I honestly can’t believe I’m about to move into playoff contention. I was ready to write this season off a few weeks ago.
I probably didn’t need to move up five spots to grab Charles Sims in the draft, but I’m glad I did. Even though he was hurt, every sports guy was saying how high the Bucs were on him and how he might start this year. And that’s probably going to happen this week.
He’s not going to start. He might play on third downs, but for now he won’t be more than a change of pace. Even if Martin is traded Rainey will get most of the work.
Omni and Hamlet losing by a combined 3.35 is the luck I needed. Thanks Sunbelt!
Now I have to play the top 3 teams over the next 3 weeks, and then the usual divisional round robin. Gonna need a lot more luck to keep Omni and Hamlet out.
It kinda boggles my mind that anyone would actually trade for Doug Martin. How desperate must a team be that they can’t find someone else to fall down for a couple yards per rushing attempt.
Weird, because I thought that RNATB got the better end of the deal by a large margin. Much depends on your view of Gio, of course, but I think he’s a fine change of pace back in a RBBC, which, while nice, will not end up being an every week starter, which he has been so far this year. Granted he’s young, but I think he’s showing this year that he’s simply not an every down back, and too much of his production has been due to simple overuse. Gio’s upside is much higher (see Carolina game) than Joique Bell’s, of course, but I think he’s never going to reach it.
I do think however, that DeAnde Hopkins will be an every week starter, and Ryan will be a solid QB2 with QB1 upside. Granted VarlosZ gets the immediate high ranked player, I think, in the long run, RNATB got the better end of the deal.
Yeah, this trade could go in a lot of different ways. Could go wrong for either of us, but probably it can only go horribly wrong for me, since it’s really unlikely for all three of RNATB’s players to crash & burn.
My thinking on Bernard – hopeful perhaps – is that his floor is a Darren Sproles type guy. Someone you don’t exactly notice, but who catches a lot of balls and always ends up as the 12-15th best RB, and who’s still really young (22) and has upside from there.
The players I traded away are worth a lot less to me than they are to most players. I love Matt Ryan (and have had him since the inaugural draft :(), but I still have Cam Newton and Tony Romo, plus Manziel as a development project. Likewise D-Hop is great, but I still have Megatron, Cobb, Sammy Watkins, and Emmanuel Sanders (and Justin Blackmon and Larry Fitzgerald and others). So these were guys I could afford to trade away, while I have nothing really comparable to Gio Bernard on my roster at the moment.
I think the trade improves both teams, and so on that basis it’s a good trade. RNATB gets the best of it in absolute value unless you think Gio is going to be a top 10 guy for years to come, which is possible but my gut says not likely. Varlos has WRs to spare, so he won’t feel the loss of Hopkins, although I do like Hopkins a decent bit. Woodhead and Williams don’t have much dynasty value remaining. Matt Ryan will be an 8-10 guy for a few years yet. I don’t follow the Lions much, but my gut says Bell is more valuable than Woodhead or Williams at this point.
He is. Woodhead and Williams were basically throw-ins, it’s basically a 3-for-1 trade. I have both of my IR slots open, so I can stash Woodhead and hopefully he still has his job with SD next season. Williams may or may not be dropped by season’s end for an interesting waiver wire guy. We’ll see how Carolina uses him now that he’s back from injury.
There’s certainly a chance he will be, but so far he’s just been “okay”. 4.1 YPC last year and this year. He’s on pace for just over 1000 yards, and for 50 catches - the latter being slightly fewer than he managed in less snaps last year. I think his rushing opportunities have also been slightly inflated this season because of AJ Green’s absence. Right now he’s the #7 RB in this format, but I don’t think the TD rate is sustainable even if the yardage is.
I started to worry about him the second the Bengals drafted Jeremy Hill. The second round is now basically the first round for running backs, and you don’t take another second round back unless you plan to give him the ball. So I see it as only a matter of time before it’s a 50/50 time share. Hue Jackson basically said as much a few times when he said he wanted to give Hill the ball more and would once he was comfortable with him playing in all game situations. When I drafted him, I thought Bernard would be the kind of explosive player who could put up huge numbers on limited carries (Sprolesian, if you will) but he’s just not that guy. In my experience, if an RB is going to become a stud, it’s already happening by the time he’s in his second year. Don’t get me wrong: it is with huge misgivings that I let Bernard go. Until now I pretty much rebuffed all trade offers for him (there have been at least three) with “fuck you, guy.”
Ultimately, I just couldn’t get past the haul I am getting back. I needed a QB to platoon with Foles far more than I needed another RB. I also needed a long term answer at WR, with Edelman constantly in danger of losing targets (and actually doing so over the last four weeks) and V-Jax unproductive and old. In hindsight, I never should have traded you D-Jax for him though I’m pretty glad I missed out on the Redskins’ QB soap opera. Matt Ryan is obviously a QB1 - he actually has more points than Foles right now - and Hopkins will be very productive for a very long time. He reminds me of Roddy White early in his career, only with slightly more size.
With Mark Ingram back healthy - and with the light having “come on” for him this year (or at the end of last year) - I have one RB that is surplus to requirements. Vereen hasn’t panned out quite as well as I expected (fuck you Belichick) but he’s been a top-25 back in this format. Lamar Miller looks to have the ‘phins starting job locked up long term. Joique is a nice bye-week fill in, and I had no use at all for DeAngelo Williams. I just picked him up off waivers a few weeks ago because he’s a guy who should be on someone’s roster in this format. He’s a bit more valuable to VarlosZ because he already owned J-Stew.
ETA: I wonder if Hamlet’s constant rubbishing of Bernard has gotten to me.
I’m tempted to start Denard Robinson (WR, RB) over Cordarelle Patteson in my WR slot this week, but I think it’s cheesy when people use multiposition designation tags that were created over ambiguity in position to play people out of position, so I won’t.
This is going to be a really tough week for me with the byes, but I’m still a projected favorite. My team is pretty baller.
Tight game with Stringer. I was considering picking up Hoyer and playing him today, so if my margin of loss is less than the gap between them I’ll kick myself.
I need one of those crazy 30 point games that Gronk or Thomas can put up at any time.
