SDMB NFL Pick 'em, Survival, and Salary Cap 2010

I’ll copy most of this OP from last year’s thread.

Pick 'em:
In NFL Pick 'em leagues, each player predicts the outcome of every NFL game. There are three different types, and we run all three. You can join any or all of them.

Straight up: You simply pick the winner of each game, and get a point if correct.

Spread: A spread is determined for a game (like with sports betting), where one team has a certain amount of points given to them, and you have to pick the game with that adjustment taken into account.

Confidence: The most complex one, but in my view also the most fun. There are no spreads, so you pick the winner straight up. But you get a confidence value you can assign to every game, 1 through the number of games being played that weekend, and can only use each number once. So if there are 16 games that weekend, you’ll assign the confidence number 16 to the game where the outcome seems most clear to you, 15 for the next one, all the way down to 1 for the one you’re least sure of. If you pick correctly, the confidence value of your pick is added to your weekly score. If you only play one league, I suggest the confidence league.

Survival:
Each player picks one team that has to win each week. If your picked team fails to win, you’re out for the season. You can only use each team once. Last year we actually ended up doing 2 strikes and you’re out and it kept things more interesting for longer - we’ll probably do that again this year.

There’s also a college pick’em game, but I don’t know anything about college so I’m not going to run the league. If anyone else would like to, by all means go ahead.

These leagues can hold up to 50 players each, so we’re not really at risk for filling up, and you’re competing against the whole league, not one other team per week like fantasy football, so it’s not a big deal if you end up dropping out. I’d like for everyone to play all the way through the season, but it won’t hurt anyone if you don’t, so feel free to sign up if you’re only a little interested.

Salary Cap:
The scoring works like fantasy football, but the way the game works is different.

There are not a limited number of teams because teams do not exclusively own players like in traditional fantasy football. Which means, like pick 'em and survival leagues, the more the merrier.

How it works is that based on past and projected performance, each player in the NFL is assigned a salary. When you add someone to your team, you buy them at this salary.

As their performance changes, their price can go up or down - in the event that it goes up, you can retain them at the price you originally bought them for - and if it goes down you can recover the money. You have a limited amount of cap space to work with, so if you sign Adrian Peterson, he’s going to cost enough that you’ll have to go for some cheap players at other positions.

In effect, you’re trying to get the most value of your players rather than necesarily having the best in raw production at any given position. You can find sleepers who you feel are about to break out and buy them up early for cheap, benefiting from their later better performance for the same price, or you can switch out your players every week based on who you feel has the most favorable matchup relative to their cost, or any combination of strategies.

The scoring rules and roster positions of the league are fixed, and salary updates are automatically provided weekly. There’s no head to head format, the winner is the person who scores the most overall points.

I would suggest using a name in these leagues that either includes your SDMB name or makes reference to your SDMB name so we know who everyone is.

I sent out invites to everyone who was in our league last year, so to rejoin, check the e-mail that yahoo sends e-mail to.

Otherwise, if you would like to join us, go to the yahoo fantasy sports page, or specifically pick 'em and survival and enter the following

Password for all leagues is “cecil”, all lowercase.

Straight up pick 'em Group ID# 22759
Spread pick 'em Group ID# 22760
Confidence pick 'em Group ID# 22762

Survival Group ID# 9475

Salary cap isn’t open yet, I’ll post the league number when it does.

There’s a new option this year - you can run these events through the playoffs. For pick 'em, that means we’ll have a few more weeks to play, but for survival that really throws a monkey wrench in the plans - you’d have to try to save up teams you predicted to be playoff teams to use later. Should we try that option? I think we should. Discuss!

Bugger it, I’m in for Pick 'Em and Survival, and I’ll give some thought to the other two. After my utter failure to participate in this offseason’s mock draft (I forgot I signed up and wound up dumping it on TheBoltEater at the last second), I must redeem my football fandom cred somehow.

Running survival through the postseason sounds interesting…that’s going to leave some very tentative picks some weeks, but it adds a whole new dynamic in making you pay attention to the record, which I haven’t had to do in a survival league before. It’ll throw off my intensive calculations, but the noob says we go for it.

I’ll be back in for Pick’Em and Survival as usual. I’ll see if I can do better than 5th for the another year running in the Pick’Em.

I think running them through the postseason is a good idea. It will make survival that much more interesting.

Is it possible to “reset” the picks going into the playoffs? Anyone that survives into the playoffs would then basically start from scratch with no teams off limits (until you pick them in a playoff week, that is).

I’m back in for Confidence & Survival as Chk Demon once again

I’m back in the Confidence, and Survival leagues and I’ll join the pick’em as well. I’ll be a mix of Toejam’s FFP and Roosh for Confidence.

The sign up page for salary cap football seems to indicate that it’s some sort of new facebook lameness. I don’t know if it’s just that you have an additional option of joining through facebook, or you have to play that way… in any case, the traditional yahoo interface for it isn’t open yet. I probably won’t start a league if facebook is a requirement… maybe. We’ll see.

Salary cap is still listed as a “closed league”, so I guess they won’t be hosting it this year, but instead made it some sort of facebook doohickey. I’m not inclined to take my football stuff to there, but has anyone signed up for it? How does the interface look?

countdown!

Yeah, get your Thursday night picks in. I set the survival league’s deadline at 10am on Sunday, so you don’t have to get it in before the Thursday game, but you might as well take care of it so you don’t forget.

Anyone new can still feel free to sign up. League info is in the OP. The more the merrier.

Kind of last minute, but I’m in. Have fun, pick safe!

I hate the first couple of weeks, that’s usually when I dig the hole I’m trying to climb out of all season.

I can’t believe the first game of the season ended in a push.

I don’t think there should ever be pushes, at least for our purposes. Every spread number should end in .5 (Oh, well; no biggie).

What’s with the weirdness in the regular pick’em rankings?

What weirdness are you talking about?

Just saw this. I missed Thursday but I’d still like to play. This is the first year in some time I won’t be overseas for the season and I aim to milk it for all the entertainment I can get.

ETA: I can’t seem to get in on the Survival league. Did I miss the deadline? I thought I read it was open until Sunday morning.

Three people are listed as tied at #1, and fourteen people are listed as tied at #4, yet all seventeen people picked the Saints to win.

The deadline for picking is Sunday morning, but maybe yahoo has a different deadline for signing up. What’s the error message you get?

Probably has to do with the tiebreakers. Maybe those people picked the Saints to score the most points this week or something like that.
