Don’t forget to get your Thursday picks in. Games start soon.
Picks still due:
Court Jesters
asterion
RealCarmenOfGenius
VarlosZ – The Wrath of Khan
Liquored-Up Idiot Picker
Everyone survived this week. Atlanta/Tampa Bay looked like it’d knock out some people, but Atlanta took the lead at the end. The next few teams are going to tough - few people have any good teams left to pick.
Over the last two weeks we’ve only had one strike in survivor - MadTheSwine with Pittsburgh this week. Everyone else guessed correctly. This competition may end up having some perfect records.
I’m so disappointed I lost in the pick’ems. I def. want the NEXT season to be here so i can play this thing again!
=)
I love these sorts of fantasy league and it’s fun playing with the people i recognized.
*My current goal is to finish in the top 10 in the Fantasy Confidence league, I don’t know much football but I get by.
If Tennessee loses, we are all screwed.
3 of us would still be alive due to it being our first strike, but everyone would get a strike.
Whew, that was close.
Having a pretty good week. Damn you Steelers, if only I’d stuck to my guns!
This.
Oh shit when I switched my survival pick from Arizona to Denver, I didn’t know that Charlie Frye would be starting for Oakland.
NEVER BET AGAINST CHARLIE FRYE! HE’S TOO GOOD!
Son of a goat whore. My switch to Denver from Arizona was a last minute thing - about 10 minutes before the game I realized I forgot to plot out my picks for the rest of the season, so I did a quick “Uh, Arionza plays St. Louis again later, right? Yeah… Okay, use someone else now… Aha Denver!”
And then they lose to Charlie Frye by a point!
!!!
I was so close to a perfect season, I had good teams saved up
Isotopes lost too with Seattle which means Gray Ghost is the only perfect record left. Who is that?
I’m having a pretty good year in these leagues. Tied for second in survival, and I’m in first place in the pick em and confidence pools, and second in the spread. I was way behind on spread, but I managed to make up 4 games on Omni so far going into the MNF game, putting me possibly within reach, down by 2 with 2 weeks to go.
Saving New Orleans this long in survival and then having them lose to TB… that’s gotta sting.
Congratulations to Gray Ghost, he wins the survival competition. He has made it to week 16 without a strike and so no one could catch up to him.
We have 4 other people still active with one strike, with 4 having been eliminated this week - three who picked NO, and one who didn’t make a pick.
Since there are still tiebreakers in play for the people still alive, I can’t post the overall results yet, but I did want to congratulate Gray Ghost on his win.
Does anyone know what the pick 'em score for any “experts” are? I know lots of NFL shows have running competitions between their commentators where they run a league like our pick 'em league, and I’m wondering how we’re doing compared to them. I know Inside The NFL does this at beattheinsiders.com but they want me to register to see their scores and I’m too lazy. But I’m curious to see what the win-loss record for any “expert” keeping track of themselves is.
Aha. For inside the NFL anyway I found the info elsewhere. Cris Collinsworth, 155-69, Warren Sapp 151-73, Phil Simms 142-82.
But then I realized the scores aren’t directly comparable. 155+69=224 points, and there have been 240 games played. And I realized - oh, right, Collinsworth can’t pick the SNF game for silly reasons, so none of them do. And my record in the league is 158-68, but that’s with the worst week dropped, so I had to go back and figure out that I dropped week 8, with 7 points out of 13 games, so my record is actually 165-74, which is 239 games since I forgot to pick one of the Thursday games.
So then it’s 155-69 vs 165-74, which is 69.19% vs vs 69.03%, so Collinsworth beats me slightly, although it’s not directly comparable since they are leaving out a group of games (SNF games) that tend to be more competitive and harder to pick than average. If you add in the game I forgot to pick (NYJ vs BUF Thursday game) which I would’ve picked correctly had I remembered to (I remember deciding who I liked, but forgetting to actually log in to yahoo to set it), my winning percentage goes to 69.16%, which almost exactly ties Collinsworth.
Anyway, if you have some sort of expert record handy - a sportswriter, another show, whatever, please post it. I’m curious to see how we compare.
Thanks for the congratulations. I just wanted to say thanks for publicizing the login info for the assorted survival and pick 'em leagues. All of them have been tremendous fun and participating in them has forced me to deepen my knowledge of professional football. They’ve also convinced me never to take up sports betting.
Oh, and ~70% is pretty damn impressive, SenorBeef. King Kaufmann at Salon usually has an article where he writes how his picks went. Bill Simmons was doing very well ATS—at least he’s beating his wife this year.
And now I see that Kaufman’s column is no more. Too bad, it and “ask the Pilot” were the only reasons I had for going to Salon.
This link at ESPN.com shows their braintrust’s NFL picks. I’m surprised at how well Accuscore has done.
Well check that out, I’m doing better than every one of the highly paid football “experts” at ESPN, by as much as 18 games. I’m tied with Accuscore (if you count the game I didn’t pick, but intended to pick the eventual winner as a point for me).
Which isn’t surprising, since most football commentators don’t know a whole lot about football, they just know how to spout cliches at each other. The only football commentators that I’m confident actually know something about the game (and I mean the guys who are paid to be on TV) and give commentary on news shows, rather than game announcers, are Chris Collinsworth and Mike Mayock.
It’s too bad yahoo doesn’t show rank/percentile in pick em games like it does in salary cap leagues. I’d like to see how I stack up against the general yahoo population. It has been a pretty good year.
Correction, I’m 18 games ahead of Jaworski who doesn’t pick MNF games, so it’s not a fair comparison. I’m 11 games ahead of the next lowest guy.
