Shit, I thought he had been drafted.
Actually, I think it’s the first and last 3 games. As in, play your entire division to start and end the season. (The other 8 games are one and done against the 8 non-divisional teams.)
I’ll look into setting that up later or tomorrow. I’ve never used the scheduling too so I’m not sure how complicated it is. I’m hoping Varlos is alive and comes back to save us in time.
Edit: Actually just looked, everyone is playing a division rival on week 1. So it may not have to be changed for a week, unless it’s hard coded to only be changed before the season starts.
Just went down the rabbit hole* reading the old league threads. I’d totally forgotten that the first three years of this league were done with live drafts on yahoo, and the yahoo autodraft totally screwed multiple people. (Retro and dale in particular, who ended up autodrafting a kicker and a DEF as 1st round picks. Doh!)
I did uncover a post where Varlos detailed the scheduling formula:
*I can’t believe it’s been five years since I dropped out of the other SDMB fantasy leagues. I would have guessed 2-3 years.
It’s interesting to see how little our inaugural draft matters now. I have one player remainng from it… and that may be above average.
The fantasy football general discussion thread ran 18 pages in 2009. Nowadays they run, what, 2? I’m not sure how much is the SDMB becoming less active in that time or fantasy football interesting specifically dying out (or that there’s less to talk about - a lot of the discussion was starting new leagues and we’re pretty full now)
Something noteworthy this year - we had a crazy amount of swaps for 2017 picks last year and entered this draft with a bunch of swapped picks. But this year only one trade involved future picks - I swapped my future 2nd for Varlos’ future 3rd. We moved around plenty within the draft itself, but almost no impact on next year.
Ah, what the hell. Mike Tolbert, RB-Buf.

West, Murray and, Lacy are available for trade. I’d be looking for a WR with upside.
ARGH! THE “CODE” TAG DOESN’T WORK ANYMORE! Anyway…
With all the talk about “consensus,” I was curious how close we actually came. Here’s what I found using the FantasyPros Consensus Rankings:

Actually, our picks were pretty close to the experts. Though Omni did have two fairly big reaches (the aforementioned Trubisky and Tarik Cohen).
Varlos was on briefly today but didn’t make his picks or anything. I think it might’ve been brief since he’s trying to stay untraceable by whoever is chasing him. If you pop on Varlos, you still have your last 2 picks due, you can draft anyone available obviously. Except… in a couple hours, after the first game of the week starts, I would say it’s reasonable to say at that point you can’t draft any NE/KC players.
I’ll move the supplimental draft picks to rosters now.

I guess, in hindsight, I’m okay with this Kareem Hunt pick.
Pick 1.02 - Dalvin Cook RB Min
A monster collegiate player who has ended up in a decent situation im Minnesota. Hopefully the team addresses the OL in the next couple of draft to protect Bradford and open holes for Cook to run. An underrated receiver, as he developed quite nicely each year, but will have to focus on not fumbling as that has been an issue. This was a toss-up for me as I had him, Davis, and Mixon as all pretty even. I went with Cook because he has a clearer picture with regards to other RBs on his team, and the Zeke suspension pushed him over Davis just from a short-term need basis
2.02 - O. J. Howard TE TB
I went with BPA here and I like this pick as he could turn into the next stud TE. He was listed as a 1st round guy so I’m happy to land him here. Brate will be the guy this year, but his athleticism should make him a monster with Winston for the foreseeable future. Helps me with a position need as Ebron has never been able to stay healthy.
3.02 - Curtis Samuel WR Car
3.11 - Dede Westbrook WR Phi
Two WRs that have good upside here, but no guarantees as to how they will develop. WR is my biggest need but with the way that RB come off the board here it was hard to pass up on Cook when you’re at the top.
I was really hoping that with Williams injury he would fall to me in the 2nd but that obviously didn’t materialize.
