SDMB Fantasy Football early discussion

Moreso than the actual rankings of finishes I’m just interested in whether or not you adjusted your rosters every week, made the live draft, and just generally are enthusiastic about FF. I know Kiros and Retro were very active last year, and I want to say that you played every week Kid, but I can’t quite remember, so that’s good.

Retro, were you the one that ran the league we played in last year? I don’t mean to steal your show if you want to run it again this year… but if you want, we can invite all of the active players from that league into this one, along with some enthusiastic players who weren’t in our league last year. The scoring/rules/etc will be up for discussion, but I think we had a pretty good league running last year, outside of falling interest from a few in the league as the year wore on.

Well, looking back it seems that I led the league in roster moves with 22. So I guess I was pretty active.

Didn’t I trade you Maroney for Grossman and Glenn?

Yes, you did. Who’d have thought that most valuable, or at least reliable, player of the bunch was going to be Terry Glenn? We made that trade after Maroney and Grossman looked like they were going to have big breakout seasons, and they both slumped.

Team name is the Tazmanian Devils…user name mcotherock2000

Senor Beef- No problem. I commished last year, but was hoping somebody else would run it anyway. Too much weight upon these frail shoulders.

I was pretty active last year. In the end I was running two other teams besides my own.

I’d like in again. Didn’t do so well last season (or the season before) due to running back (darn Giants kept Tiki out of the end zone most of the season) issues, but once more into the breach.

Could someone explain to me how the whole keeper league works? I know some people here participate in that sort of thing. Are there logistical problems with it? What happens when one person quits? Any interest, since we’re going to all ideally be putting a lot of thought into our league, in making ours something long term like that? Just throwing ideas to discuss out there.

I’ve never heard of this. Could you explain it?

I’m definitely in, and I was one of the few, the proud, the people who played out the string last year.

I was The Gridbirds last year, and my Yahoo ID is on my SDMB user page.

My non-SDMB girlfriend is looking for a new fantasy league too, so we can probably count her in as well.

Our rules are posted in the OP of the keeper league thread. Reproduced here:

  1. You can only keep a maximum of 3 players.
  2. You can only keep players drafted after the third round. (Fourth rounders or later only.)
  3. A player can only be kept a maximum of twice. (Making 3 total roster years.)
  4. A kept player incures a two round penalty. (e.g: drafted in the 6th, kept in the 4th.)

We have not had anybody drop out since we started doing keepers. (Nobody remembered the rosters from the first year, so we didn’t really start until year two. There was some turnover between the first two years.) Currently Weirddave is perilously close to being dropped, but we have multiple SDMB members willing to take over his team if that should happen. In such a case, they would inherit his draft picks, keepers, draft position, etc…

Since I’ve taken over as commish we’ve also instituted offseason trading, which adds some strategy and extra fun into the mix. This is possible within the default yahoo live draft using a utility I wrote that notifies the group who picks for whom each pick. (We had a crapload of traded picks last year.)

I’m down with another keeper league, though I suspect there will be some turnover between the first two seasons. I can help out the commish with any questions that arise.

For me, the biggest obstacle in using a roster-locking waiver wire scheme is that I don’t turn on the computer before the Sunday 1:00pm games, which is when you need to lock them. (I usually wake up to a blaring television at 1:00pm on the nose using the tv’s WakeUp timer.) Also, Thursday night games end up screwing with a roster-locking solution.

So I came up with a non-locking waiver wire, which ended up being very easy to manage. Here’s the waiver wire Commissioner Note I post once the season starts:

WAIVER WIRE
All players go on waivers starting at kickoff of their game, and come off Wednesday. Prior to Wednesday, file waiver claims via email if the player cannot start until next week. (As in, his game was already played.)

PURPOSE
The WAIVER WIRE is in effect so that breakout players don’t get awarded based on who is closest to the computer on Sunday afternoons.

BYE WEEKS
From Wednesday on, if a player is going into a bye week he is not subject to waivers for the entire week. Before Wednesday, players who just had a bye are not subject to waivers and can be signed any time.

MAKING CLAIMS
While players are on waivers, make a claim by emailing the player(s) you want to me. Title your email “Waiver claim”. Include as many players as you like, but list them in order of most wanted first. Include the players’ full first and last names, positions, and teams. I will send back confirmation emails to claims made before Tuesday.

AWARDING PLAYERS
Players will be awarded based on waiver priority, and each successful claim pushes you to the end of the line. Each Tuesday night I’ll post a notification here detailing who got awarded to whom. You can then add the guys you won yourself, as well as freely sign any other free agents not claimed by anyone else. If you won’t be able to make your roster adjustments yourself, I’m happy to do it for you if you let me know in your waiver claim. Include who you want to drop to make room, and also note if you want them to start and who should be benched.

