SDMB Fantasy Football DYNASTY League: Year 13

I was almost exactly 50/50 with retro in projections all day. We’d both score points at the same rate. It wasn’t until Deebo’s big TD that I finally started to pull away, but I’m concerned his Tom Brady is gonna put up 60 points tonight.

I would be kind of thrilled if my choice of Deebo over AJ Brown ends up not being disastrous. It seems like Deebo is pretty good.

So I am very likely to start the season 4-0. Tom Brady would have to put up about 48 points… which I would not put past him, so I’m definitely not out of the woods.

David Montgomery had a “gruesome” knee injury, which would be crippling for my team, because with Dobbins already out I’m desperately weak at RB. I do have Montgomery’s handcuff, but it would be a big loss.

I might actually start Dawson Knox over Kyle Pitts for a while. I think it’s going to take Pitts a few weeks to get up to speed, and Knox might end up being this year’s Tonyan - a TD monster. Maybe Dawson is actually pretty good, I don’t know. It’s probably just with how prolific the Bill’s offense is.

Nick Chubb hasn’t looked quite right these last 2 weeks, I wonder if he has a nagging injury. I mean he got 100 yards this week so I’m not complaining, but Hunt has been better these last 2 weeks and that’s usually not the case.

It’s so weird that Cordarelle Patterson suddenly became good in like his, what, 9th year in the league? I drafted him long ago, but I can’t feel too bad about it, I don’t think anyone would’ve kept him on their roster for like 8 years when he really wasn’t doing much. He’s not JOSH GORDON

Speaking of, Tyreek Hill had like a 40 point week. Enjoy it while it lasts, because I project him to get 0 targets rest of season once JOSH GORDON becomes active.

Oh, right, add Sam Darnold to the list of good players I dropped. Apparently it was just the Jets, not him. Ah well.

For the second week in a row, D/ST is killing me, I get a -3 from Atlanta while Hamlet has Buffalo and their shutout. And, I’m going to be exposed as being very weak at TE if Logan Thomas is out for long, I got a big fat zero from him.

Just to make the point from our earlier discussion, @Overly_Sentimental currently has 4 guys on IR and none are COViD.

Won’t matter for this week’s game, but it’s an example of why this situation doesn’t work.

FYI: London games are back next week so if you’ve got a Falcon or a Jet, be ready and have your lineup set early.

Don’t be shocked if he doesn’t really come into his own until next season. Tight End seems to be one of those positions where it still takes real time to get acclimated.

On the plus side, it looks like the injury to Sterling Shepard has accelerated Toney’s acclimation. Watching the game yesterday, it looked to me like Jones fell in love with both him and Golladay. Shepard better come back soon if he wants to stay in the rotation.

Evan Ingram was again awful, as he always is. His specialty is dropping 7-yd gimme passes on 3rd and 5. Bonus points when he’s not even covered.

Man, this week was rough for me.

At best, I can avoid biggest blowout. And I’m going to need Hamlet to score a lot of points for that to happen.

My team exploded this week in a good way. Freaking Daniel Jones scored over 30 points but I started Sam Darnold who scored even more. (And of course Mayfield was single digits.) The final tally of 165.65 may be the highest score I’ve ever posted in this league.

If I checked the numbers right, I’ll have the second highest point total in the league behind only Hamlet after tonight. (Assuming Yahoo projections are roughly close.)

It’s starting to look like Sam Darnold really is my clear starter, which is pretty ironic. I spent a first round pick on Baker Mayfield, then again a year or two later on Daniel Jones, and then last year I picked Darnold up off the waiver wire. Not even; he had cleared waivers and was a free agent when I signed him. I should really learn a lesson from that about reaching for quarterbacks in the first round. (Technically I traded my first rounder back into the second to take Jones, but same deal.)

The real lesson for me is how night and day it is when you have actual wide receivers. I should focus on those in the first round instead of scrub running backs like Carlos Hyde.

Yeah and during the week I can use one of those spots on Deshaun Watson

But is your argument that this is making my team too good? Because, no.
It allows me extra flotsam, cf. Jacoby Brissett, who STARTED over my two WORSE qbs. You guys could probably give me ten more spots and I wouldn’t find one worthy player.

My point is that we laid out ground rules for how the extra IR spots are to be used. You’re not following those rules. This is also making it abundantly clear that expecting owners to police one another on this stuff is a terrible approach and just makes everyone miserable.