Self-review:
Hindsight is 20/20, of course, but Hunt is clearly a home run. He broke the all-time record for single game yards from scrimmage by a player making his debut last night, and had three scores and a half-dozen catches. Andy Reid likes to run his tailbacks until the wheels come off, and the only other RB who carried the ball last night was West (2 carries, though he did vulture a TD). Unfortunately, I can’t take any credit for this pick. I was basically forced into it by the injury to Spencer Ware; if Ware was healthy, I wouldn’t have bothered drafting Hunt until the third round. I even traded out of the 1.05 pick, though I only moved back one spot.
I didn’t really want D’Onta Foreman either. I spent a year trying to get fewer shares of the Houston offense, and Foreman is behind Lamar Miller and his giant contract. On the bright side, Foreman is behind Miller and his large contract; Miller showed last year that he’s better as a 15-carry guy than a bell cow, so Foreman may get 10+ touches per game this season. In the long run, it’s possible that Houston decides paying $40 million to a non-bell-cow is a poor investment and cuts or trades Miller. Foreman has the size to carry the ball 25 times a game, and he has the pedigree to be a top-12 back.
Chris Goodwin is the one guy I’m really happy to get. He was dominant at times in training camp, and DeSean Jackson isn’t exactly going to develop into a Larry Fitzgerald-style possession receiver once his speed is gone. The Bucs will have a productive offense for years to come and Goodwin is never, ever going to see a double team so long as Mike Evans is healthy. The question is whether he will get enough looks to be a fantasy WR2 with Jameis’ propensity for spreading the non-Evans targets around.
Mike Tolbert is now Shady’s primary backup. Shady is always one cut away from a serious knee injury, and it always looks like he’s injured something when he gets tackled even when he hasn’t. He’s obviously not going to be part of my plan long term but he will likely have goal-line value this year and would be hugely valuable (including as trade bait) if Shady goes down.
I really wanted to come out of this draft with a QB, since Paxton Lynch’s development arc is worrying. In hindsight, I probably should have taken Deshaun Watson or Mahomes at 2.06 instead of Foreman, but I didn’t want any more shares of the KC and Houston offenses. Trubisky was already gone but I didn’t want him anyway (on his own merits). Still, any draft that produces an instant RB1 with the sixth pick is a good one. B+.
Draft Self-Review…
I pretty much played it safe this year. No pick trading. No reaches. No projects. And most of the players I picked were the BPA at their draft slot.
1.12 - Zay Jones, WR, BUF
Sammy Watkins was sent packing and Anquan Boldin retired, so Zay Jones is somehow the #1 receiver in Buffalo. He had a good preseason, and the sportswriters like him, but the QB situation in Buffalo is awful. So it remains to be seen if he’ll be able to contribute this year. But I like him very much for the future.
3.06 - Aaron Jones, RB, GB
Jones is sitting behind Ty Montgomery and Jamaal Williams on the depth chart, but the sportswriters like him as well, so maybe he’ll get his chance someday.
4.06 - Wayne Gallman, NYG, RB
No one on the Giants seems to like Paul Perkins (who I actually traded up to get last year), so it’s possible that he’ll be out before the end of the year. Gallman hasn’t wowed anybody so far, but he was a good pick at this point in the draft and a decent insurance policy for a Perkins-less Giants.
Supplemental 1.3 - Trevor Siemian, QB, DEN
Trevor Siemian is boring, but he’s also a decent emergency QB. And if I need him, I’ll be glad I have him.
Overall Outlook…
Once again I repeat, my team is OLD. But short of blowing up absolutely everything, I’m kind of stuck in limbo this year. I’ve still got enough firepower to contend for a playoff spot, but I don’t think I’ve got championship hopes this year. And that Julian Edelman injury really hurts me. But I can probably still expect great years from Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, and Devonta Freeman.
And if I miss the playoffs, probably enough to dominate the Consolation Bracket at the very least.
Self review! Splitting this up because there was a lot to go over.
