SDMB Fantasy Football DYNASTY League: Year 12

We’ve always just gone with the latest available trade deadline in yahoo as far as I remember, and it never needed additional discussion. I think that’s the best solution, which means there would be no trading from week 12 to 16. This coincides nicely with our end of the season stretch run where all the games are divisional battles, and disallows trading in the playoffs. I don’t really think there’s much danger of someone in this league colluding to trade during the playoffs, but even the perception of that could damage the league beyond repair, so it is best to avoid the chance of that completely.

Once the champion is officially crowned on Tuesday morning after week 16, trading should open back up.

As another quick note, I don’t know if Omni was trying to say something improper was going on, but it’s pretty unfair and ridiculous to make an accusation or even insinuation that Beef would ever do anything untoward. His reputation as commish across several leagues speaks for itself. Again, I don’t know if that was the intent, but it should be said

I’m not accusing anyone of doing anything unfair or any collusion or tanking. But, that’s not the threshold here. The trading deadline isn’t in place specifically to prevent malfeasance, it’s there because we want people to compete in the postseason with the rosters they got there with.

If we agree to a rule where a manager can trade, say, their starting QB to a team who loses theirs in week 15 has a major advantage over his opponent who loses their RB in week 10 when more teams are competing. Teams are expected to manage backups and live with the luck of the draw as far as injuries and late season matchups go. If a team loses in the quarters and can then sell off his 37 year old QB to one of the remaining playoff teams for a draft pick, that completely changes the playoff picture. And that owner probably wouldn’t think they are doing anything unfair so long as the rules allow it and the draft picks are equitable, but that alone doesn’t make it right. I don’t want championships decided by which player pulls off the most timely trade once there’s only 4 teams left competing.

Right! This is fantasy football! Championships should be decided by whichever team picks up the defense playing Denver, or whichever team loses the least players to COVID, or some similarly arbitrary threshold.

This year is more dynamic than most, but yeah, if you were smart enough to stash a great defensive matchup off the waiver wire in week 12 that you plan to use in week 16, that’s great management. Noithing at all arbitrary about it. And injuries are a part of FFL, always have been.

Literally every fantasy league in the world enforces a trading deadline. The big sites don’t even offer an option to NOT have a deadline. Why the hell are we thinking we’re smarter than everyone else here? You’d think I was advocating for some off the wall idea here.

Jesus Christ the news just keeps getting better! I was sure that Gus Edwards having the backfield to himself would be a big payday for me.

My two cents regarding trade deadline is that this league doesn’t need one. You keep your team from year to year. If you want to sacrifice future seasons to get across the finish line in a year where you’re close you should be able to do so.

Ha! Though I believe I’ve had the Saints Defense since our original draft.

I went back through some of our old threads and it looks like we’ve always used “before kickoff of the last regular season week” as the deadline. I’m good with doing that again.

Yeah I mean I’m not pretending that this is anything other than sour grapes.
Frankly my squad has overperformed all year for not really being that good, and it was a surprise to even be withing striking distance of the playoffs.

I picked them up at one point two or three years ago, thinking they would turn it around. They did! …after I dropped them again

There’s no need to be so dramatic. “Literally every fantasy league in the world enforces a trading deadline.” is almost certainly not true. The league settings are generally made for public redraft leagues, so of course they default to having a trading deadline, because there’s a lot of room for chicanery if they didn’t. Lots of long-running leagues with a group of owners have custom rules. Dynasty has different implications than redraft. Some people might think it’s a valid move to try to sell future assets to win now - that’s part of the rebuilding vs win now dynamic, just carried over an extra few weeks. I don’t feel strongly about it either way, I just wasn’t sure what our rules were in the past. It’s arbitrary anyway. Is there some sort of rule of the universe that says week 12 trading is fine but week 13 trading is ridiculous?

Keep in mind, in the average 10 or 12 team league, you’re never hosed, there’s always some decent waiver pickups. Earlier this year, I (by being cheap) started a week without a QB (and won).

In this league the waiver wire is mostly scraps. So, a late tread deadline makes sense and the later the better. There’s no rookies on the waiver wire that are getting their first NFL playing time like you’d find in a redraft league.

Anyway, as I’ve said, count me for as late of trade deadline as possible

No, but trades up until championship week is ridiculous.

Agreed. Trading should not be allowed during the playoffs (especially since we’ve never done it before).

I completely understand wanting a trading deadline before the playoffs. These benches are so deep that, barring something fucking ridiculous like having your top 4 RBs, your #1 in the league WR, and one backup RB all on IR for multiple games** , teams should be able to handle a playoff only roster. So count me among those who would say trades are allowed right up to the playoffs, then off, then back on immediately after the playoffs.

I’ll also point out that Omni still has 4 people on IR, none of which have the Covid designation.

** Fuck fantasy football.

Thielen and Lock had the designation this week, but just came off of it in the last day or two

Cool. I just checked today (I’m playing Omni this week), and noticed no designations. I hadn’t checked before.

Both Lock and Theilen came off the COVID list literally today.

Are you trying to accuse me of being a hypocrite?

Not at all. I checked our lineups (any interest in parting with Kenny Golladay for a reasonable price?) because we played this week, noticed it, and recalled an earlier post. Oddly enough, I dont follow Adam Thielen or Drew Lock’s injury status.

Congrats to Dale on locking up a playoff spot.

Omni can do the same with one more win or a loss by Gaffer.

That leaves two spots for me, Jules, and Overly. Jules needs more one win and so do I, or one loss by Overly. Overly has to win out and have more Total Points than me to make the playoffs.
