SDMB Weight Loss Club, October

[points and laughs]Ha, ha![/points and laughs] Now you know what it feels like to be me.

I’ve only gotten one workout in this week, but plan to get in at least two more. I think all you sick people are rubbing off on me. On Monday I think I had a gall bladder attack. At least that’s what my mom thinks it was and she’s kind of an expert on gall bladders (she claims she used to be able to feel the stones clinking around in hers before she had it taken out). But I felt better yesterday and I’m doing okay so far today.

Yeah, and wow, it sucks! gives yellowval a noogie

Seriously, I hope it turns out to be nothing. And Khadaji, I hope you’ve found the right answer. You’ve been puzzled by this for a really long time.

Come on, man, just break through that wall! I’m sick of looking at it.

I’ll be kicking and punching it extra hard tonight.

Did another 25 tonight. Seem to have had less vertigo tonight. It is hard to measure. In any case, at least I’m back.

Room for one more?

I’m watching calories and working out (google “Crossfit for beginners” for an idea of what I’m doing). So far I’m down about 2 pounds in a week, which is just perfect for me. Really I want to get fit more than anything, although I definitely need to lose weight.

Welcome, Drain Bead! Sorry about the lynch thing.

Welcome to the club Drain Bead!

Six months ago, it would have been too crowded to let in someone else. But due to successes around here, there’s a lot less bulk; so yeah, there’s room for you, too!

As for me, fortunately my infection is cleared up. Unfortunately, my doctor’s schedule is such that he can’t get me in to get this stone removed until the 30th!! So unless something else opens up before then (like if there’s a cancellation), I’m kind of stuck in limbo until then. After that, I’ll have about five days recovery time, then I should be “back to normal” (or what passes for normal in My World).

Welcome, Drain Bead!

I googled that, but couldn’t find the home page.

But what’s it like? Is it something that you love enough that you’ll stick with it? That’s really important.

Congratulations on your plateau tdn! No, I’m not being sarcastic, I really mean that.

This is a great place for you to be. You can practice maintenance while you’re here. I know you want to lose more but your body is changing. You’re building muscle, losing fat all those things. I think a little plateau here and there is a good challenge to your lifestyle changes.

Look at yourself in the mirror. Look at your before and after pictures if you have them. Now, be happy with your body today. Be grateful for how it’s served you all these years. Love yourself, right now, at 220. Walk with your shoulders back and your chest out because you have done a very good job at something that is difficult for most and damned near impossible for some. Be proud man! You are an inspiration to me and I’m sure many others.

You’re doing all the right things so you know the plateau won’t last forever. Enjoy it while it’s here and don’t let a number get you down.

Thank you so much for that very nice post!

So, I had my weekly weigh-in and I lost 0.8 pounds since last week, bringing me down to an even 213.0.

And right after work, I had to take Shan in for his checkup and shots. He’s holding steady at 16 pounds.

Yay, Kat!

Just to add, tdn, that I haven’t been near your “plateau” figure in a good many years, and it’s several months of determined endeavour in front of me, assuming I don’t fold spinelessly long before then. Good for you!

Well, a week ago, I posted that I was somewhat shocked to still be under 200lbs because, with being so sick, many efforts have gone right out the window. The most exercise I get these days is emptying the ice trays so I can have a constant supply of ice for my constant need to drink! But I was still under 200lbs. Then I got my period! I didn’t weigh when it was at its worst (I never do), but decided to weigh this morning and see if any of last week’s weight might have been fluid related. Apparently it was, because I’m down almost 3lbs from last week! Amazing.

Couple of WL questions, I wonder if anyone knows the answer:

1: Popular opinion says it’s bad to cut calories too much because you go into “starvation mode”, with your body trying to hoard energy. Does anyone know exactly what this threshold may be, how long it takes to trigger, and whether appetite is a reliable indicator? Is staying “gosh I’m hungry” for, say, an hour before each meal enough to trigger this starvation hoarding

2: We hear a lot about “don’t look at the scale” because fat is more dense than muscle. But according to the cites I’m finding, the density of fat is 0.9 g/mL, while the density of muscle is 1.05. That is very little difference in terms of volume. So if I’m exchanging fat for muscle, my actual body volume isn’t going to change much at all, is it?

What I’m trying to determine is whether it’s worth it to do any resistance exercise at all. It seems to do nothing but boost my appetite and make me feel like I’m starving all the time.

Thanks.

The good news is I’m no longer losing weight on borrowed time. I’m back on track with stuff, and in a week or two, hopefully I’ll fall off of the plateau. In the meantime, I’ll enjoy what I’ve accomplished so far.

I’m not really sure, but I’d say if your BMI is way too high and you don’t look like Ahnold, then a scale will probably be a good indicator for you. If it jiggles rather than ripples, you want to see your weight going down. A scale is a personal decision – some of us get help from them, some of us don’t. If you’re at a healthy BMI, then a scale might be a nice guideline, but a mirror might be a better one.

What I’m trying to determine is whether it’s worth it to do any resistance exercise at all. It seems to do nothing but boost my appetite and make me feel like I’m starving all the time.

Strength training is always a good idea, IMO (IANAD, though), for many reasons, not all related to weight loss. For one thing, it increases muscle mass, which increases metabolism. It really shouldn’t increase hunger, but if it does for you, there might be a number of ways to deal with it. Indulge? Fill up on veggies? Suffer? Personally, I’d pick the second one, but I’ve done the other two plenty.

Despite really not watching my eating last week - or getting off my ass at all - I was down another pound at weigh-in. I guess this is from having been good the week before, and also maybe I’m seeing the effects of coming off of a medication known to cause weight gain.

I’m home this weekend, which means it’s even harder for me to eat well, since there’s much more food temptation. I’m going to do my best to do the best I can. When I get back to school, I think I’ll rejoin the gym, since self-dircted exercise hasn’t been working that well.

You all remain an inspiration, and it’s good to see you, Drain Bead.