1.01 Jules [from dale] - Leonard Fournette, RB, JAX
1.03 Jules - Joe Mixon, RB, CIN
So, the top of the draft. This was a crazy, confusing mess that stretched out over days of planning. My initial goal was to get three of these top five picks. Because I inherited a team in this league, very few of the guys on the roster were guys I believed in. I turned over nearly the entire roster last season, but even still, I had almost nobody at the top of my roster that was “my guy.” This would be okay if the roster was competitive, but finishing 10th meant I couldn’t settle for one upgrade a year, because it would take years to cycle the roster, and only then if I got every decision correct. I think I hit more than I missed last year (so far), but I’m still a ways away. I needed a burst infusion of elite talent.
The initial offer to dale got a positive reaction, and I felt pretty confident about it. Gurley was untouchable for me last year, but as the season went on I hated what I saw out of him. He has the talent, of course, but he doesn’t get anything that isn’t blocked cleanly. He starts to pout and shut down, and he wasn’t someone I could trust. I just hate his game, and with one 100-yard effort in the last 24 games, it was time for him to go. Things are much better in L.A. for him, but I wanted out while I still had a chance to get top value for him. Another season like 2016 and he wouldn’t get me much in trade, even as a young bellcow and one of the top dynasty RBs in the league.
I was absolutely going to take Corey Davis #1. From there, I thought Joe Mixon was the best back in the draft, but I couldn’t rely on just him because he has the most blocked route to playing time. Even though Jeremy Hill is a free agent after this season and it is a near lock that Mixon is the lead back with incredible upside next year, it is very possible Mixon is only playing a third of the snaps by ther end of the year. So, Davis, Mixon for next year, and any one of the other RBs for this year, and I would be set. And then I couldn’t get anyone to budge on the other 3 picks, so this caused a major problem for me.
Since I traded Gurley, I was now short a RB to start for me this season. Mixon’s situation is too up in the air to be an every week starter this year. McCaffrey is the PPR monster, but his opportunity is the most gameplan-dependent, and his QB and coach are the worst possible combination for McCaffrey’s skillset. Fournette is the mutant marvel, but playing on the worst team (I just gave up this exact situation with Gurley…), and Cook was the least gifted of the four. Plus, I have McKinnon, and I know exactly how Minnesota treats RBs. No perfect options, and all unique from the others.
If I took Davis as I had planned, my roster would have probably been worse top-to-bottom, than if I had kept Gurley. I have a lot of middling, upside WRs right now. I can easily start 4 a week, if needed (though outside of T.Y. Hilton, none are elite). Davis would be the best talent of them all, but I’m not hurting for starters at that spot. By taking him, I’m short at least 1 starting RB, and maybe 2 during the byes. So I kinda played myself into a hole and had to adjust to get out. Then the question became, who would Retro take at #2, and was I in danger of losing my guy in Mixon? Retro is pretty desperate for WR help, so his likeliest pick was Davis. But with Zeke maybe missing time, he wanted a RB to plug in. Do I risk losing my guy, or reach and take him #1?
I decided on Fournette for two reasons. Firstly, because he has the athletic pedigree and the opportunity that I can start him day 1 and not worry about his playing time. Worse case, I traded Gurley for Gurley, except I got younger, bigger, and stronger, and I got an extra pick. Secondly, it leaves Davis on the board to try to lure Retro into taking him as a need pick, which frees me up to get my guy. A little gamesmanship is afoot! (I would have probably taken Cook had Mixon been taken) But it didn’t matter. Retro went with Cook, I got Mixon anyway, and that was that. My plan was utterly fluid and I was still figuring out how to play this up to the moment I picked at 1.01.
I think I got the best overall talent (Mixon), and the freakiest athlete with opportunity (Fournette), and I would not be surprised if I ended up picking the worst two guys of the top 5/6. Should be interesting!
2.01 Jules - [from dalej42] Marlon Mack, RB, IND
2.03 Jules - Evan Engram, TE, NYG
There was a big group of RBs here that all had issues, and it took me a while to figure out what I was going to do here. I wanted to overload on RBs this year because it is a notably strong, possibly historic, draft at that position. If I take 4 and hit on only half, I have four solid starters going into next season, and my draft flexibility starts to open up a lot of options for me to better my team. So, at the start of round two, I wanted Mack and Perrine. But there, again, was a pick between my two, for which I had to strategize.
