Because the court ruled, he did not have “base motives” for the killing 
I can’t provide a link, as their headline story changes hourly, but 1010 WINS now has a banner photo of a smiling Armin and a plate of meatballs, with the headline, “Cannibal Gourmet—That’s Some Spicy Meatball.”

I know, as hard as it is to believe, that some people have the urge to have an arm or a leg cut off. Is there really a disorder (a chemical imbalance or whatever) that causes people to have the desire to be killed, butchered, filleted and eaten?

If I were to brutally rape a woman with the help of burning candles, chains, strings and whathaveyous I would go to jail for a very long time - and rightfully so. If, however, two consenting adults were to have a night of …bondage…sado…maso…chism (?) with the exact same er… activities they would not be committing a crime, they would just be “with it”.
IMHO the same rules apply, the “victim” had agreed to being served, so I really think 8 1/2 years in jail is a bit over the top.
…the rest of his life in an asylum would be more fitting. He has an eternity in Hell to look forward to, anyway.
