SDMB Fantasy Football DYNASTY League: Year 13

First off: Congrats to SenorBeef on your 20 year anniversary. That’s a long frickin time to put up with us.

Secondly, I’m completely ambivalent about becoming a super-flex league other than I would insist it would have to start at least 2 years in the future to allow roster building. There is certainly some appeal to increasing the value of QBs in our league.

Third, depending on how the draft falls, pick #5 may be for sale.

Put me down as a tentative YES for a superflex position. But I agree with Jules and Hamlet that it shouldn’t go into practice until at least two years from now (so the 2023 season at the earliest).

How would we add it? As another starter? Replacing either the WR/RB or WR/TE slot? Some other scenario I can’t think of?

After thinking on it, I’m a hard No on superflex.

This isn’t remotely my experience. I’ve been struggling for years to find a single starting quarterback, to the point that I’m considering taking a quarterback with my first pick in the draft for the 3rd time in 4 years.

I do see that you added the qualifier “most.” I’m not part of that most, I’m part of the rest, and I vote no.

(If it matters, just the existence of this discussion puts pressure on me to draft a QB at 1.04 even if Lawrence is already off the board.)

I was also screwed in this league for years because my #1 QB was Matt Schaub.

I was thinking the transition time would likely to be at least 3 years to make sure everyone had plenty of time to plan for it. I realize this is late to discuss this issue since the draft starts soon, which is maybe a reason to table this discussion until the season. I don’t want anyone to draft a QB prematurely this year and end up having the superflex idea going nowhere. Obviously when we consider rule changes I don’t want anyone in particular to be impacted negatively, or at least disproportionately so.

Superflex wasn’t really a thing that was popular at all when this league started, but I wish we’d have set ourselves up that way originally, because the transition is bound to be awkward. Either it’s too short and people cannot adequately plan for it, or it’s longer but then people are potentially drafting a QB this year or next year that they won’t be able to start for 2-4 more years, which is also awkward. It’s for that reason that I would suggest that we’d have to have significant enthusiasm (and/or limited dissent) for the idea to implement, moreso than minor tweaks to the rules.

I would think we’d want to add a slot rather than converting any of our existing slots. Since the spot is mostly intended to be used as as QB2 most of the time I don’t think it needs to affect the rest of the RB/WR starting slots. It is essentially a new position rather than a tweaking of an old one.

Drops for The Great Old Ones:

Kalen Ballage RB
Danny Amendola WR
Damiere Byrd WR
Anthony Miller WR

Nobody on IR so four picks.

Drops for the Peteys:

Le’Veon Bell RB
Dwayne Haskins Jr. QB
Trey Burton TE
Jack Doyle TE
Darren Fells TE

5 picks for the Peteys.

You inherited a team with only 24 players (??) so cutting five players will get you six picks

Yahoo completely removed players who retired after last season (is that new?). So if the Peteys only had 25 players, one retiree would make it 24.

Correction. I have 6 picks.

Hi folks. Just a quick heads up that I’m going to be out of town this weekend for my IRL Fantasy draft weekend so I’ll be pretty quiet. I will do my best to get my keepers/cuts in on Sunday night when I get home or Monday during the day if possible. I’m juggling a newborn right now so if for some reason you don’t hear back from me at any point you can assume I’m half-delusional from lack of sleep and simply in need of a nudge.

Congrats! Awesome news.

Congrats Omni. I’m not sure why’d you prioritize your newborn kid over fantasy football though.

Apparently Austin Ekeler, who actually plays fantasy football, is offering free signed jerseys of his to fantasy owners who own him and tag him on social media when they win with him. Kinda fun.

Ok guys.
I’ll say upfront this year is gonna be tough for me. I’ve got divorce, career changes, general life upheaval, and bullshit abounding. So FF is less concerning to me than usual. But I will try hard not to shortchange you guys.
Somebody please remind me what I owe in draft pick trades this year… I’ll try and login to the ever-increasingly-awful yahoo system and get my roster straight this weekend and get my cuts done.

I don’t care what format changes we adopt, I will go along with majority rule.

Sorry to hear that, Overly. hopefully it turns around! Sometimes a distraction like this stupid fantasy game we play is good, so hopefully you have a good season.

