SDMB Fantasy Football DYNASTY League: Year 12

I may have hurt my team a tiny bit by moving Drake this season. But bringing Hopkins in gives me the WR3, WR5, and WR6 in consensus dynasty rankings, to go with the RB2 and RB7 I was already starting. I wanted Hopkins’ consistency to balance out the boom and bust nature of Tyreek.

I think that upgrade is worth losing out on Drake’s potential explosion. On the other hand, he’s 26 and a free agent, and his break out last season was fueled by beating up on weaker defenses. I do hate losing Diggs, though. He’s genuinely one of my favorite players.

All in all, I think this is a really even trade that makes a lot of sense for both teams.

Well, it appears CEH is everything he was hyped up to be. It looked to me like a lot of crappy tackling by the Texans, but CEH has great balance and is slippery too.

Because the trade between myself and RNATB was negotiated off Yahoo, it was never actually submitted. So I have adjusted the rosters. @Really_Not_All_That_Bright make sure to adjust your starters to reflect the trade.

I think this is the first time I didn’t have Aaron Rodgers as my opening day starter in the history of the league.

Magnificent Moose Josh Allen with 16 points 13 minutes into the game. A new dynasty has begun.

Is conditional draft pick trading allowed? Like I’ll send my 2021 2nd round for player X but if I make the playoffs it gets bumped up to a first?

Whoops.

I wonder which of my starters will get hurt to complete the miserable Sunday trifecta

Sure, that’s fine, I’ve made a trade with Ellis Dee years ago where it was conditional on our draft position. Just make sure the conditions are totally clear.

Whoops what?

So Josh Allen finished with 312 passing yards, 2 passing TDs, 57 rush yards, 1 rush TD. Pretty great. But despite putting up 30 points, Rodgers would’ve been the better start with 34 points. So Rodgers definitely is not washed up and I’ll probably start him at least a few times this year. If anyone is in win-now mode that needs a QB obviously he’d be up for trade.

Big Ben was my opening day starter for several years and now he’s starting the season against me. I think I’m in okay position; if Daniel Jones chokes it, Steelers DEF will probably score me some points. Sort of a hedge play.

Yahoo likes me so I took a flyer and put Cam Akers in at the last minute, literally, at 8:14pm. I can decide between Jonnu and Slayton tomorrow. It’s extremely rare that I make a last-second coach’s call like that.

Are you sure? I could have swore that I inherited Big Ben when I took over the team many moons ago and I ditched him shortly after drafting Luck…but I could be misremembering.

Several as in three or four. Nowhere near as long as Rodgers for Beef. I’m guessing I got him from you in a trade.

Oh cool, yahoo has history game data. Let’s see how far back it goes…

NY Fanboys Starting QB Week 1 (Projected) Actual
2019 Baker Mayfield, (21.78) 9.75 Big Ben on my bench (19.93) 11.00
2018 Big Ben (18.72) 10.35 <== Ben was my starter all season, won championship
2017 Marcus Mariota (?!) (20.07) 20.90 Big Ben on my bench (19.65) 17.85
2016 Eli Manning (20.05) 18.35 Big Ben on my bench (21.01) 22.30
2015 Big Ben (19.14) 20.55
2014 Big Ben (17.37) 18.55

In 2013 my only quarterbacks were Eli and Geno Smith. (?!) You had Andrew Luck and Big Ben, and then next season Ben was my opening day starter. I kind of half-remember trading you, possibly in season, or maybe you just dropped him and I drafted him? He seems too valuable to just drop, though. (Says the guy who just dropped him last season.)

EDIT: Oh yeah, and it turns out he wasn’t my primary opening day starter, opening the season only half the time for me.

Yeah, I vaguely remember doing a trade when I took Luck. I had Luck, Bortles and Big Ben and at the time I figured Ben was going to be done in 2-3 years max. 2012 and 2013 he was basically being held together with tape and popsicle sticks.

Found it!

So this year’s trade was not my first!

