Woo! Devonta Freeman signs with the Giants!
Once again, the conservative, sandwich-heavy portfolio pays off for the hungry investor!

It looks like a massive overbid for Dion Lewis, and it was. That’s out of desperation, since I don’t have anyone I can sub in during the bye weeks that I can count on to see a single snap. But I’m surprised only one person even put in a bid. Worst case scenario is that he is splitting time with Freeman, but Lewis will have a leg up and might get most of the passing down work. But there is also an outcome in which Freeman struggles picking up the playbook and getting his conditioning right, can’t be effective between the tackles with that terrible O-Line, and Lewis is the main guy in an offense constantly playing from behind. I have enough depth elsewhere that I can afford to overspend here. It’s interesting that, right after the big trade for Kamara, it might be losing James Robinson that sinks my season.
I put in a bid around $6 or so. And, FAAB money seems to become less valuable as the season goes on. I’d love to be a fly on the wall for the real life Freeman discussions, I don’t remember a knucklehead problem with him except for wanting more work which every back does.
I don’t know how it’s going to shake out, but I have a bad feeling both of us are going to be disappointed @Jules_Andre.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Giants go with a 3-way committee and Freeman, Lewis, and Gallman all steal carries (and points) from each other from week to week.
Or I get my RB1 back. I’m rooting for that scenario.
I don’t think anyone useful is going to come out of the Giants situation this year.
Trevor Lawrence. But that’s next year.
Useful to me is just “on the field.” Dion Lewis will get at least half the work, and if that is even 5 points a game, I can still compete. What I was desperate to avoid was a 0-projected-points dead body starter at RB during my bye weeks. I dumped my FAAB on him not because I expect a full time starter, but because there is no one else available who I can be sure will see the field come week 9.
Gallman is a nobody who wasn’t even active on game days. If he could be useful, they wouldn’t have signed Freeman, since they do the same thing and Gallman has been there all summer to learn the system and the coaches. It isn’t like the Giants are competing and needed Freeman to carry the load to keep pushing for a playoff spot. He’s a warm body who can run between the tackles while Lewis handles passing down work. That’s my read on it, anyway. It’s all a poorly educated guess.
Ha! If only. No way can they give up on Jones after only two seasons after how ridiculously high Gettleman overdrafted him. Unless Gettleman and the whole front office is also out, but again I don’t think they can give up on Gettleman so soon either. So they’re all kind of stuck in place for the next couple years I think.
I’m reminded a little bit of the 90s; there’s sort of a Dave Brown / Danny Kannell stink starting to waft from Jones. But I haven’t given up hope. Compared to the other struggling young QBs I’ve been keeping tabs on (Mayfield, Darnold) I have the most confidence in Jones. Darnold just looks like a dumpster fire; he can’t throw TDs or even yards. He was at like 108 yards entering the 4th quarter against the 49ers last week. Yikes. Jones can throw TDs and rack up yards (297 against the Steelers week 1) so there’s something to build on at least. I can only hope he gets a handle on all the terrible rookie mistakes he shouldn’t still be making. As for Mayfield, he was promising his rookie season so I keep hoping he’ll return to that form but so far not so great.
So while the Giants may not be able to start over drafting another QB early next season, I have a feeling the Fanboys will be. (Really wish I’d had a chance at Burrow. Dude threw 60+ passes without a pick (including 3 TDs!) in his second start. Nice backup to Mahomes you got there, it looks like.)
Hamlet, I was curious during the draft, but didn’t feel like it was such an out-of-left-field pick that it needed to be backed-up…however, since Ellis has said something… What was the thought process around the Burrow pick? Like I said other than some depth you’re not really hurting anywhere major, but I’m curios why invest the draft capital on a QB that I’d imagine would never be started over Mahomes?
Not a bad pick at all, and let’s face it you have had much better success than a lot of us, but I am curious.
Ha! I wrote this intending to mean:
“may not be able to start over, as in drafting another QB, …”
But on reread it pretty clearly reads as:
“may not be able to start over-drafting another QB (like Jones) …”
I must have written that subliminally.
I’m not a need based drafter in the best of times, let alone when my starting roster is pretty well set already. Nobody I draft this year will likely see starting time (barring massive injuries, which has happened in the past), so I went with talent over prospect. Plus, having suffered bad injury in the past, I like having a backup to replace Rivers.
I think Burrow is the real deal, and has a much better chance of being a stud player than anyone else drafted in the 2nd round. Rookie drafts, very quickly, become just lottery tickets, and I’d much rather have a guy I like who I think will do well, than a guy I think might (but not likely), in 2 or 3 years, become a starter. Even if he never starts for me, I think having him gives me a) solid backup so I don’t have to carry 3 QB’s for long b) good bye week fill in c) trade bait, and d) he’s not on some other contender’s team.
TLDR: Drafted for talent and potential studliness not for need.
I know you guys think you’re good with your Patrick Mahomes and your Lamar Jacksons and your Deshawn Watsons, but this is Josh Allen’s league.
As I debate between Wilson and Prescott every week
That’s true. You have the best QB situation, but I was thinking in terms of comparing him to similarly young QBs. Wilson is probably the #1 this year.
I HAVE NEW JOSH. ONLY JOSH.
30+ points every week.
What’s the over/under on Beef buying a case of Josh’s Jaqs before the season is over?
A portion of the proceeds will go to a Buffalo hospital.
Oh man Metcalf just made one of the all time “derp” blunders that’s going to make some lowlight reels.
Beef’s Dream Lineup:
QB
Josh Allen
RB
Josh Jacobs
Josh Kelley
WR
Josh Gordon
Josh Doctson
Josh Reynolds
Josh Cribbs
TE
Josh Hill
K
Josh Scobee
Josh Lambo
HC
Josh McDaniels
If I could get Buffalo to sign Josh Gordon I think the Josh to Josh connection would make that team viable.
Don’t look now sons but I’m currently projected to have the highest score in the league this week (Hamlet has a shot to take it). 32 points from the Moose and Tyler Lockett with 3 TDs. 23 points from Allen Robinson and Nick Chubb. I know everyone wrote off Chubb when the Browns re-signed Kareem Hunt, but it turns out it doesn’t matter. He’s gonna an RB1 anyway.
Even Andy Isabella caught 2 TDs and I don’t think he’s done anything yet in his career and I mostly just held onto him because he’s a second year player involved in the Arizona offense, so there’s upside there to develop.
Dale won too, which will likely make him our only 3-0 team. I want to congratulate him. It was only a few years ago that he was a bit of a punching bag in our league, but after a few years of bold moves he’s looking really good. Him and I are going to be butting heads for the division title.
And we’ve got our first Covid mess. Titans and Steelers postponed (hopefully) until Monday or Tuesday.
I’ve got Conner and Henry as two starters.
Let’s hope it’s just a postponement until Monday.