Mack was the lowest ranked of the guys here, which included Perrine, Foreman, Joe Williams, the GB guys, and maaaaaybe Conner. I watched every snap these guys played in the preseason, I watched their highlights, and I watched training camp videos from around the web. Mack is, by far, the most explosive looking of the guys in that tier. He can do everything on the field, and unlike the other guys in this group, he was the only one who looked different on the playing field. I need my guys to show me something special that is going to make it impossible for them to be left off the field (which is why I pushed so hard for Howard last year and traded for him). The few videos I saw of Mack made it look like he was playing with a turbo button that the other guys didn’t have. His cuts were sharp and decisive, and he looked like he had a special burst. Additionally, his situation is great because Gore is ancient and on the last year of his deal, and Mack is the only guy on the roster who is a choice of the new GM. I bet he starts at least one game this year, and has the full load of carries next year.
I almost took Perrine at 2.01, because the Washington backfield is a mess of JAGs, and I figured Mack would be there at 2.03. But he really struggled this preseason, and he struggled when other players did not which isolates his shortcomings from the flow of the game. Worse, he failed the eye test for me harder than any of the others, and it wasn’t worth missing out on my guy to play against other owners. My next consideration was O.J. Howard, who everyone has raved about as a can’t-miss-superstar. I passed on him with extreme prejudice, which I’ll explain another time. I don’t like Foreman’s situation or talent profile, and I would definitely pick the wrong one of the GB guys.
So I decided against doubling up on RB again and went with the one other guy I was certain about, which was Engram. He’s an elite TE prospect in my eyes. His routes are unusually good for a rookie TE, he has excellent hands, and he has an outstanding athletic profile. Unlike the other top TEs, he’s the only one already being worked into the gameplan because McAdoo can’t keep him off the field. He has been very positive on Engram’s preparation and performance in camp. Engram’s being moved around the formation, getting looks in preseason games. He’s going to get work, even as a rookie, although with the Giants’ loaded receiving options he won’t be a fantasy breakout. He’s Kellen Winslow without being an idiot, and Jordan Reed with actual athleticism.
4.03 Jules - Chris Carson, RB, SEA
No third round pick, and I missed out on Tarik Cohen to backup Jordan Howard, who I thought I might get around here. Carson is at the end of the depth chart, but he’s an above average athlete and not behind much talent. Rawls isn’t special, and Seattle clearly doesn’t consider him so because they brought in Lacy. And he’s already hurt and will maybe miss week 1. Lacy, in case you missed it, is the same Eddie Lacy who is fat, ineffective, and looked awful this preseason. He’s done. Prosise has an established 3rd down role, so isn’t a natural clog on the depth chart, and he’s constantly hurt anyway. And only Prosise is under contract next year. Carson is the easy choice for early down work late this season and heading into 2018. I think Seattle likes him a lot, too.
5.03 Jules - Mack Hollins, WR, PHI
Homer pick! This one was easy. Hollins has been incredibly good this preseason and training camp. He can catch(!!!), and has a dedicated, locked up roster spot because he’s great on special teams. With Alshon only currently signed for this year, Torrey Smith being a decoy, and nobody else on the roster who can actually play, I think Hollins will see a lot of work later this season. He could be a startable WR next year if Alshon isn’t brought back and/or the team cuts Torrey Smith (whose contract is structured to do so pretty much whenever). I like Hollins a lot, and he’s the only offensive rookie in Philly who has shown anything. It’s going to be a weird year for the Eagles.
6.01 Jules [from dale] - Paul Richardson, WR, SEA
Welcome back, Paul! I cut you because you were hurt and you sucked last year. Then you kinda exploded in the playoffs and showed your explosiveness and that your draft pedigree was not wasted. Now you’re the #2 WR in Seattle, and you’ll see single coverage all game, every game. I like your chances to earn out this late pick.