You don’t have any leftover trades from last season. So you just have to submit your cuts. You have 26 players on your roster, so you need to cut 2 player to get a 1st round pick, cut 3 for a 1st and 2nd, etc. Don’t forget we primarily communicate between teams by private message on these boards, and it doesn’t look like you’ve seen any that have been sent in a while. This is how most of us submit trade offers and let you know when you’re on the clock, so it’s important to check those messages often.

It looks like we have 9 cut lists so far, which is good! The “deadline” is this Monday at noon eastern time, but as long as you aren’t drafting in the top 2 or 3, you can probably fudge that deadline a bit. So far so good!

Alright, time for me to look at the bottom 6 players on my roster and figure out who they are and why I added them.

Cuts:
Chris Thompson, RB, JAX
JaMcyal Hasty, RB, SF
Donald Parham Jr, TE, LAC
Isaiah Coulter, WR, Chi
Ryquell Armstead, RB, no one
Jakeem Grant, WR, Mia
Harrison Bryant, TE, Cle

I had 2 guys on IR and one guy on the COVID slot, so that gives me 4 picks

At this point, is Cam Akers’ career over? Do running backs come back from torn Achilles?

He’s still pretty young, so theres certainly a chance. But this guy is not too optimistic.

Alright, so listen up: I am not going to institute a hard-and-fast 12 hour rule on picks this year, where the next player up can automatically act 1 minute after the deadline expired. However, I am going to be tighter on time and quicker to pass people’s picks if they are late with no indication as to why or when they might be back. I do my best not to upset anyone in this league, and so when someone goes missing from their pick, I typically give them time to get back to it. However, the last couple of years that has been used too much, and we’ve had the draft come to a grinding halt at times, pissing everyone off.

If you do get skipped because you haven’t made your pick in a long time, you don’t lose that pick, you’re just giving people behind you a chance to jump ahead. You can come back in and make your pick at any time. So if you’re missing, and we let the next 2 people draft, you can come in and take your pick - you just can’t take either of those two players that were drafted since it was your pick. I think this is how the actual NFL draft works - you basically just get your pick moved back until you make it.

So, I’m going to make some points:

  1. Check your PMs on the board. Since we can’t trade picks in yahoo, everyone sends trade offers through the threads or through private messages. When you have a private message, it’ll be a green notification on the top right of your screen. You can set up the board options to e-mail you when you receive a PM if you need it (I think). If you need to send a message, or check your messages without a notification, click on your avatar on the top right of the screen and then click the messages icon.

  2. I strongly suggest responding to trade offers even if you’re not interested in the one being offered, even just to say that you aren’t interested. Maybe they can offer a different deal. At the very least, it’s good for someone to know that you aren’t interested in that deal so they can move on. It also means they know you’re listening, so they’re more likely to keep sending offers, which may end up benefitting you. Don’t be a black hole for trade offers and just not respond to them at all.

  3. If you might make a trade, send out feelers ahead of time. Something like “depending on who’s available, I may be interested in your next pick” is fine. It lets the person know that they might have an interested trade party when their pick comes up. The flip side of this is if you haven’t heard anything, and you have no specific deal in mind or owners you might want to trade with, don’t wait around for 12 hours hoping something comes in. I think this is one of the things that ends up slowing down the draft. You definitely do not have to use all the time available - if you know what you’re going to do, just make the pick. If you’re in trade talks and need more time, that’s fine, let us know.

  4. If you are going to be unavailable for a long time during your pick, you can send me or Jules a pre-ranking list that lists the players you want to draft if they’re available. We won’t look at it until your pick is up, nor use it to our advantage. It’s just a way to make things run more smoothly if you’re taking a hike through the Amazon when your pick comes up. If you’re worried about your availability but don’t want to do that, at least keep us informed about when you might be available. That will play a role in whether we decide to move on from your pick when you’ve been on the clock for longer than 12 hours.

  5. A reminder that our drafts are for any unowned players (any players not found on anyone’s fantasy roster), not just rookies. You can take anyone who is not on someone else’s team already. Jules or I will update the draft on yahoo and post it periodically to indicate what players have been taken, and yahoo should let you search for unowned players based on that.

  6. I encourage any sort of commentary, snark, predictions, and other talk during the draft. The in-thread draft, when it goes off smoothly, is one of the highlights of the year. The slow format we use over a week gives plenty of time for people to talk about things as they happen. We usually are pretty chatty during the draft, but I want to encourage more participation in this league.
