SDMB Weight Loss Club, September

I think 30 minutes is just fine, but yeah, cut back a little more on the big calorie items.

And I would bet that you are burning fat, but it’s intramuscular fat, not subcutaneous. When your muscles finally get lean, your rolls will follow.

A recommendation I was given at one point for my weight and activity level (255, desk job) was 2100 per day in order to lose two pounds per week, so I’ve been sticking to that. Admittedly it does sound a little off, but it’s still a reduction in the amount of food I’m eating each day. I think I’d just be miserable if I tried to drop to 1500 or so per day.

That sounds about right, you can always spot check using a calculator like this one: http://www.healthnetwork.com.au/weight-loss/daily-calorie-needs.asp

I’m also a big fan of tracking my progress with www.physicsdiet.com, which allows me to see how “off” I am in terms of daily caloric intake.

Do you look more buff than before? It’s possible you’re gaining muscle and losing fat at approximately the same rate. Also, muscle is denser than fat.

I think you’re probably right, fat’s being replaced with muscle. I don’t look much different, but that’s the most likely answer. I know my roommate’s getting annoyed with me flexing my muscles and going “Does this look different to you?”

Helen’s Eidolon: I drink water and tea (I gets me Tetley’s love), and a latte (skim) almost every day. If we’re having a party or going out, I usually will drink one or two drinks, be it a beer or two, or a margarita. If I’m going out, I don’t worry about the points too much because I’m really good throughout the week.

I do Bikram Yoga, so no. There are only a couple of places around here for it.

Radically different? Yes, that is exactly what I need. That and a swift kick in my ample behind.

Well, my husband is having a hard time kicking his acid reflux/heartburn problem and we both suspect that alcohol is large part of his problem. I’ve known for some time that alcohol is a large part of my problem so we’ve decided to take a break. From now until we go on vacation end of October we’re going to abstain.

Today on my lunch hour I’m heading to Target to pick up some items to ship to my kid in San Jose. I think while I’m there I’ll look into some weight training equipment. Hand weights or elastic bands (I could keep those here at work).

Full report to follow. I will see the 160s before vacation if I have to cut off my left leg to do it.

I suspect this might be a bad idea.

I dunno. I’ve heard hopping is very good exercise!

You can’t run on one leg, remember?

See, everytime I have a good idea you guys come along and rain on my parade. Spoil sports!

OK, fine. I won’t cut off my leg. Instead I did indeed purchase a set of resistance bands at Target. They’re right here on my desk. I decided to start out with the lightest resistance since I’ve never tried it before and have done 10 reps of each exercise in the booklet. It didn’t take long so I think I might hit that once more before I leave work. It’s all upper body work but that’s OK, I can do lunges and squats for lower body (not to mention all that walking)

If I can do that while I’m pretending to be the Maytag Repairman here at work at least I won’t be sitting on my butt reading the 'Dope all day.

Progress, not perfection.

I’ve remained pretty good this week, except for one thing - I broke down and bought a bag of peppermint patties (my love and weakness) at the grocery store on Sunday. The little bag, not the big one. I’ve been relatively good so far - only two a night (2 points), except last night when I had 4 in a moment of weakness. I think I’m going to be down at my weigh-in tomorrow, and I hope that gives me the motivation to stick to plan!

Also, I didn’t exercise AT ALL this week. I really need to next week.

I think that was a good move. Maybe your metabolism is just stuck, and you need a bit more muscle.

I accidentally typed “I think that was a goof move.” How one little typo can change the whole meaning of a sentence!

Woo hoo! I’m overweight! Psych!

As opposed to obese, that is. My BMI is under 30 and my weight is under 220. Finally!

A big pat on the back to you tdn you are an inspiration to me. I really admire your hard work (as well as many of your other fine qualities).

My husband and I have started taking a short walk in the evening after dinner. We did it last night for the first time. Sure beats sitting in front of the TV (where there’s never anything on I want to watch). He doesn’t have a weight problem but he is trying to get his cholesterol down. I think exercise is going to help him with that.

And today I weighed in at 170 which brought my average down to 172.1 which is fine by me. I’ve been really careful about how much I’m eating and trying not to overeat, especially at night.

Thank you, and good work.

I was just telling a coworker about you. She’s been losing weight, and she’s pretty much where she needs to be. She recommended that you google The Wendie Plan. I think we discussed it here before. Basically you mix high calorie days with low calorie days, to keep your body on its toes. The guess here is that your body has grown accustomed to your habits.

Woo hoo! I’d hug you, but I can’t find what’s left of you!

Keep looking! It will be so worth it!

For me anyway.

A coworker told me a little bit ago that the other day she told another coworker that it looked like I was fading away.

I know this post is older so you might have found a solution by now but there are pants out there for people with your shape. The eddie bauer fall catalog has pants in a style called blakely that are one size smaller in the waist than hips. You might be able to find them online too.

Excuse the hijack folks.

Do they have a counterpart fit for people who have larger waists and smaller hips/thighs? I need a larger waist size because of all the extra skin on my tummy area; but if I wear women’s jeans in the waist size I need (20), they are voluminous in the hips/thighs; for now, I’m just sticking with men’s jeans!
