He’s led and converted late drives from behind against the 49ers, Ravens and Steelers already this season, and led late drives to sustain or expand tight leads as well.
I watched Favre’s whole career with Green Bay, and saw most of his games. and I still say he’s playing fundamentally differently than he ever has. He’s not trying to thread the needle anymore. He’s been willing to take the sack or throw it away.
It also helps that his defense keeps him in every game, that he’s got an elite running tandem, and that he’s got a number of receiving weapons around him, but as long as thse things don’t change, then the odds of Favre returning to “Bad Brett” form are going to be pretty low.
Sooner or later somebody is going to shut down Peterson and go ahead big, and Favre will implode. The question is simply whether it happens now or in the playoffs.
The playoffs are a higher level of competition. The fact that he has been ahead and well protected this season does not mean the playoffs wont be different. He still has the gunslinging mentality after doing it for about a century.
What are you guys going to say when he’s hoisting the Lombardi trophy? You know, he HAS won the Superbowl before. It’s not like he’s never gotten it done.
I don’t think it’s the defense or running game. The running game is solid, but not really any better than what he had with Ahman Green. The defense has put pressure on the offense as many times than not. Both GB games, Ravens, Steelers, 49er’s, all allowed easy scores by the opponent that put a lot of pressure on the offense to score.
I think the biggest difference is the receiving corp. Favre’s got a history of making a good #1 receiver look like an elite one. He’s also very good at checking down. Both Rice and Berrian are solid receivers that play well with Favre. Rice is turning into an elite receiver under Favre. For check downs, he has Shancoe (tied for 3rd in the league for TDs), and Percy Harvin. Oh yeah, and Peterson or Taylor from the backfield. He’s got more options than he’s ever had before. Harvin in particular plays well in the check down role. He seems to almost always be wide open for Favre, when Favre is getting into trouble. Favre hasn’t needed to force things, because he has always got yet *another *good receiver to check down too.
It’s pathetic how all you prescient haters are sitting on the edge of your seats waiting for Favre to have a bad game so you can whip out the pointless “I TOLD YA SO’s,” while your team either will likely miss the playoffs or has been handed 2 big L’s by Favre and crew.
My team has already missed the playoffs. The Buccaneers are mathematically eliminated from wild card consideration. However, we haven’t lost to the Vikings… and won’t because we don’t play you.
Anyway, it’s got nothing to do with prescience. It has everything to do with history. Favre has always thrown interceptions in crunch time. It’s not up to us to assume he won’t do that again - it’s up to him to prove he won’t.
Well, Peterson has been shutdown a number of times, such as 25 for 55 (2.2avg) for the first GB game, which was basically a blowout until garbage time.
Peterson was also shutdown in the Pittsburgh game. 18 for 69, 3.8 avg (That’s a ‘shutdown’ in Peterson terms, not Forte terms ) and Pittsburgh went up big. And Favre imploded by throwing 33 for 50, 334 yards. His one interception was a catchable ball that was tipped.
But all that aside, I don’t think you can call it an implosion if they are down big and throwing is the only option. Taking risks at that time is the SOP. If it’s a tight game, or they are up big, and Favre starts throwing picks, that’s an implosion. (See Cutler)
Only time will tell. I do know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Vikings were better with Favre this year than they would have been with their other choices. If he ends up tanking, oh well, it was nice while it lasted.
I am a Packers fan and not particularly happy with Favre now. But, ifrst of all, ALL QBs have bad games, so if he has a bad game, it won’t be shocking. Will the bad Brett show up and throw that untimely interception. Yes, possibly, but I don’t see it as a pre-ordained happening. The sad truth for this Packer fan is that the Vikings are a very complete tema which hlep rein in bad Brett very effectively and I honestly don’t see why it would suddenly make an appearance in the playoffs.
I still don’t think the Vikings win the Super Bowl (my money is on Indy this year), but they are a very good team and they are certainly on the short list to do so.
BTW, would it surprise folks to know that the Packers are higher ranked defensively than the Vikings. It is due to the Vikings poor ranking on Pass Defense which is of course due to the fact that the Vikings are ahead a lot. I must say though that Packers defense is looking pretty good this year.
The Packers have only been down big to the Vikings. They were down by 10 to Cincy, not sure if that qualifies as big. The loss to the Bucs was by 10 and it was close until Rodgers threw an interception with less than a minute left that was returned for a TD.
