It’s also the way Republicans (generalizing here) accept gays: do what you like in the gay community, but don’t try to incorporate it into your public life. Keep it separate.

My point is that the death certificate was issued before the autopsy was done, and “heart attack” is kinda the default for “died quickly of natural causes that aren’t obviously something else”. So the news is saying “heart attack or stroke” because that’s the other common thing that people think of. The “short illness” is really more accurate, we know whatever killed him came on suddenly and killed him fairly quickly.

Yes, exactly. He’s been horrible in many ways that have already been mentioned here, but he’s one of few R’s who kept the faith on NATO and Ukraine.
Not that this is the most important thing in the world, or that it necessarily outweighs all the bad he did. But so few R’s have done anything at all as far as recognizing and supporting our true international allies, Graham was a standout by meeting the minimal acceptable bar in this particular area. In fact I can think of few R’s, or even D’s at this point, who give as much of a shit about Ukraine as they ought.
So right now there are 51 Republicans in the Senate (53 minus Graham and McConnell) versus 47 Dems (45 plus two independents who caucus with them).
With Murkowski, Collins, Paul, and now Cassidy at least occasionally off the reservation, that could make things dicey in the senate for a little while for the GOP.
How soon will the the governor of South Carolina appoint Graham’s replacement?
Apparently as soon as he chooses. It would be an end-the-term appointment since Graham was up for re-election in November. The state GOP will hold a special primary to replace him on the ballot.
It’s unclear when a replacement will be named, sayeth the news, but Trump has already said he has a preferred name. Hard to imagine anything that says more about the subservience of the state parties to Trump than that if it comes true.
Here’s one “fact” about Graham’s sexual identity. Laura Loomer, under oath in a deposition, said she accurately called Graham gay on X because people in the Trump administration had told her he was. tbf, she also said a truckload of other stuff that makes one wonder about her sanity.
I don’t know that it’s fair to call him gay, because that’s an identity label that he rejected, whatever his actual orientation was. He’s a man who had sex with men (MSM). There are a lot of people who identify as straight who do that between just one time and very often, for many different reasons.
I do think that the hypocrisy necessary to be closeted is the same hypocrisy that allowed him to support Trump, and I’d love to know whether feeling he needed to be closeted led to his mastery of hypocrisy, or whether he was always hypocritical and that just made it easier to live life in the closet.

Well, Fetterman has announced that he’s doing a joint fundraiser with a PA Republican. So I think that change has finally become official.
What’s funny is that she made the statement unprompted.

Now, it bears repeating that this is Laura Loomer. The whole deposition (warning: pdf) is combative and pretty wild. So you can take everything she says with some skepticism (she’s also reported that McConnell is already known to be brain dead.

And for those wondering why she was being asked this, or what the lawsuit was about: There was a point during the campaign when Loomer was seen palling around with Trump, and comedian Bill Maher said that it was because they were having an affair. She sued Maher for defamation, and part of his lawyer’s defense was that Loomer also commented on the sex lives of notable people (the Graham stuff came right after the lawyer asked about a reference to Marjorie Taylor Greene having - forgive me - Arby’s in her pants. If you are scratching your head on that one, Arby’s sells roast beef, and Loomer was comparing Greene’s genitalia to one of their sandwiches
