SDMB FF Dynasty League: Year Six

… so I added him.

Just so Senor Beef isn’t the only one:

My Roster; How I Got Them; Other Players; Results, and Thoughts:
Roster

QB

Philip Rivers - 4th round pick in our inaugural draft
Robert Griffin III - 1st round pick in Year 4
Kirk Cousins - Free agent add in Year 4.

RB

Jamaal Charles - Traded for him in Year 4. See Matthew Stafford below.
Adrian Peterson - 3rd pick overall in our inaugural draft.
Alfred Morris - $8 waiver add in Year 4.
Branden Oliver - $7 waiver add this year.
Toby Gerhart - 1st round pick in 2nd year of league
Matt Asiata - 3rd round draft pick this year.
Antone Smith - $21 waiver add this year.
Joseph Randle - Free agent add this year.

WR

Steve Smith Sr. - 2nd round pick in the inaugural draft
Brandon Marshall - trade in Year 1 with RNATB. Marshall/Cooley for Owen Daniels/Josh Morgan
Kelvin Benjamin - 1st round draft pick this year.
Pierre Garcon - Traded for him in Year 4. See Matthew Stafford below.
Percy Harvin - 9th round pick in our inaugural draft
Keenan Allen - 1st round draft pick in Year 5.
Eric Decker - Free agent add in Year 3
Marqise Lee - 2nd round draft pick this year.

TE

Julius Thomas - 3rd round draft pick in Year 5.
Vernon Davis - 18th round pick in our inaugural draft

I’m skipping K and D because I change them so often.

Other Players of Note:

Matt Stafford - 12th round pick in our inaugural draft. Traded him, along with Bilal Powell, in Year 4 for Jamaal Charles and Pierre Garcon. I like that trade, although I’ve been thin at QB ever since.
Justin Forsett - Free agent add in first year. Always liked him, but I dropped him because nobody seemed to give him a chance. Got him again in Year 4. Dropped him again after he never really got a chance. Happy to see his success this year. Sad too.
Beanie Wells - I traded my first round pick in Year 3 (Cam Newton) to dale for him. Ugh.
Mohammed Sanu - a “my guy” from the draft, I lost in a waiver bid because I only went for $1. I don’t think those 3 other dollars would have helped me much. Idiot.

Results:

Year 1 - 3rd place. Most points in league by over 100. A tough loss in the first round negated the high score of everyone in the championship round.
Year 2 - 5th place. 4th most points in the league but 6-8 with most points scored against. Again.
Year 3 - 10th place finish despite 3rd most points in the league. Really frustrating.
Year 4 - Championship! Finally. 2nd most points in the league. 2nd most in points against.
Year 5 - 2nd place finish. 3rd most points in the league.

Things I’m proud of:

I’m pretty competitive in this league, usually in the top 4 in points and one championship. I had some horrible luck in the beginning of the league, but a few breaks since then. I like how I handle the bottom of my roster.

Trading Stafford/Powell for Charles/Garcon. I’ve gotten a lot of mileage from Charles and, although he’s been replaced in the starting lineup, Garcon was a big player for me for awhile.

Trading for Brandon Marshall. It cost me Owen Daniels, but he got hurt right away (sorry about that RNATB).

Not reaching for lottery ticket RB’s. I’ve taken WR’s instead, and Keenan Allen and Kelvin Benjamin have, so far, been pretty good. Instead, I’ve gotten my RB’s off waivers/free agents, like Alfred Morris for $6 which has been huge, and Branden Oliver has been great for a couple weeks. Here’s hoping Antone Smith and Joseph Randle turn into somethings too.

Things I fucked up:

Beanie Wells. A man crush that got the best of me. I could’ve had Jordy Nelson instead, which I would have done because I think Cam Newton isn’t a good passing QB. Killer fuckup.

QB depth. After Rivers, I’m screwed.

Sanu and Forsett would have been really nice to have on my roster. Wish I had stuck with them.

There you have it.

Once again, you’re welcome for AP. Fucker.

Ok, let’s try this again. I’m going to break it down by method of acquisition rather than position:

Inaugural Draft (5)
WR Larry Fitzgerald (1st Round, 10th pick)
WR Calvin Johnson (2nd Round)
TE Greg Olsen (5th Round)
QB Matt Ryan (6th Round)
DEF Baltimore (8th Round – technically I dropped them for one weekend earlier this year before picking them back up as a FA)

Subsequent Drafts (7)
WR Randall Cobb (2011, 3rd Round)
WR Emmanuel Sanders (2011, 4th Round)
WR DeAndre Hopkins (2013, 1st Round)
RB Zac Stacy (2013, 2nd Round)
TE Zach Ertz (2013, 3rd Round)
WR Davante Adams (2014, 2nd Round)
QB Johnny Manziel (2014, 2nd Round)

