Miami, and maybe he could carry KSU to a 1-loss season, but overall, the Wildcats aren’t very impressive.
Actually, I’d agree with this, with the proviso that the 1 and 2 spot don’t really matter, nor do I really know who fits best there. LSU and Bama are both very, very, very good teams. Fortunately, barring any slacking off next week, we’ll get a chance to see for sure who goes in the top slot. Two evenly matched teams, both with healthy personnel and a bye week before the game - how good is this going to be?
Others receiving votes - Arkansas (3), Houston (3), West Virginia (2), Michigan State (1)
There is clearly a Top 2 (almost tied) with OU a solid 3. A big dropoff to the next 5, with Wisconsin leading that pack. It will be interesting to see if OSU beats OU, if they will leapfrog Wisconsin in our poll.
