SDMB Weight Loss Club, September

Well, I ended up last Monday morning in the ER with kidney pain (again!) and have a stone which the doc believes is small enough for me to pass, and an infection. So I have pain meds and antibiotics. No pain right now, or at least not so much I need narcotics. But I’ve got a couple more days on the antibiotics. In the meantime, I have to strain my urine. I’m pretty sure that doesn’t count as a calorie burning exercise, though.

My weight’s holding steady, which is fine.

Last weekend, before all the pain and unpleasantness started, I got dressed up to go out to dinner with my hubby. I had to get dressed up because a particular skirt that a particular other Doper gave me finally fit, and I got the awesomest shoes in the universe to wear with it. So Saturday morning, we hit the local Goodwill in search of the Perfect Top to wear. I thought a white cashmere V-neck would be perfect, but thought the odds of my finding one in my size at the Goodwill were slim to none. Well, I didn’t find it. But I did find a white angora V-neck in my size! Score! So I made him take pictures that I could add to my picturetrail account, before we headed out the door. Then yesterday I tried to put up those pics, only to find that the files are too large. He has to fix that before I can add them. But believe me, I looked good.

Just checking in here. Sorry to hear that some of you aren’t feeling well. The humidity and allergies have been kicking my butt here too.

I did gain back two pounds last week. Not certain if it was because of my metabolism, change in exercise, or simply because I ate badly earlier in the week. It could be all of those factors actually.

Jayjay did much better though. He lost 6 lbs. Hopefully the trend will keep going. He has been trying so hard, and it has been difficult for him too.

Tomorrow is another day…:). I am bound and determined to keep going.

I started back at yoga for the first time since screwing up my ankle in - what, February?. I am hoping to be able to get two classes per week in. It’s difficult because each class is 90 minutes, plus 1/2 hour travel time each way, PLUS working and raising kids and keeping the house. I’m having a discussion in IM with a friend of mine right now about this very topic. He can do 10 hours of boxing/cardio/weights, but I just can’t. I simply do not have the time.

Don’t get down on yourself - you’ve been sticking with it for some time now and just seeing you go from “I may take a break” to “Back to yoga” in three days is cool. If I can offer some encouragement and free advice (which is worth what it costs, ha ha), don’t stress about sticking to a particular plan or hitting some numerical goal (whether it be pounds or points or time or anything else) - just make it a part of your daily routine that you eat a bit healthier than you used to and that you get some kind of exercise in; if your back hurts and 90 minutes of yoga isn’t in the cards so you take a walk around the block the point isn’t that you didn’t do yoga, it’s that you took a walk. I find that if I’m worried about some specific short-term measurable goal and I don’t achieve it, that stresses me out, as opposed to keeping my mind on the long-term outcome.

Years ago I participated in some professionally coached sessions for a sport that I was involved in. Something they did that really stuck with me is after each session they’d gather us around for a debrief/discussion which always went this way:

  1. What went well? You can always think of something positive if you phrase it this way. Don’t worry about “I didn’t do everything I set out to achieve”, just think of something good that you did do - like above, “I took a short walk” or “I skipped the Oreos and had a piece of fruit instead”, that kind of thing.

  2. What could be done better next time? Not “What went wrong” or “What did I screw up” - don’t get negative. Look at it as a learning experience, given what happened last time what small goals can I set for myself next time to improve even more over #1?

I found that this worked for me in WW as well.

If your friend can do 2 hours a day of kickboxing or whatever that’s nice for him, but he isn’t you. Like you said you are working, taking care of your family and so on. The situations aren’t comparable so he isn’t the appropriate measuring stick.

I saw my doctor on Friday and the first thing he asked me was if I’d lost weight. According to the doctor’s scale, I was “about 218” and last time I saw him (in June) I was at 243. He was very impressed and told me to keep it up. In addition, my BP was down to 120/70.

Friday night I went out for dinner and drinking again. I haven’t been particularly good or bad otherwise, but I’ve been completely unmotivated to exercise.

To be fair, I’ve been completely unmotivated to do ANYTHING. And I haven’t yet bought a pint of Ben and Jerry’s in which to drown my sorrow, so it could be worse.

Well, here I am on Monday with the same average weight as last Monday 173.07…so I guess it wasn’t a losing week for me.

I blame the midnight eating but it’s hard not to. I leave work on Thursday at 4:00. get home about 4:20 eat a very quick dinner and get ready for our regular Thursday gig. Arrive set up, perform from 7-11. Break down the gear, drive home and it’s after midnight and I haven’t had anything except water since 4:30 and I’m hungry dammit! So my husband and I usually have a snack before we go to bed. Maybe I just need to alter the content of my snack. I’ve been thinking about WW no points vegetable soup or herbal tea or something that’s a bit less food than a chicken sandwich.

