SDMB Style Tweaker/Fixer (Userscript)

For me (and looking at the code), the thread titles on the subscription page are the same size as the thread titles on the forums in general. Is this not what you see?

Or are you just saying you want thread titles to be the same size as the text in posts?

Pretty much. My control panel options are about post-text size, the thread titles in the list of subscribed threads is noticeably smaller.

I’m discussing what I see in Chrome on http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/subscription.php

Ahh, thanks.

Thanks for doing this, BigT.

Excuse what is probably a really stupid question:

Does this mean the script will work on IE WITHOUT TamperMonkey? Or that you simply can’t run the script on IE?

The script wont run without a browser addon and TamperMonkey isn’t compatible with IE. Another addon called TrixIE is made for IE and will run userscripts. I’ve never tried it but it’s open source and well reviewed.

Thank you for the answer!

Okay, so I got and installed Trixie, and put BigT’s script into …/Trixie/scripts. If I open “manage addons” under IE Tools, it shows Trixie is there and also Trixie Options, and both show as enabled.

But what do I do then? There doesn’t seem to be anything that looks like a “load/run” this script button, or browse to find the script you want or any obvious ‘do this next’ type thing.

If I just use Windows explore to go to the .js file directly and click on it, first it warns me about unknown publisher (fine, click past that) and a window pops up labeled “Windows Script Host” saying “syntax error” and “Microsoft Jscript compilation error” plus a few more lines of data.

So… and I doing it wrong, as in, I shouldn’t click on the .js file at all? I actually do need to do something inside the IE/Trixie options?

Or am I doing it right, and it mean the script simply isn’t compatible with my IE or whatever, and that’s that?

Which is fine, I don’t expect anyone to rewrite the script because I cling to an outdated browser. My bad. I just don’t know which level I’m failing on, if you see what I mean.

Sorry, disregard the above. I discovered if I actually use the ‘Tools’ command on the Tool Bar (which I normally have turned off) it does, in fact, have a ‘Trixie options’ button to click. Which opens a screen that shows there are no scripts. And there’s a reload button…which shows the same lack of scripts after clicking it.

So… I have reached the conclusion that what I am trying to do is beyond my level of skill, and I will turn instead to learning to love big blue bars and giant red Reply buttons.

I can do this. I learned to love broccoli, after all.

What am I doing wrong? I don’t have a quote button anymore. Or multiquote. Or edit.

You’ve encountered why I didn’t bother supporting Internet Explorer. If someone finds a userscript engine for IE that works, maybe I’ll work with it.

MIS: I’m unsure of what your issue is, I’m afraid. And I’m not currently up to troubleshoot. Maybe see if changing the zoom settings helps?

You mean zooming in and out?

My issue is that there are no buttons visible except for the reply button. If it helps, I’m on Firefox.

I did notice that the add-on breaks if zoom in too far (as the site switches to mobile mode when you do that.) So try zooming out to see if that is the problem.

I also have no idea why it would affect the multi quote button, since I didn’t touch it other than to remove the text.

I’m sorry I’m not more helpful right now. I’m not feeling well at all.

I guess I’ll just wait for TPTB to come to their sense and give us the choice to use the old format.

You mention having problems with the buttons in the other thread. Does that mean the buttons don’t appear even without my userscript turned on?

If so, that sounds like some issue with your computer not letting the buttons come through. I did have that happen once, but I refreshed and the buttons were there. It’s even happened before the update with buttons or smileys in text boxes. But always a refresh fixed it.

0.7 is out to fix the two issues I noticed since TPTB updates the site (invisible page numbers and hard to read text on the Reply/New Thread buttons), and also to make boxes inside of quotes not overlap other quotes.

.7 is looking good; thanks for updates.

Something’s gone funny with highlighted text, the letters are invisible as you select them, so it’s purple-on-purple.

Ah. Sorry. I see what happened. I changed the highlight color a bit, and accidentally changed the text color on Firefox when I meant to only change the background color.

Should be fixed in 0.7.1

(Also noticed something weird: your highlight color isn’t the same shade as mine, and neither are the exact shade I coded for (#ACE). I guess color profile stuff?)

Maybe. I never got the bright green everyone else was complaining about. I have a browser theme that probably overrides those defaults.

Ah, that explains what happened to me last night. It’s all fixed now. I only got that bright green once or twice, then it went away. I’m not using any themes for Firefox, though.
