I tried searching – I can’t believe I’m the only one having this problem…
Why can’t I see the arrows on the forum posts screen that let me open the thread and go directly to the new message? This happens on two Macs with Mac OS X 10.3.3, and Safari 1.2.1. Mozilla on the PeeCee seems to show the arrows properly. In all cases I have the theme set to “Straight Dope” – not the old v.3 style.
Any ideas?
For this, we need some reference from our SDMB folks that have the same software and hardware going on. Lemme ask . . . I’m PC mostly these days, and my Mac stuff is quite elderly, so I’m no help at all.

Mac OS X 10.3.3 and Safari 1.2.1 here. I see the “Go to first new post” arrows just fine. Don’t know what to tell you.
OS 10.2.8, Safari 1.0.2, no problems here.
Safari 1.0 - OSX 10.3, no problems here either.
Safari 1.2.1, Mac OS X 10.3.3 - no arrow problem here.
This seems to be as good a place to ask as any-
I’ve got OS 10.3.3 and Safari 1.2.1 as well. At least half the time, clicking on "view first unread post’ either dumps me at the end of the thread, rather than the place where I actually left off, or it repeatedly brings me back to the same point in the thread no matter how much further I’ve read on. I don’t log out of the SDMB at all between visits, because I don’t share this laptop with anyone. So why is Safari “forgetting” what I’ve viewed last?
OS 10.2.8 with Safari 1.0.2 here.
I also see the arrows when using the Straightdope theme. If I go to Safari>Preferences>Appearance and uncheck the “display images when the page opens” box, then refresh, the arrows will be gone.
OS X 10.2 & Safari 1.0…no arrow problem.
What has stopped working for me are the mouseover pop-ups though.
OS 10.3.3 and Safari 1.2.1, with no problems with the arrow or mouse over. I have noticed that the mouse over preview doesn’t seem to work with threads whose original post predates the implementation of that feature.

(my first post as a charter member, too!)
I do get the arrows after I’ve opened the post, just in case I’m confusing anyone. What I don’t get are the arrows on the main pages that list all of the post topics (the one with the popup descriptions). I like to open everything in tabs before reading anything, which works, but just no going directly to the post.
I tried what wakimika said, but I already have load images checked. When I uncheck it, the “new message” graphics all disappear (and locked and no new message indicators). When I load images, though, they all appear correctly. I see that there are new images, and the thread title is bolded properly.
Really, it’s just a minor hassle. And I’ve already gone and spent the $4.95.
Safari isn’t keeping track in the first place; the board is. The problem is that it’s supposed to show you everything new since your last visit, but it’s a little ambiguous what your last visit is, so the board has to make a few educated guesses. More often than not, these guesses are wrong. This is an issue with all browsers, not just Safari, and is independent of any settings you may have in your browser.