The bad news (and good news from the midnight eating perspective) is that we got the axe from the owner of the restaurant so the Thursday gig is history. We still have a steady Friday and Saturday and the scenario is about the same. Maybe I need to bring food to the gig so I’m not ravenous when I get home.

tdn and Ginger I hope you both feel better soon. Ginger I’m not sure I’d be able to stick to the Yoga if it took me so long to get there. Is there nothing closer for you? What about a Yoga DVD or Video?

Thanks for your words of wisdom Valgard that’s something that would work in any situation.

You’ve been stuck in a rut for quite a while, it seems, and with little results. And you continue with the same habits that you’ve complained about for a long while. Maybe it’s time to do something radically different? Ramp up the exercise, perhaps? Or make good on your promise to tote along some healthy gig foods?

Sorry about your losing your Thursday gig.

And thanks for wishing me better health. My whole life is suffering a bit over it. :frowning:

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately (shush, it’s all we do here!) and I’d love to get opinions from you guys. What’s the lowest-cal drink?

At home I’ve been drinking gin and diet tonic (1 point per oz of gin, I think) or wine (2 points per serving (~5 oz)). Bars rarely have diet tonic, though, and I don’t like cola at all, diet or not. What do you guys drink?

Water.

Seriously.

Well, as far as alcohol goes, I normally have a glass or two of Chardonnay a day, because it’s lower carb than many other wines (my doc recommended I drink wine to get my “good cholesterol” a little higher; it’s pretty low right now). At a bar, I’ll drink vanilla vodka and diet Coke or rum and diet Coke (though the vodka is lower in carbs than the rum). Non-alcohol, I’ll drink diet iced tea, coffee with Splenda and cream (because of the kind of surgery I had, cream is actually good for me!), Crystal Light.

If I drink beer at all, I’ll drink the good stuff and take the hit on the calories. I can’t stand the “light” stuff!

I’m a wine gal, normally. I like beer, but I don’t like light beers at all. Beer fills me up really fast anyway, so I never have more than 1 or two at the most. I like hard liquors, but I don’t drink much of them. Too hard to stick to a reasonable serving size, plus I don’t like diet mixers. Which is weird, b/c I do like diet soda.

Wine is 10.5 points for a bottle. Not that I know anything about that.

Before I started this thing, I was drinking a ridiculous amount of soda, like a 6 pack a day. If it was beer I’d totally be an alcoholic. See, my work has 25 cent soda machines of EVIL. Now, I’ve switched mostly to Diet Pepsi, black tea, and a lot of water. Sometimes I’ll have a regular soda.

My weight’s down to 216.5, which is 8.5 lbs in a month. I didn’t do any exercise last week though, have to hit the gym again this week. Also I’m going to start doing my Kali class (Filipino martial art) again, I haven’t been for a couple years for various reasons.

I know what you mean. A few weeks ago I was in a restaurant, and I wasn’t planning on drinking, but they had a happy hour special on bottled beers, one dollar. The best thing they had was Coors Light. Hey, no calories in water, right?

Ha! That’s where they get you! It may taste like water, but still has nearly 100 calories a can! Blech.

So I’ve been at this for about a month. I’ve stopped eating TV dinners and begun avoiding the worst fast food, aside from maybe one burger once a week. Instead of chips and chocolate I’ve been noshing on fruit and veggies. I’ve been keeping my net calories consumed around 2000-2100, though I haven’t been keeping strict track. I’ve been hitting the gym religiously for at least 30 minutes every day, whether to lift weights or do cardio. About the only thing I really haven’t changed is drinking diet soda, which I’ve heard plenty of people claim inhibits weight loss despite the lack of calories.

You’d think after a month I’d start showing at least a little loss. Yet each time I’ve weighed myself, it’s wavered pretty steadily between 250 and 260 pounds. I do feel better physiologically now that I’m actually getting vitamins and such into my body, I would’ve hoped to see some loss. :frowning: I intend to keep after it full-bore, of course. It’d just be nice to see some verifiable change.

You might have to step it up a notch, but you might just need to be a bit more patient. It usually takes a while to kick start weight loss.

You mean sugar? I thought I tasted something in that water.

I’m figuring so. I’ve been pretty sedentary the last three years, so I imagine the metabolism is in the toilet.

As for stepping it up a notch, I would, but it’s not like I stop at 30 minutes because my show’s on. I stop around then because I can’t feel my limbs any more past that point.

You’re probably getting significantly fitter, but at 2000 calories a day or so, assuming an average activity level, weight loss will be extremely slow. If this diet/exercise is sustainable indefinitely for you though, go with it, the results will take a long time to show up, but once they do, they’ll stay.