Trades (10)
WR Michael Crabtree (2009, furt, for Sidney Rice and Vince Young)
RB Jonathan Stewart (2009, see above)
QB Tony Romo (2010, Ellis, for Santonio Holmes)
WR Justin Blackmon (2012, RNATB, for TB Mike Williams)
RB Doug Martin (2012, Petey, for Dez Bryant)
RB Ben Tate (2013, RNATB, for Robert Turbin and Jonathan Baldwin)
RB Reggie Bush (2013, RNATB, for Shane Vereen and Mark Ingram)
QB Cam Newton (2014, dale, for Michael Floyd)
WR Sammy Watkins (2014, RNATB, for Brandin Cooks and 2015 1st Rounder)
K Stephen Gostkowski (2014, Justin, for 3.12 pick [Charles Sims])

Waivers (2)
RB Joique Bell (2012, $4)
RB Benny Cunningham (2013, $13)

Free Agents (1)
DEF Carolina (2013)

I think I did pretty well in our inaugural draft. Even my biggest reach, Greg Olsen, has worked out ok given that he’s been a passable starter all this time (and is actually the highest-scoring TE in the league this year ). This is mostly because I drafted solely for youth at the start. None of my mid-late round guys are still around, but I did get some value in return by trading: Santonio Holmes (7), Kenny Britt (12), Sidney Rice (15), Pierre Garcon (22), and Vince Young (24). Sadly, I did NOT get any value in return for dropping Jordy Nelson (18). :frowning:

I probably have the smallest number of players that come from drafts after our first one. I guess you could throw Blackmon and Watkins into that category since those were basically draft-day swaps, but still. That said, I’ve done ok in the draft, as most of the guys not still on my team were traded rather than just dropped.

By the same token, I’m probably built through trades more than any other team (Hamlet and Beef each have 3 players from trades).

I have not had a lot of success with FAs and waivers. Some guys who were useful for a year or two, and of course DEFs and Ks, but none of the long-term fantasy studs that other teams have occasionally landed. In part this is due to my attachment to the young guys on my roster; for instance, I absolutely would have picked up Anthony Dixon and/or Bryce Brown this weekend, but that would mean either giving up on Zac Stacy already, or deciding that Johnny Manziel wasn’t worth waiting for. I just don’t have space on my roster to take a bunch of fliers on low-probability FAs, which has usually tended to be the case.

Steve Slaton seemed like a great pick in our inaugural draft, because he was in 2011 essentially what Arian Foster has become since then. If I had the foresight to handcuff my pick, I’d have been in much better shape the first few years, and even now still.

The Calvin Johnson one still gets me. He was taken one pick before me in the second round and obviously would’ve been the slam-dunk-fist-pump pick. Instead I got Randy Moss, who I thought would play at least until 34-35, but I think I got one half productive year out of him.

It’s kind of amazing how much of a mess our inaugural draft was. I would really love to do another one with the knowledge I’ve gained now, but I don’t see how you’d do that except to do a mock draft, or to make another dynasty league. Meh.

I’d really like to free up a roster spot, so I’m looking to make a 2-for-1 trade. You can probably get good value here by giving up one guy who’s a little better than the two I send you. Alternately, I’d be amenable to trading a guy in order to move up in next year’s draft.

Players I’m especially looking to package include:

QB Tony Romo
WR Michael Crabtree (still just barely 27 years old, amazingly)
RB Reggie Bush
RB Jonathan Stewart
WR Larry Fitzgerald
RB Zac Stacy (great buy-low opportunity!)
WR DeAndre Hopkins
WR Davante Adams
QB Johnny Manziel
WR Larry Fitzgerald

I’m also not opposed to including guys such as Sammy Watkins or Justin Blackmon if you come up with the right player.

I’m not interested in trading for a veteran unless he’d be a pretty clear upgrade this year over what I’m already starting.

Give me Hopkins. Give him now.

Au contraire. Players I acquired through trade:

Nick Foles
Vincent Jackson
Shane Vereen
Mark Ingram
Martellus Bennett
James Jones
Lamar Miller
Brandin Cooks
Pierre Thomas
Robert Turbin

That is essentially my starting lineup (except Turbin). Basically the only guys of note on my roster who didn’t come from trades are Gio Bernard (draft), Steven Haushka (draft), Danny Woodhead, Julian Edelman (2012 waiver pickups), and Jordan Reed (2013 waiver pickup).

Dennard Robinson having a productive week again, suggesting last week was a fluke.

I drafted him a couple of years ago with my last pick, then proceeded to drop him, and then pick him up again the day he became fantasy-relevant. It’s almost like I had him the whole time except I had a bonus roster slot to use.

Geno Smith has -5.75 on Ellis Dee’s bench. Too bad he didn’t start him today. That’s the biggest negative score I can recall ever seeing in fantasy in some other than a D/ST.

RNATB having an awful first half of the early games. Furt doing almost as badly. 1.25 points out of Russel Wilson. Hopefully furt gets his first win.

I only have one player in all these games.

