SDMB usernames - what's the first thing you think of?

Yep, pretty sure. Although in one of those where’d-your-name-come-from threads, I said (tongue in cheek) that I was from the land of Danthe.

Whenever I see dantheman I start thinking I have multiple personalities.

(And although we’re apparently from the same town, no, that’s not me. )

Well, dantheman, every time I see your name, I picture you as John Larroquette (sp?) playing Dan Fielding on “Night Court”.

Oh, and Larry Mudd? This:

is probably the most disturbing thing I’ve read on here in a while. Then I start thinking about it and it makes me giggle.

celestina makes me think of Tinkerbelle. As portrayed by Julia Roberts in “Hook”. Smartass, but funny.
OpalCat makes me think of the Cheshire Cat with opal colors on its fur.
sidle’s user name makes me think of John Wayne walking into a bar. I know, it’s weird. She neither looks like John Wayne, nor does she walk like him. (Although I did meet her in a bar!:))
pbrtallboy makes me think BAD HANGOVER.
matt_mcl makes me think of a guy in a kilt. I don’t know his last name, but I keep thinking it’s got to have some Scottish origin.
Rue de Day makes me think of my Uncle Charlie, who had some of the best. stories. EVER.
Fairy Chat Mom makes me think she’s celestina’s fairy boss, but in a college-dorm, resident advisor kind of way.
scott evil makes me think of Seth Green. Mmm…Seth Green.
Slainte makes me think of the Great Guinness Toast. Mmm…Guinness.
Pezpunk makes me think of a Pez dispenser with a mohawk.
broccoli! makes me think of the Dana Carvey routine. Every time, I have to sing the entire friggin’ song.
Zebra just makes me think twisted things, since he always seems to pop up after me with sly, dirty comments.

Eh… I might want an explanation of the erislover explanation.

Slainte reminds me of TGI Fridays. Or is it Bennigan’s?

The mental image of matt in a kilt is a frightening one, to say the very least. :stuck_out_tongue:

Why do you think I chose this user name?

Mmmmm… Seth Green.

scott evil reminds me of the president.

“He is a scott … of evil.”

LaurAnge doesn’t make me think of an orange (l’orange). I think of her angelic face (ange = angel).

matt_mcl makes me think of a huge queen prancing around metro stations taking digital pics. (I’ve accompanied him.)

Charmian used to make me think of toilet paper, but now that I’ve met her, I think of a gorgeous, stunning woman.

detop makes me wonder who’s debottom. :stuck_out_tongue:

OpalCat makes me think of two things: a beautiful cat stretching after a nap, and the “Hi, Opal!” in MST3K’s short “The Home Economics Story.” (Yes, Opal’s been immortalized.)

Eonwe makes me think of the things I’ll never get to do to him.

Oh, a wise guy, huh?

Cartooniverse reminds me of an even-more-buff Johnny Bravo. And in animation! I never think of him as a real-life person!

Ogre used to remind me of a grotesque, but kindly, monster that handed out candy to people on street corners, but now that I’ve met him in person, he’s simply a kindly monster. That is nowhere near an ogre. [sub][sup]Can I get a woo-hoo here?![/sub][/sup]

Mullinator brings on thoughts of a big, hulking, delightful giant. Sweet and all cuddly. Sort of like a stuffed grizzly bear, but really smart.

I also used to think of the Jetson’s dog, not with astro, but with astroboy14. Don’t know why I didn’t think of that with the other one.

And for some reason, I still think of a little, bitty doll (like a "Little Kiddlesup[/sup] )when I see the name jarbabyj. Not being a Star Wars fan or anything, that’s the first thing I think of. And yes, I know her name isn’t patterned after JarJar Binks. But some people used to think so.

Ha ha! Me too!

Well, I know LaurAnge’s first name is Lauren, so I thought it stood for Lauren and somethng starting with “Ange” (not necessarily her middle name)… maybe Lauren Angelique? Sounds pretty enough.

And as for MST3K… I give up. I’ve seen references to this around the boards, and I never can figure out what it means. Can comeone please tell me? (no, I’m not cool and in the know :p)

As to the OP:

broccoli! makes me think of those long-ago days when my friend Daniel would get on the piano and pound out a made-up song with the lyrics:

(not really the best song lyrics, but he was a kid back then)

scott evil always makes me think of the Austin Powers movies. (as well as the time when my brother and I made our mom watch the first one… she was very horrified)

ResIpsaLoquitor makes me think of this illustration in a book I read some years ago: the book was about funny things that happened in the law courts across Canada, and for some reason, “res ipsa loquitor” was misheard as “raise your hips and lock the door.” Very funny image.

LolaCocaCola makes me think of that Kinks song.

F_X

It’s funny - I don’t think anything special about the usernames themselves, much like I don’t speculate about the given names of the people I know IRL. I wouldn’t remember the catchiest of usernames.

For me, it’s more of what I know about them as posters that makes me remember the username - most of the time I glance at a person’s name before reading their post / OP and I know where they’re from, gender, what they do for a living, their stance on certain hot button issues, and what I can expect from their posts - humor, respect, researched reponse, on-topic cites…overreaction, closed-minded claptrap, style points only, etc. :stuck_out_tongue:

[sub]As for my name - a friend at LucasArts told me the name of the upcoming villian in the next Star Wars movie way back right about the time I signed up, so I went with it, being a Star Wars fan. Kinda dorky and I’ve thought about changing it, except I hope someday in some thread someone will recognize it the way I recognize other posters’ identities, so I may as well leave it be…[/sub]

It refers to the one of the ‘initiation’ ceremonies into Discordianism from Robert Shea and Robert A. Wilson’s book, Illuminatus! (which I highly recommend).

