Anyone else? Laser Rocket Arms are hosting.
I’m in.
What has two opposable thumbs, 8 fingers, a computer, internet access and is going to trivia tonight?
This Guy
I’m a maybe – I’m fighting a cold and I’m booked solid the rest of the week, so I might need a night at home. We’ll see how it goes.
Myself and himself are planning on being there.
Who’s going to get the most right in the 80s music round we’ve been promised? Will that person feel proud or ashamed for knowing so much on the subject?
Unfortunately, when it comes to the 80s the “if you can remember it, you weren’t there” excuse doesn’t hold.
Do I need to bring my Hammer Pants?
Yes, I’m bumping a day early.
Tomorrow night, Naomi is hosting at the Old Pequliar. As I recall, after her debut week, Cervaise and at least one of his friends vowed never to attend another quiz she hosted.
Last week we discussed checking out the George & Dragon again – after all, it’s been a few years at this point.
Anyone else up for a change in venue tomorrow night?
(The week after that, I’m hosting. Any discussion of change-of-venue for that should be done politely out of my earshot.)
<darth vader> No-o-o-o-o! </dv>
G&D would be great.
Psych.
George & Dragon sounds good to me. I’ve missed their steak sandwiches, though it will be hard to adjust to a 40-question quiz. Those long pauses between questions can be annoying.
My brother and I will be arriving fairly late, so I hope someone is getting there while there’s still tables to be had. Maybe it’ll be nice enough for deck-sitting!
After moving and starting a new job, I think I might be able to make it. What time does it all start at George & the Dragon?
P.S. Why was the quiz so poor last week?
I’ll be there, but also arriving fairly late – probably about 8, just in time for the start of the quiz.
I’ll be there, but probably not before 7:30 (the quiz starts at 8, right? It’s been so long!).
Yeah, the G&D starts at 8:00. It’s also (last we were there, at least) a six-person team.
I’ll see if I can get there earlyish, but earlyish for me is going to be 7:00.
I will not be there. I need to make my skin more pasty before I go to Miami.
Why was the quiz subpar last week? Two words: Audio Round.
Actually, the quiz itself was fine. The questions were hard to hear and they rocketed through them in the initial rounds, which can be frustrating. So, as Lemony Snicket would say, it was a series of unfortunate events.
True dat.
However, if you’re wondering why Naomi was a bad host, she was several weeks ago. I didn’t dislike her, so you’d have to ask Cervaise what made her unrepeatable.
I hate “guessing” trivia.
I don’t care if we don’t know the answer. But there has to be at least a nonzero chance that some applied consideration will get the team within spitting distance of it.
Example of good question: “What’s bigger, the Sahara desert, Australia, the Roman Empire at its peak, or the drainage basin of the Amazon River?” While I don’t know what the answer is (and we got it wrong when it came up), we can take a shot at reasoning it out. Better yet, the answer is interesting.
Naomi’s questions were not of this type. They were random, disconnected, and frustrating. I don’t remember any of them specifically, but I do remember thinking I wouldn’t be all that surprised if she asked us what her grantparents’ phone number was when she was in high school. They weren’t that bad, but they were close.
“You know it or you don’t” trivia is not fun, unless the subject is intensely fascinating. “Who ruled England between Charles II and William III” is a bad trivia question. You either know it, or you’re picking a name and number out of thin air and hoping for the best. By contrast, “Of the first ten English monarchs, how many were murdered” is a good trivia question, because even if you know (I don’t), it’s interesting to think about it. Too many of Naomi’s questions were of the first type.
At least, that’s just my impression of how it went, several weeks later.
King James of the bible fame, I believe, though Charilliams the II.V is also acceptable.
So that question would be a rather clever one in a round titled “The Bible.” It’s all about context.