Gronk is on pace for some sort of record. 37 points with 27 minutes left in the game. I have to assume the Pats will pull him especially given his injury history, but he could go for the best individual fantasy performance ever at this point.

Edit: Woops, wrong thread.

Both my division makes are narrowly projected to lose, so today might be really good for me.

I’m going to overcome a 50 point performance out of Ben Roethelisberger, and RNATB lost. Good day.

Yeah, I consider this a bad beat, but hat’s off to you. Quality win.

Damn. My RB situation is approaching Worst Case Scenario levels for this season, and with Doug Martin and Zac Stacy having disastrous campaigns, things are looking pretty bad long-term, as well.

Therefore, sadly, I’ve got to make Randall Cobb available for trade. I can personally attest to the fact that Cobb is a fantastically enjoyable guy to own – he somehow seems to always give you a better game than you expect. On the rare occasions when he goes for a 3/28, one of the 3 will be a touchdown. He’s just 24, one of the best dynasty assets in the whole league, etc. etc.

Looking for a RB, obviously.

TRENT RICHARDSON

I may even throw in Denard Robinson.

Bobby Rainey? Isn’t Doug Martin getting traded?

Yeah, if Martin got traded out of maybe the worst situation in the league, that would probably be good. OTOH, he’d likely be traded to New England, where he’d put up two monster games a year, at completely random and unpredictable times, while getting about 3 touches per game the rest of the year.

Doesn’t matter. He rolled his ankle in the game today. With the trade deadline on Tuesday, probably that’ll kill any interest from other teams. He’ll just turn into a desiccated husk waiting for things to improve in Tampa.

Damn, this whole situation has me very fantasy-depressed. After struggling at the RB position non-stop since the league started, I thought I finally had the problem licked. By rights I should have. Now I’m back to having monster games from my WRs (Cobb/Sanders/Watkins put up 21.1, 34.1, and 23.2 this week, with Larry Fitzgerald’s 25.5 on the bench), even with my best player injured, while my RBs turn into Fantasy Ebola and cost me games. 10 of the last 12 RBs in my lineup have underperformed their projections. It doesn’t even make me feel better that Sammy Watkins is blowing up, or that I’m crushing it in the Keeper and Auction leagues.

Would it make you feel better Varlos if I talked about how great my team is doing?

Nelson and Thomas are of course two of the top 4 receivers, a great starting duo. Aaron Rodgers has been doing his thing. LeSean McCoy has been a disappointment this year, but not a disaster. But it’s mostly made up for by getting Andre Ellington on the cheap. He’s scoring 20 points a game the last few weeks.

I get Josh Gordon back in a few weeks, at which point I may end up having 3 of the top 5 receivers.

After fairly decent but not great start due to injury, Gronk just flat out beasted today, putting up 37 points.

Andre Holmes may be for real. Carr throws some decent deep balls and even though every site I read in the offseason said he was totally out of the Raiders’ plans, I kept him and he’s been really developing, averaging about 16 points per week for the last 4 weeks.

Andrew Hawkins has been a reliable 12 points per week guy except the two weeks I’ve started him. But it looks like he’s going back up to being consistent with lots of targets.

Allen Robinson has been developing well for a rookie, it seems like he’s going to be the main target of that offense as Bortles develops. If he develops.

Dennard Robinson didn’t just have one fluke productive game against Cleveland, he followed it up with another 100+ yard game.

Martavis Bryant is a project speed/height/strength guy who didn’t even play most of the season, but in the last 2 weeks has put up 11 and 23 points. #2 WR in the Pittsburgh offense could be a high ceiling for him.

Trent Richardson is still historically awful and yet pride demands Indy keep forcing the ball to him, so he’s up there in touch count enough to make him a worthy flex starter.

Dissapointments: Mathews has been injured pretty much the whole season, Jordan Cameron has definitely battled injury issues and just got a concussion, Kenny Britt just isn’t doing very much, Marvin Jones is on IR again, and with Sanu looking so good lately probably doesn’t have much of a future, and they aren’t even trying to use Cordarelle Patterson.

Overall I’m pretty happy with my team, and high ceiling bottom of the roster guys are looking better than they did last year. I’m also on a 5 game winning streak and have the scoring lead. I have a game on RNATB now and I don’t think he’ll catch up if my team keeps playing well. Still a game behind Petey though.

Oh look, Packers bye right when I play Beef, and Demaryius will be on Revis Island.

Ryan Fitzpatrick’s got this shit.

Just noticed something odd. Fitpatrick’s projections for the rest of the year are: 14.4, 13.04, 15.08, 13.38, 0.10, 0.07, 0.06, 0.10.

I guess yahoo is projecting that he loses his job in week 14?

I certainly was. Yeah, it looks like my playoff hopes are a barely-glowing ember at this point. I would have had to start Cooks and Mark Ingram to get the win this week and I wasn’t sold on either in this game. Still, now that the Saints are forcing Cooks the ball again (he was the only wideout on the field several times last night) business might pick up in time to save my season. I do get to play you again, after all.