I’m surprised you’ve made so few trades given how long you’ve been in the league. I usually make 2 or 3 a year and Jules and Dale seem like they’re making 8+ a year. I mean, it’s fine if you don’t, but it’s fun to have everyone be active traders in the league. You can always throw around more offers maybe you’ve got an issue with valuations if other people are coming with offers but none ever turn into a deal. I’m not sure if that’s the case, just going by the stereotypes I read on the dynasty ff subreddit. Usually the non-traders are either mostly absent and not putting in much effort into the league, or they like their guys so much that they demand a huge, disproportionate amount of value back so that they clearly win every trade by a large margin (and never end up getting any trades done)

Not trying to pick on you specifically, just since you mentioned only having 2 trades in like 10 years it came to mind. I’d like everyone to be very active. I’ve really admired what Jules and Dale especially have been doing recently. Jules turned over his entire roster since he inherited it from Furt when he joined (and it’s one of the best) and Dale has made massive impacts with reinventing his team in recent years.

Speaking of which I fear our new Dale overlords. He’s projected to score 177 points this week. Which is 100 more, or well more than double, RNATB’s score. (I use that comparison because RNATB has beat up on Dale some years in our division)

It’s a couple things. When I took over this team it was barren from a dynasty standpoint. It feels like I’ve been in a constant state of rebuild.

That means a) I’ve never really had a lot of coveted players with enough tread on the tires to be worth anything. I’ve certainly never been in a situation where I was overloaded at a position and felt like I had a surplus, when my teams have been competitive it’s always on the strength of my starters and I’ve been shallow as a puddle.

And b) draft picks are golden, perhaps unreasonably so. I’ve been constantly scraping and clawing to try and get something even resembling a useful stable of RB for like a decade. I’ve had some bad luck with draft position and few of the picks I’ve made actually become multi-year starters, Tarik Cohen is probably the best RB I’ve ever drafted before CEH. I mean I’ve been holding onto bums like Jordan Wilkins and Christine Michel for 2 years longer than is reasonable just in case something wild happened. Since I’ve been looking under every rock for a RB for so long I’ve sacrificed WRs and TEs with big upside on the waiver wire and in the draft. Plus I had to deal with the whole Luck debacle. All that’s contributed to me rarely having anything worth trading without being left taking zeros some weeks.

About the only trade offers I ever get are for Julio and he’s like my only bright blue-chip player and a guy that I singled out in the draft almost a decade ago. He’s been my team captain and up until Golladay the only guy I plug in on week 1 and stop thinking about it. I’d need like 3 firsts to make that kind of a trade even remotely logical and no one is offering that.

I rarely trade in most of my leagues though, so I’m sure there’s a part of it’s that just psychological. I usually like the guys I draft and if I guess right on a guy on draft day I don’t want to end up losing to him come playoff time.

In my $$$ IRL league last year I had Mahomes and Lamar both in a 1 QB league. I was desperately trying to trade Lamar in week 5 and 6 for a stud RB but no one would bite. Then by the time week 10-12 rolled around people wanted him but at that point I was locked into 1st place and afraid to face Lamar in the playoffs.

I suppose I’m probably a bit too much of an optimist when it comes to my guys…if I have an opportunity to sell high I usually am the idiot convinced that that 3 week surge is going to last all season long, and clearly the guy I’m trading with is trying to dump his undesirables…

Managed to grab the high bid for Ke’Shawn Vaughn, $6 to win over Hamlet’s $3, validating both of our bids. My 3rd round pick I wanted him, figuring I’d pair him with Jones but then they traded for Fournette which threw me. McFarland’s concussion scared me off and by my next choice after that, a Jet was close enough so I just grabbed the homer. But now I get Vaughn as well.

Turns out I should have dropped Mariota going into the draft because I ended up dropping Mariota for Vaughn and spending $6 in FAAB in the process. Live and learn.

EDIT: After cutting down to 4 RBs pre-draft, I’m now up to 7 RBs with three new rookies. Hopefully something sticks.

Well that didn’t go how I had hoped.

Looks like Miles Sanders is injured much worse than the Eagles let on, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling is probably back on his 2 or 20 thing, so I’ll never know when to start him.

Also, what the hell NFL talking heads? Every article I saw predicted that Devonta Freeman would sign with somebody (maybe Tampa, maybe Chicago, maybe JAX) to be a starter “any day now.” It’s six weeks later and I’m still waiting.

If anyone is interested in picking up Drew Brees to give a slight boost at QB, I’m very willing to listen to offers. I’m interested in moving DeSean Jackson and Julian Edelman as well.
