SDMB Fantasy Football DYNASTY League: Year Seven

I would have guessed before the week started you’d have a less than 2% chance of missing the playoffs. 2 or 3 weeks ago it would be less than 1%.

Sure is nervewracking in here. My team is garbage today. I need a big day for Aaron Rodgers but he plays against a reasonably tough Dallas passing D. And my other remaining player, Gronk, I don’t even know if he’s really going to play. It sounds like he might be a decoy.

I picked wrong out of Mathews/Sproles.

I’m worried I’m going to end up missing the playoffs by a slim margin after getting all excited for my late season comeback.

Rodgers and Gronk, save me.

Well, yeah. I mean what are the odds of losing five players to injury in one week?

Yeah, kind of ridiculously tough for you.

On the other hand, I may actually catch you in points scored this year, which makes the division win pretty legit.

Varlos is still in it against Furt, and he hasn’t passed you in points yet and you have better players yet to play. If Varlos comes back to win (Sanders playing and Gostkowski still to play, 14 points behind furt who only has Richard Rodgers) then you’d get the wildcard. That’s actually fairly likely at this point. Dramatic finish.

Hrrm. I’m going to have the best record, *and *the most points scored, so of course I’ll get … the 4-seed. Tiebreakers are dumb.

That is very silly, although you would’ve played the same guy either way, assuming Furt makes it. 1v4, or 4v1.

I’m more nervous than maybe I should be. I’m up 17 with Gronk while Petey has Blount. But Gronk is a total question mark at this point. He might just be a decoy. The game is certainly in reach.

Who’d have guessed that starting the Raiders D would’ve been my best option over Denver?

I think Hamlet gets the 1-seed if he holds on – not a sure thing yet, but he’s favored.

Why would he get the 1 seed? Division record? I don’t think that matters for overall seeding. I would think it’d be points total.

From here

And that’s total fantasy points.

So I think you’ve got the #1 seed.

Unless I’m reading it wrong, Hamlet will have the same record and more points scored.

Mental fart. I was comparing the #1 seed between you and Hamlet, not furt and Hamlet. Yes, since division winners have seed priority, Hamlet would get it.

I sort of lucked out in that Jordan Cameron, my only backup TE, is playing tomorrow night. So I could pull Gronk for him. He’s not likely to have a big day at all (although NYG is bad against TEs), but he’s probably going to get me at least 5ish points. That 5ish points added to my 17 point lead would probably keep me safe.

But Gronk is active, practiced twice this weeks - it’s just that reports of him having a limited role or being a decoy scare me.

This is one of those decisions where I’ll pick the wrong one and lose by 2 points and set myself on fire.

And all because I had the gall to only score the second-most points this week.

On the Good News front, if RNATB actually misses the playoffs, I own his 1st Rounder. I thought for sure it was going to be a late-1st when I made the deal. If everything breaks perfect the rest of the way, I’d have the 5th pick, the 12th pick, and it looks like the 16th pick.

… if Varlos ends up as the wild card, I will be eliminated. So, erm, come on Gostkowski!

ETA: yeah, that too.

It never even occurred to me that this was a possibility.

Okay, I’m confused about something.

We all seem to be under the impression that if RNATB loses, unless he loses to a 90 point lead over furt for the wildcard tiebreaker, he’s in.

But clearly that’s not the case. If furt wins, and RNATB loses, which is what happens, RNATB is out because furt and RNATB had the same record going into the week.

Did I just have some sort of massive brain fart where I assumed furt would lose the last week and was playing the tiebreaker possibilities based on it? Justin also seemed to be saying that RNATB was in as long as furt didn’t make up the 90 point gap. RNATB himself also seemed to think this. But furt didn’t actually make up the 90 point gap this week (although he came close), he just beat him on record.

I’m a little confused as to what we were all thinking.

The confusion was that nobody realized/considered furt could actually take the division title from VarlosZ. So all the wildcard tiebreaker scenarios (points) were comparing RNATB with furt. Now that furt has won the division, RNATB is up against the buzzsaw that is VarlosZ points total. No chance. (And I like to think I contributed to the indignity of VarlosZ getting relegated to a wildcard thanks to my early-season victory over VarlosZ. Go go spoiler Fanboys!)

I’m trying to figure out my draft pick. Looks like I’ll finish 6-8 (stupid win to end the season…) with a logjam for the #2 pick. Looks like the battle for first pick shakes out like:

Retro 3-11 (~1400)
Ellis 6-8 (~1460)
Isotopes 6-8 (~1470)
Dale 6-8 (~1540)
Omni 6-8 (~1580)

Not sure if record is factored into the final standings for this purpose, but record actually ends up irrelevant since Retro is a mortal lock for the #1 pick and everyone is has the same record. Also not sure how our draft seeding actually works.

Actually, hmmm, now I’m wondering about the ethics of tanking my last WR spot for draft position.

Ellis: 1450.50 + Jarvis Landry
Petey: 1469.38

I’m currently leading Justin_Bailey by ~5 points in our matchup this week, and Justin has no players remaining, so if I just pull Landry out of my lineup I clinch both the Week 14 win and a lower points total than Petey. Landry could definitely score 19+ points (he’s projected for 15.16) so leaving him in could drop me from the #2 overall pick to #3 overall next year.

I see no reason to start anyone in that slot other than it’s kind of cheesy to leave it open. With all my IR players, I easily was able to make room to pick up another receiver, so I chose Hakeem Nicks. What say the group, should I:

  1. Leave the slot empty to clinch this week’s win and the #2 pick next year
  2. Start Hakeem Nicks to probably have the same effect, with remote chance Justin could win if Nicks scores -5
  3. Start Jarvis Landry to clinch this week’s win but possibly drop to the #3 pick next year

I’m leaning toward starting Nicks. Any objections on grounds that that would be cheese?

You’ve actually beaten me at least once every year. I’ve got a lifetime record that’s 8 games better overall, but I’m 6-8 against the Fanboys.

I tend to think one should just do his best every week, even when it might hurt his draft position next year. It’s one thing if you really want to win the game and there’s a small-but-real chance a negative score could lose it for you, but Landry isn’t going to lose 4 fumbles. We want the final standings to be as accurate as possible so that the actually lesser teams get the higher picks, generally.

Others may feel differently, if they do that’s fine.

Well, when you put it that way, you suck.

Landry gets the start, so now Petey and I have something real to root for in tonight’s game: The Over/Under on Landry is 19 points, Petey has the over, I have the under. Winner gets the #2 overall pick, loser gets the #3.
On an unrelated note, did anyone watch the Jets/Titans game? If so, are you as shocked as me to learn that Mariotta scored 21+ fantasy points? Almost double what Big Ben managed.