Okay, here’s my overall summary if you don’t want to read that nonsense above. Frankly, I always feel stupid posting these things because I can’t imagine anyone reads these, but still.
I had a lot of agency this draft, having two of the top three picks. I wasn’t going to miss my guys, really. So, needless to say, I love my draft and got almost everyone I targeted before the draft started. I didn’t really reach for anyone aside from maybe Mack, who was at worst seven or eight picks too early. But I didn’t have a third, so it wasn’t like I would have gotten him at 20, anyway. The only guy I coveted that I missed was Tarik Cohen, and only as a handcuff, but he went two rounds early. My positional breakdown looks awful since I went heavy on RB, but I think this draft went really well. I think I fairly earned an A, or at worst a B+.
So, what is the state of the hungriest haruspex in the land? Fournette already has a lock on a workhorse job, and Jordan Howard already had his breakout and is currently the lead back with no real competition. With Mixon, I have three of the top eleven or twelve dynasty RBs in the league, by probably every ranking. Then there’s Derrick Henry right around there, who is as high as 11 in some sources, which gives me four of the top 15 or so. Since DeMarco Murray can be cut next year at age 30 with no dead cap, I estimate I’'ll have four every week starters by this time next year. Plus, I think Marlon Mack is a full time starter next year with no Gore in town, and Chris Carson is the 1st/2nd/goal line back in Seattle next year with Rawls and Lacy on the way out. I could be looking at six starters, all with athletic upside, by next year. None older than 23 years old. If it comes together that way, you will never see a better stable of players at the most critical position in fantasy.
(And I have DeAndre Washington waiting behind 31-year-old Marshawn Lynch in Las Oakland, and athletic superfreak Jerick McKinnon about to be a free agent)
At TE, Engram is typically ranked around 12 as a dynasty prospect out of all TEs, which is a starter in this league. But after this season I’m certain he’ll be in the top 8-10. Along with Hunter Henry, who is a consensus top 5 fantasy TE in dynasty (and was awesome for me last year even with limited work), I have two solid, very young options here. I love where I’m at.
I didn’t do much with WR, but I’m okay. Meh. Okay. I still need some guys to take a step, but T.Y. Hilton is elite, so I at least have someone to carry the position. Stefon Diggs is a stud in waiting, and should benefit from an improved Vikings run game and more downfield opportunities. Jordan Matthews is free to soak up targets with little competition in Buffalo, which is how he has amassed an average season of 75/891/6, consistently, over the last three years. Not special, but a solid flex option. Donte Moncrief is still young with a ton of upside, and between Tyler Lockett and Paul Richardson, someone is going to be a relevant fantasy player in Seattle (with the slight benefit of the hookup with my QB). Breshad Perriman is a former 1st round draft pick who is still young and can turn it around, and J.J. Nelson was quietly a really consistent producer at the end of last season on a team with few receiving options ahead of him. This is the weakest part of my team, but it could sort itself out and I could be fine, or I could be looking to make a move here. We’ll see. I only need one or two of Diggs/Mathews/Moncrief/Perriman/Seattle to be startable. So we’re almost there.
Finally, at QB, I think I’m in great shape. Russell Wilson is 28 and fully in his prime. His attempts have gone up every year in the league, and he’s a no doubt stud. He was hobbled all last season, but I think he returns to the top 3 in fantasy, which he did in 2015, and stays there for a few years. Carson Wentz is a player I strongly believe in, and after this season he’ll be in the conversation as an every week fantasy starter. Then there’s Garoppolo, who has already shown a high command of the position and everybody knows will be a high quality starter once he gets his chance. Probably in New England, probably in 2019. I’m set for a decade at QB.
Finally, the cap off my post-draft, preseason preview, here are some of the picks I like and didn’t like, by round. I’m not sure I like team by team reviews for dynasty because the draft is so strange, so take what you get.