CLAIM JUMPS (Signing a guy while he’s on waivers)
I won’t be locking and unlocking the rosters, but I will be undoing any free agent acquisitions that jump the waiver wire. There is no penalty for jumping the waiver wire other than tipping your hand to everyone else. I won’t generally undo Tuesday claim jumps, nor will I confirm them by email. Claim jumps are automatically logged as waiver claims, and as such any other owners are still free to file a claim on the jumped player(s). If you did not want to spend a waiver claim on a guy you accidentally jumped, email me to let me know.

YAHOO DEFAULT WAIVERS
In addition to Wednesday waivers, yahoo’s internal waiver system also pushes you to the end of waiver priority. The safest approach is to scan a few days back in the transaction history to see if the guy you want was recently released. If he was, then at least be aware that you could lose WP if you sign him. If you accidentally sign someone off waivers without intending to, dropping me an email ASAP will greatly increase your odds of having me undo it for you.

You can definitely count me in. By the time we draft I will have steady internet access which should be nice. No internet killed my baseball season but since football is during school it always works out. I will be out of the country from the 1st of September through the 9th but I can always set up my auto draft. Anytime before that works for me though.

my yahoo id: blasterace

Righto. I’m in.

I’m phljimmy_chitwood. beef, one artifact of Yahoo’s recent changeover to a nickname system is that you can’t look a player up by Y ID anymore. Spam prevention, and all that. You could do it as recently as a few months ago.

I’d be up for a keeper league. Would we start fresh or use last years rosters?

It’d have to be a fresh start, I think, given that people didn’t draft last year with the consideration that they’d be doing it for the long term. Plus probably only about half of our league will be filled with people from our league last year. I’m not sure if it’s a good idea or not, I’m just throwing it out there for discussion.

We have an interest list of 14 people. Would a league of 14 teams be viable? The playoff structure and schedule would have to be pretty weird. 12 seems ideal - 16 dilutes the talent pool a lot, and less than 12 condenses it too much. I’m open to playing a bigger league, but I’m looking for opinions on that.

If we do have to only take twelve, I’m going to give preferential treatment to the people I’ve played with before in the past and know to be reliable.

Does anyone who has expressed interest have a reason that they could not attend a draft on august 28th somewhere around 8-10pm eastern? I’m not sure if those slots are open, but if we create the league soon I’d imagine they will be.

Also, does anyone know what the difference between the free and premium yahoo leagues are? Their page includes a “what’s new”, but I’m not sure, other than the new features, what the differences are.

Edit: Huh, actually it appears that the same “what’s new” page appears for the regular yahoo leagues too, so it wasn’t a description of the premium-only features.

Oh, woops, nevermind. It costs $125 to run the premium league. I figured it’d be $20 or something, and I might spring for it.

And I forgot one of the fundamental issues up for discussion - things we’d have to set at the league start along with the size - would be a point vs head to head system. I used to think points was superior, because luck of the matchup didn’t matter as much, but after playing head to head last year, I like the excitement of watching the monday night game and hoping your opponent’s RB gets stuffed at the line all day, or having your own guy play and say “I just need 62 yards out of you and I win this week”. What do you guys prefer?

The premium league adds automated waiver wire support, live stat tracking, and other stuff you don’t need.

As for league size, the keeper league has been going strong for years with 14 owners, so it’s not an unreasonable number. One tip is that you may want to limit the running backs, as the RB situation in that league is a bit nuts. (Two dedicated RB slots plus a RB/WR flex spot. Everyone ends up drafting 5 running backs.) One dedicated slot plus one flex should be fine.

I’m available on the 28th.

What do you for the playoffs with 14 teams? Top 8?

My preferences: (strong opinions bolded)

Head-to-head
Playoffs weeks 16 & 17 (I expect and am fine with weeks 15 & 16 instead.)
Fractional points
Negative points

As for rules, whatever works. Here’s what I like:
30 yards passing, 4 points per passing TD, -2 per Int
10 yards rushing/receiving, 6 points per TD, -1 per fumble, -1 per lost fumble
FG: 5 for 50 yarder, 4 for 40 yarder, 3 for everything else
Between 0.1 and 0.5 points per reception.

I also kinda dig IDP, though it’s mostly a novelty. Could be very interesting in a keeper league.

Top 4, so 8 if you include the consolation bowl. Here’s the settings we use: (The points allowed are still up for debate, though I’m a fan of the way they are boosted.)