Commish, kill the IR spots please.

Hmmm. I thought we already did. The most recent vote seemed pretty conclusive.

We had 2 votes - the first of which was whether to expand the all-purpose IR slots from 2 to 3, which was voted down. The second vote, which didn’t seem to get much attention and only got a few votes, was whether we should do away with the COVID-related IR that we started last year. But I think people lost track of that vote and we didn’t get a majority.

So this came up a few times during the recent discussion of the IR rules. Last year we added 4 extra IR spots to be used for only COVID-related IR. That was put in last year when we really didn’t know if there were going to be massive COVID-related issues, like teams having to forfeit because of COVID, and so we added a few COVID-only IR slots to keep people having to drop a bunch of players just to field a team. So those extra 4 IR slots were only for people who didn’t play due to COVID rules.

But we’ve seen that COVID hasn’t been catastrophic and we probably don’t need those slots. It also creates the issues that Omni points out as far as self-policing and causing problems, so I’m inclined to do as he asks and just make an executive decision to get rid of those extra 4 COVID IR slots. If you object to this please make a case, otherwise I’ll remove them later today or maybe tomorrow.

I certainly didn’t mean to fail to follow the rules, self-police, or outright cheat. I apologize.

Things move so fast around here and I’m mostly only capable of working within the (admittedly poor) framework that Y! provides and assuming that anything therein is keeping kosher.

Tell me what to do to make amends.

I don’t think a punishment is necessary but Omni makes good points about enforceability. But… we’ve got a problem with that unfortunately. Since no one objected I was just going to go ahead and change the number of IR slots down to 2, but apparently I can’t:

From a bit of googling I didn’t find any workarounds. You can increase IR slots but not reduce them during the year. So I think we may have to wait until next year to remove those IR slots.

For the sake of simplicity, I’m going to say for this year the rule will be YOU CAN ONLY USE 2 IR SLOTS FOR ANY REASON for the rest of the year. At the end of the year I will reduce us back to 2 officially. I think we’re just going to do away with the COVID rules as it ended up not really being necessary and makes it harder for people to keep track. So… just pretend there are only 2 IR slots.

Do not use the last 4 IR slots. If you’re using those IR slots now, you will unfortunately have to drop some players until you are only using 2 IR slots. That’s what you would’ve had to have done anywayif you had understood the rules we’ve had. I’ll give until Sunday to start checking to make sure that everyone is only using 2 IR slots at most.

Any questions or objections?

I don’t think Omni was saying that you were trying to get away with something or do anything underhanded. I think he was pointing out that just the existence of the extra slots means that it’s normal and natural that people would use them. You just happened to be the example. I don’t think he was implying you had nefarious intent.

In fact, I kind of think that’s been his entire point this whole time. Any system where people do the normal natural thing and that turns out to be wrong means the system is wrong, not the people doing the normal natural thing.

And to that point, now that I think about it, since Yahoo won’t actually let us remove those slots, would it make more sense to just keep them and let people use them because they’re there?

We will of course remove them for next year. But for this year, does it really matter? Because one thing Omni is 100% correct about is that us policing each other is no bueno.

EDIT: Unless the only reason Yahoo won’t let you remove the slots is because people are currently using them?

I object because having only 2 IR slots stupidly uses suffering injuries as the basis for attempting to create parity rather than a lessening of roster size for everyone. If parity is the goal (which was the only expressed rationale I saw for not expanding IR slots), let’s just reduce the roster size for everyone rather than reduce the roster size only for the teams thar suffer more than two long term injuries.

With the expanded practice squad rules, the Covid designation, and the shortening of the “designated to return” requirement to 3 weeks, the NFL has realized that using injuries or Covid as a basis for limiting rosters is dumb, and teams that suffer injuries should be given more leeway. I think we should realize that too.

To me, keeping the IR slots at 2 was not about parity (in the sense of keeping competitive balance between teams) but about consequence. Managing the waiver wire should be a significant part of the management of your team. Especially in a dynasty league, deciding who gets your precious few IR slots instead of dropping them for a replacement is a big deal. Sure, we have to drop the replacements before the draft, but those fill ins matter quite a bit during the season and it protects you from having to put a more valuable (injured) player up for grabs during the season. If we had a ton of IR slots, there would be fewer players available in season to bid on, and fewer players makes for less strategy in churning your roster. The league as a whole is worse and less interesting the less the waiver wire matters