Whenever I see iampuanha (sp.?) I think of a piranha.

Scylla I envision as a little guy in a rowboat, sculling.

And when I see iampunha, I think of Simon and Garfunkel. “iampunha, my old friend… I’ve come to talk to you again…”

I think about how much my username sucks.

First impressions of people in this thread . . . some of these have changed some as the imagery has evolved, or as I’ve learned things about certain posters (age, sex, occupation, etc.). Some of it is kinda weird–I truly hope nobody gets offended. So, anyway:

Go alien: An Aliens Alien drooling acid onto a Japanese board game across from a confounded looking Sigourney Weaver.

dantheman: Dan Conners (Connors), AKA John Goodman.

Mycroft Holmes: The Attorney General dressed up in a Sherlock hat and coat, holding one of those long-stemmed English detective pipes–I don’t know what they’re called.

Neidhart: A big (as in powerful) goofy looking guy with enormous calf muscles–I know a guy like this who has a name very similar to Neidhart.

p@cific@812: A phone company logo always pops into my head.

astro: The Jetson’s dog.

superbee: A giant bee.

celestina: A beautiful angel with diaphonous wings and a golden halo which matches her shiny golden angel prom dress. Alternately, a fairy (the forest spirit kind). Alternately Glen Danzig, because he sings a similarly titled song. Alternately a box of tea (I guess I’m thinking of Celestial Seasons here). All these images sort of appear in quick succession when I see the name.

gatospescado: I know it’s Spanish (catfish?), but the words to me sort of resemble gestapo and strappado. What I think of is an evil Nazi doctor about to interrogate somebody in the dungeon of a German castle. “Vee haf vays of making you talk, Dr. Jones . . .”

Semp: The “other Stooge,” dressed in the uniform of a certain branch of American military service.

Anthracite: There’s an image for this name that’s just out of my grasp–what does this name mean, anyway?

imthjckaz: An ass (the animal, not the body part). Since I’ve read the story of this handle, though, I’m picturing a kid fighting with his siblings.

Ross: A slightly odd paleontologist (sorry), and now I picture him wearing a kilt.

cmkeller: This kid I know who worked for a Keller Ambulance Service/Keller Surgical Supply.

Forbin: A big muscular viking type wearing a metal helmet and animal furs that fail to cover his massive chest, like the barbarian in a Boris Vallejos painting or something. I know somebody who had a Dungeons and Dragons character with this name, thus the imagery.

Buck The Diver: A guy in one of those old diving suits and helmets like Cuba Gooding Junior and Robert DeNiro wore in that movie; alternately the album cover to Ronnie James Dio’s Holy Diver.

Hastur: Same as Antrhacite.

Deadly Nightlight: There’s a type of illustration I’ve seen in both children’s and adult books–a nightlight plugged into the wall, casting weird shadows and wedges of light across a room, usually a little kid’s room, and there’s a sense of menace because you know the goblins are about to open the closet door and the tentacles are about to slither out from under the bed . . .

Fionn: Fionna (sp?) Apple.

TVGuy: Pictures I’ve seen of a television repair man (I’ve never seen one in real life).

Sublight: Diagrams from science and science fiction books, or somebody (like Spock or Data) reading such things. I guess I must have seen somebody drop from hyperspace to “sub-light speed” or something.

Larry Mudd: The Star Trek conman.

Already in Use: Somebody sitting behind a computer, repeatedly trying to register at some board, and repeatedly getting a message that says the desired screen name is already in use.

Seven: Brad Pitt in a dirty coat. The killer dildo. Morgan Freeman running down the hall of a seedy apartment building (looks like the cheap motel I used to live in). A blood-stained wall. Kevin Spacey explaining why the fat and stupid and greedy and lustful must die. That box.

Zweisamkeit: Various people I know in RL or from TV that are of Central European descent. Like that guy with no vowels in his name who worked for President Carter (I think), Brczynski or whatever–I’ve seen him on the tube talking about hostages in Iran (twenty years ago).

TV Time: Sort of like TVGuy.

c_carol: blond forklift driver–I know a Carol in real life.

Asylum: The cover of Iron Maiden’s Piece of Mind, where Eddie’s all chained up in his padded cell in the asylum, looking pretty damn menacing despite the evidence that he’d recently been lobotomized.

Skerri: An amalgam of various Kerrys, Sherrys, and Carries I’ve met.

scott evil: “But Dad, I don’t want to take over the world. No, Dad. No. You’re stupid.” Dr. Evil’s son from the Austin Powers movies.

Silky Threat: A soft red glow outlines the woman’s body. Pan up her voluptuous physique and zoom in on her hands and wrists, which are hooked into gaps of the elaborately carved headboard. Cut to the dark man; zoom in on his hands, which are holding a long silk scarf. Is it to tie her arms to the bed for some kinky bondage game, or is it for her neck? Spooky music. Roll credits. Or something like that.

Green Bean: I think of a green bean; happy memories of me in my grandma’s garden.

Flamsterette_X: At first I just saw a grill, but since that’s evolved into an informercial where Ron Jeremy and some women with too much makeup and enormous silicone-enhanced breasts are trying to sell me some new-fangled hi-tech miniature gas grille for three easy installments of nineteen-ninety-five, MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express all welcome. I guess Flamsterette sounded like a grill to me, and the X brought in the porn element, and . . . this is imagery that’s slowly evolved.

Dooku: A very cool and menacing Christopher Lee brandishing a light saber.

booklover: Various fellow bibliophiles that I’ve met or worked with at the library. Nice, and studious-looking.

I should say “first impressions from people’s names.” The above is just imagery that springs (or sprang) to mind when I see (first saw) their handles. My first impressions of the people themselves, from their posts, is often different.
