I haven’t tried that tape, but just wanted to say that exercise is just so essential to any weight loss program. You will be so amazed at the difference in a few weeks.
One good thing I did last week was go see my new PCP finally, so that I can fill up on asthma meds. He wants me to start working with a pulmonologist. When I see the pulmonologist, I am going to tell him that the goal is to start running again…I don’t care if I have to buy a nebulizer to do it.
239/216.5/144
I also have asthma (exercise is a trigger, among others) and I find that it gradually gets less sensitive as I go along. A good inhaler used before the activity is begun is a must, and sometimes I do a breathing treatment afterwards as well.
Checking back in:
261/254/175 (hah! 200 would be a 20+ year low). Atkins. No trouble sticking to it. So far. Will consider more exercise when I’ve dropped a stone or two. After pushing my broken-down motorbike the other night I thought my heart was going to break out through my ribs. Scary.
Hope everyone had a good weekend.
I had one of those Subway Atkins wraps the other night, (couldn’t help myself, the commercials are on every time I turn on the TV, and there’s a Subway right next to the grocery store). I got the turkey and bacon one - it was pretty good.
250/190/140-ish
Well I started the Couch to 5K thingy and I love it! My knees don’t hurt at all, and I have that “good pain” in my thighs and butt. And I have a lot more energy (I was actually looking forward to getting up early this morning to workout. I have never done this in my life!)
Hi y’all. I don’t know what I weigh right now; we have been cleaning and cleaning (first the yard, then the garage) for most of the last two weeks, so while I know I’ve been getting exercise, it’s been more the anaerobic kind (lifting, grunting, etc.) and I can’t be lightheaded or foggy when operating powertools, so I have not hesitated to eat until I’m full (I am always hungry if I stay under 1600 calories, no matter what they are). But I now have the treadmill set up in a permanent spot in the garage, with music and a TV/VCR. And we did a massive Trader Joe’s/CostCo spree and are now swimming in vegetables (this will last us about a week).
Didn’t swim today, but I did walk 2 miles on the indoor track. I still haven’t weighed in, so flog me later.
I fell off the wagon this weekend, and had pizza with the wife Saturday night. I’m regretting it today, because the carbo craving is nearly unbearable. I’m hanging in, however.
My neighbor, a commercial fisherman, gave me a 5 lb box of frozen scallops at Christmas. Anyone have an Atkins-friendly recipe I can use to fix them?
Scallops…yummy.
You could saute them in some garlic butter, or better yet, wrap each one in a piece of bacon and cook them in the oven till done, about 30 minutes at 350. Then stick them under the broiler for about 2-3 minutes so the bacon gets crisp.
I went to the Y this morning, and walked 2 miles on the indoor track instead of swimming. This track is short, so 15 laps is 1 mile. My mind wanders, so I suck at keeping track mentally, and I count on my fingers.
This old bat kept watch of me all morning, and at lap 22, stopped me and started to give me hell for showing the “shocker” gesture.
“What are you talking about?”
“The shocker. It’s obscene!”
“You mean my left hand? I’m counting my laps, and I’m a computer geek, and I do it in binary so I can do it on one hand.” (extended pinky, middle, and index fingers)
“Well, you shouldn’t do that. It’s obscene.”
“You want obscene? Get bent.”
I couldn’t handle the Atkins thing. I’m back to carbing, but I vow to stop fixing a whole family-sized box of macaroni and cheese for myself. I’ll keep it within normal limits. I only have 10 lbs to lose, so I think I can have some carbs, right? How many grams a day can I do?
I just started doing the BodyShaping workout on ESPN2 at 4:00 AM. I figure 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. Is that enough? I’m also doing a weight training program, which is aboug 15 minutes of dumbbell exercises.
Tell me more about Ketosis. What is the “taste in the mouth” someone spoke of? What is with the strips? What does the taste “taste” like?
Kalhoun - my wife couldn’t handle Atkins either, but she’s able to manage South Beach ok. SB is another low-carb diet, but a lot more flexible than Atkins, at least after the first two weeks.
I’m back up to 175 after my NYC weekend, but it was worth it. Time to be good and make those 3 pounds go away again.
The taste is something I don’t know how to describe, but it’s one of the first indicators of ketosis. Sort of a permanent, low-grade stale taste.
The test strips are for urine testing. When you reach ketosis, your urine becomes
more acidic, and will cause a test strip to turn colors. If you’re metabolizing mostly carbs, this won’t happen. I use Ketostix, produces by Bayer Labs, but there are other brands that will also do the job.
Kal, I forgot to add that Atkins’ book and the website both have info on the taste and the urine testing.
I forgot to check in after my weigh in Thursday but I am happy to report that as of last Thursday I was 198.8. Whee!
And the numbers on the scale have been going down all week. That pleases me to no end but for some reason I feel like I’m getting fatter. I can’t really explain it at all except that I don’t feel one bit smaller. I feel the same, or bigger. This feeling is driving me nuts too. What good do the numbers do if I still feel fat?
I have a feeling it’s because I’m not getting nearly enough activity in but I am to the point where I can’t stand walking indoors anymore. My birthday is this week so I’m telling everyone I want a yoga dvd and a bellydancing dvd. Maybe that’ll get me back into the swing of things.
I ran 16 miles on Sunday.
I know I’ve lost some water weight. My clothes are fitting more loosely. But all my stomach could handle after the run, and most of yesterday, were high glycemic index carbish type stuff (and salt. I wanted salt).
I decided it was better to listen to my body. I’ve gotta be good to it for the next 6 weeks so it will get me through my marathon.
It could be that you’re bloated. Is it close to that time of the month or have you been drinking a lot of pop or alcohol? Fruit juices can also make some people bloat.
vunderbob, you’re hilarious
What I want to know is how a 60-something bluehair from the buckle of the southern Bible Belt would even know what a shocker is…
BiblioCat, I finally jumped on the scales at the Y this morning. Fully dressed, and with pockets loaded, I checked in at 319. I was happy, because my personal estimate was about 10 lbs heavier. Also, this is week #3 of the Atkins induction, FWIW.
Some of you have number1/number2/number3 in your posts. What is that?
Where you were/Where you are/where you want to be.
Seems I’m stalled. I’ve been playing with the same three pounds for about two weeks now, and I’m getting annoyed. I know I look great though, but I’m not looking great enough.
Starting weight/current weight/goal weight.
I’ve been stuck at 190 for over a week now. I think my scale is mocking me. I’ve been so good, and it’s not moving. I’ll give it another couple of days and then the scale is sleeping with the fishes.
