It appears that the Frequently-Asked Questions pages for the SDMB are boilerplate from the vBulletin folks. They describe how to use features that we don’t have enabled (e.g., avatars, thread rating, and private messages), and overlook some fundamentals about the way our boards work (e.g., reporting messages, privileges of guests vs. members, and relegating flames to the pit). Some of the information is also old or incomplete.
Since the FAQ section is linked from the top of every page, has anyone considered making it more useful by updating and extending it to be more pertinent to the SDMB?
If the answer is, “that would be nice but we don’t have anyone to do it,” I’ll be happy to help out.
Maybe the answer is “we would love to, but the server couldn’t cope”.
You’re right, and some of the typically-FAQish info is under ‘rules’.
Also, removing links to the non-existent calendar and the disabled member list would be a logical move.
Actually, my thought was that we could help the server. Doesn’t it have to do a lot less thrashing to serve a few pre-coded HTML pages than to run through the databases and serve up all the sticky threads? Think about what would happen if people actually gasp read the FAQ instead of asking the question again!
We are planning to overhaul all of this stuff to make it more user friendly and more custom tailored to each forum area. Just hang on, we’re getting there.
