I’m good with that.
Works for me.
Yeah, go ahead and bite me.
Classy. I was actually pretty gentle.
Anyone with significant objections to the rules proposals in the OP should speak up very soon, because we seem to have reached a consensus on each issue.
Commish-approval on trades: I count it as 8-1 in favor. Once again, while I don’t anticipate missing many weekends, and I’m not opposed to retroactively fixing rosters for trades that are totally non-controversial and everyone’s intentions are clear, folks are encouraged to finished trades sooner rather than later to avoid confusion.
Counting return TDs for DEF/SPs: I count 7-1 in favor, plus a maybe.
Does anyone have an opinion on Beef’s suggestion that we count Punt/Kick Return TDs as 4 points rather 6?
Trading Future Draft Picks: I count 7-1 in favor. Barring a change, I think we’ll implement the following rules:
(1) It’s limited to the next year’s draft (so, 2015 draft picks become available once the 2014 SDMB thread is posted).
(2) We mandate that if such a trade results in someone leaving the draft with fewer than 25 players, we use Beef’s suggestion that they’ll fill out the roster with throwaway players who will be dropped immediately post-draft. Anyway, please be sure to remember that you can’t exit the draft with MORE than 25 players, so acquiring a future draft pick will require you to free up a slot for it one way or another – usually it will be advisable to to include a late-round give-back to your trading partner.
(3) Such a late-round pick will conditional, in the event that the sender does not drop enough players to reach it.
Finally, would people object to to *permitting *trades that include my player to be named later idea?
Ok, we should start to think about nailing down some dates.
The NFL season starts on Thursday, September 5th. I’d like to budget at least 2 full weeks for the draft (it took 11 days last year), which means starting no later than 8/22.
I would tentatively suggest, therefore, the following: we set the cut deadline for the afternoon of Monday, 8/19 (giving people the preceding weekend to think over their cuts). We’d publish the cuts by the next day, at which point the people at the top of the draft can start making selections before the clock starts if they wish (as happened last year).
Is that enough time between the cuts and the draft? Week 3 of the preseason ends on Sunday, 8/25, so so by the time the draft is into the fringe-player territory that will have passed (rosters are cut to 75 on 8/27). Thoughts?
Also, does anyone have any experience setting keepers on Yahoo? If everyone just enters their own keepers, will it set us up to enter the remainder of our draft as we like? Or should I manually enter the keepers as in years past? (Takes an hour or so, not that bad.)
These dates sound good to me.
Yeah those dates sound fine.
I vote 6 points for return touchdowns.
Empty quoting for agreement.
All fine by me.
All of those sound fine with me, I am also ok with players to be named later. I have no strong feelings on the return yards, I’ll happily play with whatever is decided.
Oh, hey, what are safeties worth? They’re normally worth 2 points, but someone at some point made a pretty decent case for them being worth 4 points since you could look at it as 2 points plus a turnover.
I don’t much care, but I thought that was a cool idea. (And for all I know we already adopted this last year.)
There were only 13 safeties scored in every NFL game played last season so I doubt it will make a difference in any game. They usually wind up counting as three points anyway because they normally come from sacks.
Yeah, that was part of the reason it was being advocated for. I was against it, preferring to have actual points mapped 1:1 in fantasy, but someone (VarlosZ? Omni? I forget who) made the compelling case that it was also like a turnover, which convinced me.
The original post was something like “I was so psyched to see my defense score a safety, until I saw it was only worth a lousy 2 points. These things never happen, so what’s the harm in doubling it?”
This may not have even been in this league, though, now that I think about it.
I was the one arguing for it being 4 points, with that logic, although in general I don’t think we should have any attachment to 1:1 mapping in fantasy. I mean, if a QB has a score like 22.14 for a game anyway, does it really matter if some part of that was mapped 1 to 1? It’s all part of an arbitrary scoring system anyway. End results don’t look like real football scores.
That said, only RB/WR touchdowns, short field goals, and extra points use 1:1, and it’s basically a coincidence. A consensus value for the worth of those things would probably end up being near what they are now.
But for that reason I’m hostile towards any argument that just declares that some things should map 1:1. Reduces flexibility and doesn’t really add any sort of authenticity.
If we are going to fix our scoring system, let’s make passing TDs 3 points and other TDs 4. They’re too random.
Varlos’ Zzzzzzz have entered a (provisional) keeper/cut list on Yahoo.
I’d be in favor, FWIW.
Entered my keeper list. Right now my cuts are:
sigh I seriously thought about holding on to Meachem just in case he finally has the huge season I’ve been waiting for for four years. My team sucks.
Wow, that’s a lot of draft picks in what’s probably the weakest draft we’ve ever seen.
I don’t think my cut list will change much between now and Monday, but here it is.
Tentative Cut List
Willis McGahee (DEN - RB)
Ryan Fitzpatrick (TEN - QB)
Brandon Jacobs (SF - RB)
I’m looking to pick up a RB or a QB. I’ve got a surplus of WRs that I’d consider trading including Jacoby Jones, Devon Wylie, Nate Burleson, and Austin Collie (impressive I know). My first round pick this year and next year are also on the block.
Look at that list and tell me you’d keep any of those guys. I’ll probably un-cut Blount if Brandon Bolden gets waived. Same for Turner if someone has a starting RB injury and starts fishing for veterans. Basically those guys are all worthless though. Hell, Donald Jones had to retire due to kidney disease.
