…at least according to a study by a group called Mandoe Media, who rated it the best place in America to get a pizza based on four criteria; average review scores on online review sites, percentage of those ratings which were the top score, ratio of pizzerias to population, and the number of Google searches for pizza originating from the area.
This proclamation has come as quite a surprise to lots of people, not least of all Seattlites themselves, who have largely responded to this news by saying “no we’re not”. There is no distinctive Seattle-style pizza, and we have a few regional chains, but they’re nothing to write home about. There was a place that went viral a year or two ago because they would only produce a certain number of pizzas a day and their waiting list was weeks long, but now they’re a chain and it’s not as prestigious as once it was. Perhaps in some sort of abstract mathematical sense Seattle is the superior of New York or Chicago, but not in a tangible way that someone could point to based on the quality of the meal they’d be getting.
The top ten, for the record, rounds out as thus;
- Boston
- Portland
- New York
- San Diego
- Orlando
- Cleveland
- Denver
- Chicago
- Pittsburgh
I figured this would make a good jumping-off point for us to talk about what does make a good pizza city. Aside from the obvious places, are there any cities that have a pizza scene you’re particularly fond of?