Round One
• Corey Davis at 5 is insanely good, and seeing the reigning champ get maybe the top overall prospect is a big concern. I know I just said I almost took him, but I blame you all and you have all utterly failed.
• Zay Jones. Not a great value, but not a reach. I just like his profile a lot. I would have probably taken him and 2.01 if he was there. Could be special, if they find a way to throw the ball in Buffalo
• Mitchell Trubisky. I know he was discussed earlier, but even if you don’t consider the value at 1.08, I don’t think he’s even the third-best QB prospect in this draft (for fantasy). I haven’t studied his tape as I normally do for the top QBs, so I could be wrong. I would have rather had Mahomes, then Watson, then Kizer.
• Marshawn Lynch. The strategy is fine, but I wonder about the value. I thought he might go in the late second or early third. This is the type of pick that makes sense and is a fine choice, but becomes special after trading down.
Round Two:
• Chris Godwin. I agree with his upside, and the value was fine. He’s just very, very unlikely to see much work in the next year or even two. It gets hard to hold someone like that for two years.
• O.J. Howard. Tough round for you guys. I had to kinda reach on a pick I liked, and it was lukewarm praise. So, O.J. Howard.
This fucking guy gets talked about like he’s the can’t miss superstar, who is universally loved and has joined the pantheon of death and taxes as the only sure things in life.
Okay. But how come Alabama couldn’t find a way to use him as a receiver? And how come he is ALREADY being talked about as a pure blocking TE this season? Multiple sources have reported that Howard “might not make an immediate impact as a receiver” and “Howard’s early contributions will primarily come as a blocker.” IF he ran a single route in the preseason, I didn’t see it. He can’t beat out Brate. Nobody seems to be willing to make him a receiver. I know this will look stupid in a few years, but I think he’s a fantasy bust. You just drafted a fucking third offensive tackle in fantasy. At least you got him later than expected, so good value. Do we give fantasy points for sealing the edge? Pancakes? No?
• Tarik Cohen. Love the player, love his tape, hate the value. Two rounds early, surely.
• Darren McFadden. Lol. I totally get it, and it made sense at the time. But if this league hasn’t ever seen a second round pick get cut before week 1, it might be about to.
A gamble never failed so spectacularly, so quickly. SECOND ROUND
Round Three:
• Aaron Jones. I will tend to side with athletic prowess as a tie breaker between prospects, so this was a solid choice.
• Patrick Mahomes. Talent, situation, it’s all here. My top fantasy QB choice.
• Kenny Golladay. Surprising value. I thought he would be overdrafted from the early preseason hype.
• Cooper Kupp. I love his game for fantasy and his fit. I’m definitely willing to trade for him as soon as you are.
• Joe Williams. Like everyone else, I read that article about the 49ers draft and put him on my watch list. You will never find a front office/coach more in love with a draft pick. But he suuuuuuuuucked on the field. He got hurt, that’s not on you, but man… He was bad.
• DeShone Kizer. Lol Browns. Gr8 pick, looser.
Round Four+
• Matt Breida. You were wise to double up. I like Breida a lot, so if you get tired of waiting for him while he rides the bench, send him my way.
• Danny Woodhead. Savvy, well worth the pick. One of those picks where you just have to give the old respect golfclap.
• Jacksonville. Yup, I said it.
• Chris Conley. One of my guys, he was my 6th round pick, with Richardson as my backup choice.
• ??? (4th) / ??? (5th) Mysterious choices here, I’m not sure I see the value. Tempted to make these green just from a “you guys suck so bad I don’t need to use my picks to win” taunt angle, but I just can’t get behind these selections. Baffling strategy. Possibly embarrassing. May God have mercy on your soul. (I hope everything is okay)
• Mike Glennon. I just don’t even know what to say here. I know you weren’t fully on board with this pick, and Hoyer went the pick before, but still. I think you did this for the comedy, and if you admit it, this goes green. If you had managed to draft all Bears it would have been the greatest thing that ever happened in this league. Aside from when one of Beef’s players actually died. Literally. Died.
