SDMB South Beach Diet Devotees - What do you eat on the run?

Been kicking butt on South Beach since early December. I cheated a bit recently and I want to go back to Phase I for a couple weeks to get rid of some sugar cravings.

My biggest problem sticking to this diet is that I tend to get out of work late and get dinners on the run. Usually I grab something in Penn Station and eat it on the train on my way home. My train ride is usually an hour an half, followed by 20-30 minutes of driving, so waiting until I get home to eat is usually a problem. I usually need something to tide me over.

I’m trying to avoid buying low-carb nutrition bars because they are expensive as hell and I’m not sure they’re entirely compatible with the diet. But they’re easy and fast, so I tend to pick one or two up when I’m in a mad dash for a train.

Some other things I sometimes pick up on the run:

  • Small containers of cottage cheese (dumping a packet of Equal in it makes it a bit more palatable, IMHO
  • 1/4 lb. of cold cuts from the deli
  • Hard-boiled eggs - Sometimes convenience stores sell these in 2-packs
  • Omelets on the run - Most any place that will make an egg sandwich for you will also make eggs and put them in a little styrofoam “go container” for you.
  • Small bags of pistachios or cashews

What else do fellow South Beachers eat on the run?

Lots of places have take out salads with a good amount of deli meat, eggs and cheese. Beef Jerky is also a good snack to keep the hunger away for a while.

There are also those little individually wrapped cheeses in wax, and the light Laughing Cow cheese, which is pretty easy to find now that the diet is popular.

You realize, of course, that you’re spending a fortune on this stuff. I commuted into the city from LI for many years, and am very familiar with the “Penn Station/Deli Diet.”

Do you have a refrigerator at your workplace? Prepare your snacks at home and take them with you each morning. That way you don’t have to waste time/money on the way home and possibly go off the diet in the process. And you have a lot more control over your diet if you plan ahead, rather than grabbing something when you’re hungry.
