Go for it. I don’t seem to be having any more luck than Lobsang did. I don’t have the latest patch either, so I doubt that was the problem. Might just be too much noise between here and the Isle of Man.
More luck with that one. but the ping is over 200. it’s dowloading a file so i’M nit in yet.
I’m in.
the lag is too great. I’ll stick it out though.
That was good for a while, but I was getting so much lag I couldn’t move at times. Fun while the good connection lasted, though.
Sorry about the lag guys, I have a broadband connection and a good gaming computer, not sure why the lag is there. Bit embarassing really. Fun though, even with lag you all are killin me left and right. (Apollyon btw)
Is it because of the distance between us?
all the low lag servers on my list were uk servers.
if that is the case then an sdmb server is doomed to be high lag (unless everyone happens to be really close)
Dang!
3 hours late!
When are you going to try again?
There was too much lag (by the time the server registers that you fired your weapon the target is long gone. that is an absolute fun-killer for such a real-time fast paced game as ut2004). unless I can get some uk and irish dopers to participate it won’t be worth it.
I’ll do some research into lag and how to get it actually working, and then bump this thread.
Anyone else who has successfully made a server with a good ping for all is welcome to try.
For me I mean.
A SD ut2004 seems only feasable for geographically close dopers. unless I am wrong about geography deciding lag.
Why?
If it’s in the game somehow (limits on who can access what servers), I don’t see it. I play on UK servers from time to time/
I’m available at odd hours- give it a try.
Where do you access these UK servers from? (typically I have pressed ‘new thread’ before checking your location)
I get an average ping of 40 when I sort the list in order of ping and on casual glance mose of these servers are UK servers, this is why I assume geographical closeness is a big factor. That and the fact that it is known that electronic communication over distances similar to that between UK and USA has a noticeable delay. You only have to watch the news and see the awkward delay between the UK based anchorman asking a question and the US based correspondent answering it.
Having said that, I’ll give it another try next time I am working nights. that will be friday night (about 2am British Summer Time)
Lobsang,
The Internet’s major medium is wire- copper or optical cable, or direct line-of-sight microwave transmission. These are the methods used by the phone companies.
The reason for the delay on television signals is that they are bounced off of a satellite approximately 23,500 miles up. The basic lag in the signal is on the order of .4 second, or IIRC a ping of 400. Internet communication is different from TV because of this.
I could be wrong, but I think that it doesn’t matter where in the world you are, as long as there is no satellite link in your connection you should be OK.
I’m connected to a Norwegian server right now. I was on a Russian one a little while ago (I think it was Russian…)
Would that be 9pm EST? I think the difference is 5 hours. I can look for you, just pick a place to meet. The odd server I drop by often is called Flatliner’s BitchSlap.
The IOM’s main connection with the rest of the world is via that line of sight microwave thingy.
The difference is 5 hours but I get confused about summer offsets so I am not sure if it becomes 6 or 4, or stays at 5. but now that I think about it it should stay at 5, because why would one country go the wrong way?? :smack:
So yeah, it will be 9pm on the east coast.
My connection is 500kb ADSL.
Also my UT2004 has a habit of crashing in the middle of an online game. It has me worried because I never remember it crashing on my desktop pc with a geforce 4 4600 underclocked to 250MHz (because it was overheating). but it does crash on the P4 3GHz laptop with a Geforce Go 5700. (no other games have crashed yet though)
damn, I meant to remove the quoted text.
Having wandered in, I have to admit not understanding a single thing that’s been said in this thread. :wandering out:
Buy the game. It’s the most legal fun you can have with your clothes on… and… a copy of the game.
Even losing can be fun. I’ve lost more onslaught games than I’ve won, but I’ve sure had fun defending the nodes until the dying seconds.
Oh, it’s a game. Well, since I haven’t owned a game platform since my Atari 2600, I doubt I’ll bite, but at least I’m slightly less in the dark than I was before.
